Remember your dad's big ass Stanley thermos that he got when he was much younger (before you were born) and he'd still take it to work every day in winter, as well as on road trips. It looked like crap, but always kept the coffee steaming hot even after 10-12 hours. Had that gnarly hammered green finish.

Well, I was in the market for one like that because buying coffee is expensive and a waste of money, but I like it at work. So I just went to the store and bought one. Not much had changed from the looks of things when I bought it. Cost me around $30, which I thought fair, especially since it said "Built for Life" real big on the label and I remember they would replace your thermos if it failed.

Well, first day of use the thing failed in epic fashion. I opened it after 3 hours (I make coffee, go to gym then eat breakfast before drinking coffee) and it wasn't even steaming. Warm, but not hot. WTF? Flipped it over and yeah, you guessed it "Made in China" stamped right on the bottom. These things have been made in Nashville since I can remember, and I never heard about them leaving. Apparently since 2002, theyve been made overseas.
I looked around online at reviews, and they're mostly terrible since that time, of course. I emailed the company, they said take it back to the store so I did and got a refund, not an exchange. On the stanley website there are all these reviews like, "Ive had mine since 1927 and it still kicks ass"... well yeah, they used to.

So I took the money I got back and I went on Ebay and found some from when they were still made in the US and bought one (1997 model). I got one cheap on account of it missing a handle, but the ones in decent shape are beginning to climb in price, many listed for $50ish right now, and in the future as decent ones become more rare, they'll cost more. Id recommend buying now.

Ive started these types of threads before, but it's just sad, not to mention a pain in the ass. When will I learn? Dont buy cheap chinese crap painted to look like something quality.

Yup - but BS does have a point. Cheap Chinese crap will likely disappoint. Well made Chinese stuff will likely meet expectations.

Some Chinese items on the space station.I took these while viewing the space station assembly room at the Kennedy Space Station tour.

God you guys are old.

My dad still has 2 from before I was born, he bought a 3rd when I was about 7yrs old. We got out of the truck at our farm and he says "you know this thing is indestructible" To which I replied "nothing is indestructible dad", so he takes it and throws it on the ground really hard, and the cap broke in a million pieces and the handle halfway broke off. I had never seen my dad so sad in my life.

I hear ya Burly.
I had to buy truck tires today, because I was riding around on Maypops.
Anyway, my new tires say Pegasus on the side.
I just know there were made in the dead center of China more than likely by their Government. I am nervous.

The weights to balance them are probably made of lead.

Did you fill it with hot water to pre-warm the thermos up before adding your coffee?
If not, it won't keep a drink hot.

My USA made and chinese made both worked similarly.
The chinese one was lost in a 'fishing rage' incident when I hurled it against a sailboat that had just cut our trolling lines.

I did, and I also tried it again before I took it back and the bottle itself was warm to the touch when filled (ie. losing heat). Mentioned this story to two guys at work.. one guy had a brother who had one that didnt work. The other guy had one that worked just fine... so Im assuming its a QC thing. Im sure plenty work well enough, but I hate it when Im on the losing end of some company's quality gamble so they can satisfy a few shareholders and I have to run all over town exchanging sh*t. So, I just bought an old one.

Consumers want more cheap crap and the market gives it to them. The typical consumer who wants something of higher quality usually just wants the same cheap crap with some ****ty designer logo on it.

****-Yeah!

I have no idea where I am
I use a crock pot in the studio as a pickle pot ( acidic bath that removes firescale and flux after soldering ). The new ones, made in China of course, are so poorly made that after just a few weeks of use the glazing on the ceramic insert starts to crack and leak. So now I have to keep checking thrift stores for the old ones. Basically a used 20 year old crock pot will out last a brand new one.

nope.

DH bike: Montreal, Canada (XPREZO)
BMX: SoCal (S&M)
XC hardtail: Colorado (Yeti hardtail)
Road Bike: Bradford, PA (c'dale)
Slalom Bike: maybe. Can't recall if Cheeta made their stuff in the US, i think they did

I have a spesh SX circa 2005 that was overseas, but I got a killer deal on it.

Only one I'm unsure of is my Zoo! pitbull

the real deal is hard to find now...I'm trying to make more of an effort to buy american BUILT products, and if not (like computers), at least support american companies, like even (ugh) apple.

Leave the cheap, poorly made crap where it belongs.

This reminds me of a book I recently read titled "Poorly Made in China". A good read, especially for those interested in how the industry works in China. It's describes how the industry works over there through a bunch of first-hand experiences the author has had.

After reading that, I would rather become a dirty hippie than use dollar store shampoo/etc (not that I really went for the dollar store products in the first place...).

Even well-known brands that are made over there scare me now.

Pretty sure my old man still has 3-4 of those green Stanley ones still. Even has the matching cooler that they snap onto the lid.

If you guys quit buying cheap chinese junk, they aren't going to have the money to buy US debt. US debt is the only thing we still manufacture and sell. You guys are all job killers! Why do you hate freedom®?

I have one with the box and it has been up and down the coast many times and never went cold or leaked a drop. The chinese could manufacture it just as nice if the greedy pricks at Aladdin would let them.

I'd feel safer with my kids on a slick pair of BF Goodrich than a pair of "mythical winged Asian horse" treads. But only b/c the sidewalls on my BFGoodrich TA KO's have more metal in them than my frame rails.:D

Ironic purchase considering Michelin HQ is in your back yard. Don't you know a guy who knows "the" guy?;)

When they started making them in China, the manufacturer passed the savings along to the consumer, right? I imagine the price went down substantially. A company would never do something like make them in China for cheap and keep the price the same, the market would punish them for behavior like that.

Amirite?
