Christchurch has had another earthquake, this time there has been serious loss of life. Death toll tallied at 65 so far with many more expected.

Quake was 6.3 magnitude, depth 5km and about 10km from city centre.

Quake struck at 12.51pm local time during local lunch time on CBD.

Iconic buildings have been destroyed.

Engineers were apparently in the spire of this central city church establishing damage from the the September quake.

This quake has come less than 6 months after the 7 magnitude quake which resulted in one death via coronary and was one of the largest insured events ever estimated at USD4bn

The city was just starting to rebuild.

Horrifying
''It was a guy who had been working on the top floor and it had collapsed and he had fallen right to the bottom. All this stuff had collapsed on top of him, a lot of the building. He had chest injuries and a broken pelvis and big gashes on his arms.

''He was screaming the whole time we were carrying him out.''

They carried the man out of the shop on to a bench seat. Mr Brittenden put pressure on the man's chest with his head in his lap.

''His whole chest had collapsed and I had to keep pressure on his chest because all his ribs were broken,'' he said.

I can't imagine anything I'd less like to go through than a big quake.

Not to make light of a seriously terrible situation such as this, but given the name of the city, a "Where is your God now?" picture would be eerily ironic.

That said, I hope you Kiwi monkeys are safe, as well as all family and friends.

I hope you get cancer and die.

That said, thanks for your heartfelt comments of support. Dick.

Please don't take that the wrong way...that wasn't/isn't my sentiment about the situation at all. I feel terrible for the people there and wish the best for them, especially any and all fellow RM users that may be there and their friends/family. The statement was a mere observation given the name of the city, the terrible tragedy that occurred, and the trend of tasteless/ironic humor on the internet these days.

My sincerest apologies if it hurt or offended you.

dm - what's the deal with eqc? I heard them saying this morning that the re-insurance will cover the costs ok... but that they don't cover business premises or infrastructure...

if the Sept event was 4bn... this one's got to be a multiple of that...

EQC is residential property only - house / contents. They buy reinsurance like any private insurance co but will likely be cleaned out of cash reserves.

All commercial property and infracture is either 100% private insurers or self insured via government programs - they too lcarry varying degrees of reinsurance.

Loss estimates vary - NZD10bn to USD12bn. I suspect it will on the high side when you count non direct costs such as econmomic loss and everything that has been spent so far on the September quake which was lost or will have to be redone like engineers.

My friends were at the airport leaving town. Quake hit as they were checking in their bags. I think the building they were staying in only an hour before was leveled.

My thoughts and prayers to all those affected. Seriously. Quakes are fvcking terrible things, it really messes up your sense of reality for a long time afterward.

My friend Amy is still missing. I was hoping her Mom lets me know she is OK soon. I can't seem to find anything out right now.

I visited CHCH last December. It is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been or will be. My heart breaks for the city and its people. All the friends I have there have checked in and are okay. Though most are now considered refugees and have moved a couple hours out of town.

Anything is possible, but this is unlikely. Certainly the face of ChCh will be changed for ever, and there are some very serious near-term issues that need to be dealt with... but people are surprisingly resiliant, and remember these are New Zealanders we're talking about :P

Case in point;

...

The flamboyant Awang, who is known for his trademark wheelie as he crosses the line, was on the final bend of the race when he was involved in the crash with Poland’s Kamil Kuczynski, Edward Dawkins of New Zealand and Juan Peralta Gascon of Spain.

He's not the only one with a hardy attitude towards physical injury - following the crash in which Aziz Awang was hurt, fellow cyclist Edward Dawkins was approached by a medic and asked: ‘Where do you hurt?’

He replied: ‘I’m from New Zealand.’ When the question was repeated, he said: ‘I heard you, mate. I’m from New Zealand. We don’t feel pain.’

Just so you all know, Im fine, as is PTW.:thumb:
And Im lucky I guess that I dont personally know anyone who has lost their life.

My house has a bit of cracked brickwork, a door that wont close, and no water or sewer. Its still livable though, and we didnt lose much in the house, just the fridge-freezer contents (including some beer!! Noooooooo!!) and a few wineglasses.

My partners car got flooded and it a write off, which sucks balls cos it took us ages to find it, and will struggle to get another one the same.:(

My parents house was about 2k from the epicenter, and is totalled inside, everything is on the floor, even bookcases that were screwed to the walls. They are both ok, Dad got a whack on the head from some falling stuff which needed 6 stiches, he's all sorted now though.
They've gone down to my Aunt and Uncle's place in Wanaka to get away from it all, and to where there is power and water etc.

The pictures in the media dont show anything like the total mess here.
And its quite weird driving across town to work, home has silt everywhere, damaged roads and houses, shopping malls 3/4 destroyed etc, while over here on the other side of town you'd hardly know anything has happened.
