Looks a little too round to grip as well as minion when layed over. At least it looks like someone put some thought into it vs. 90% of other tread designs that look like they came from the hallucinations of some tire 'designer's' auto erotic asphyxiation adventures.

You know who makes the Canfield tires, dontcha?
Yep maxxis and the canfield tire is a 40d as well as it was designed by Lance and Chris. Sucks to design a pattern and have it mimicked by the manufacturer... Hmmm pacific and banshee seems others are flattering them with likeness...

Real close same style lug layout or damn close to it...

good on maxxis.

Maybe they realised a majority of the world cup pros prefer schwalbe so they needed to update their 10 year old tire...even though they were really good. But you need to innovate or else somebody else will.

It looks like the side knobs have been slightly reinforced for less flex which is a good thing.

I'm not sure if you're referring to gee atherton, sam hill, steve peat, sam blenkinsop, and leov, neethling, smith, beer (I think?), but none of them run schwalbe. I think gwin/yeti were the only guys running schwalbe. Hill was on specialized, gee on conti (and using maxxis the whole time), peat, minnaar, blenkinsop, leov, needles, smith, beer were all on maxxis, and I bet the field gets more skewed the further down the list you go.

After ten years with the same tire, maxxis is STILL the industry leader by far. You'd think companies like schwalbe would have figured out how to copy their tire by now. Specialized has, and it only took them about...I donno, a year or two of trying to come out with good tires.

Stevie ran a mix of schwalbe and maxxis, and it's up in the air what he will run this year I believe.

As long as the other manufacturers don't offer a proper DH UST tire it is Maxxis for me. Hope they bring a UST version of this tire. They didn't do it with the Ardent. :(

You mean that thin, thinner, thinnest sidewall Maxxis UST 'Downhill' tires.
Michelins are all tubeless ready, and are 'real' DH tires.
Have a set of C16, sorry, Wildgrip'r Descent 2.5 here. Heavy rubbers at 1380 gramme (whatever that is in imperial measurement).

But the new Maxxis Tire looks really promising. :thumb:

If you must know, it's because one of Maxxis' main design/testing guys went to Specialized. Pretty simple really.
It wasn't colin bailey so who cares :D

Still to this day, no one has duplicated the blocked off profile of the minion side knobs that point more towards the centerline than the sidewall of the tire. You get on that channel much sooner than any other design out there and the channel is big enough that you're using it for a huge range of cornering angles. THAT is why minions work so well and tire designers are too stupid to figure it out and they get caught in this stupid little game of making funny centerknob shapes that don't do shlt other than interfere with the function of the sideknobs. Either CB got lucky or really did understand what he was doing and thank god for that. The title of tire designer must be the certificate you earn in consolation for flunking out of beautician school at phoenix university.

Right, as if Canfield came up with the original idea to knock off the Mich Comp 16 first . . . looks like Maxxis added sipes to their Highroller. Not exactly a feet of mental gymnastics.

Not after you realize the majority of WC teams had their sponsorship/support dropped completely by Maxxis at the start of '09 and had no choice but to pay up or look elsewhere.

To the contrary, most WC pros love the Sharpie. Maybe that's what the new tire should be called . . .

Your right and as far as tread it does look alot like the derkaiser as well..seems to be the direction for.the moment with tread.

My bad it was just a bit of "what" when the pattern was right there and suddenly someone was coining it the inbetween tire which is what they were doing a while ago before their prototype or production. chris has been wanting to do this for a couple of years now and talking about it ... that's all.

Still say it looks like a good tire...

I remember back in the day, one of the guys at Onza was quoted as saying "making a good tire is almost impossible, making a great tire is blind luck".

Still true?

Unfortunately it's true, but only in the context of the current industry. It's just because most people doing the designs have like 93 extra chromosomes. It ain't rocket surgery........or in their case as complex as tying their own shoes which I bet is a daily struggle as well.

We have companies making braking edges that don't cup and hold but instead pierce and squirm. We have guys making decent looking sideknobs but then throw this bullshlt called 'intermediate' knobs in the way of them. We have people putting sipes on knobs that point the opposite direction a tire is turned when leaned over. There was a WTB guy on one of the interbike vids from a year or two ago explaining that they willingly put the sideknobs on one of their tires on backwards to 'open' up the channel. Sure it's open but now your tire slides like a bltch when you try to turn........They're literally just throwing crap around and just waiting to see what sticks. Like it's random chance they have to win the lottery for.

So oh yeah, it's definitely true........but it shouldn't be.

edit: Sorry for all the ranting. Sore subject :D

Maxxis Sharpie. I'd buy that hahaha.

Gotta love the "looks like" comments. Practically every tyre seems to evolve towards a similar pattern for the all round DH user. Sure there are condition specific tyres that look wildly different but for the most part there's not that many ways to skin a cat.

They all ripped off the Tioga Psycho II imo.

I don't see how it looks all that different from the current high roller.

slightly different side knob shape, more siping. A little similar to the minion, but still without the part of the every other corner knob that comes in.

actually, it looks just as though the one type of center blocks have been flipped, so the ramp edge goes from narrow to wide now instead of wide to narrow, while the other center blocks have a new deep sipe. I think they look pretty good.

They should definitely name it the Maxxis Sharpie, hopefully whoever owns the Sharpie trademark isn't a b!tch about using the name.

It makes you wonder how good those Conti's are when Gee won't even run them, and they sponsor him.

Nope. Wayne Parsons has tire design locked down. He knocked that new Maxxis tire up in 15 minutes!

You've got higher knob height in the center than the HR, and a more open spacing than the DHF. So you're looking at more of an intermediate tire for softer conditions. HR and DHF will still be the choice for hard and dry conditions, or when you need a faster rolling tire.

It's a nice evolution to something that is a bit more versatile.
