Clavicula makes one that in their opinion is DH ready but paying 500 euro for a crank is ridiculous.

Isn't it 1000 Euros for a full set + BB? So yeah, 500 per crankarm. ;)
There are pics of some pretty beaten up Claviculas floating around that are still going strong. I think they were on an Alutech team bike.

I believe that truvativ has some being prototyped right now. A carbon version of the descendant.

I was pretty against carbon for a while but it seems the way of the future. Would love to try a Carbon v10

what happens if rock chop bit by bit on carbon crank? carbon with scratches might be not good. My saint cranks are full of big dents on the ends :D The same reason I dont want carbon bar if im bad rider i.e. crashing often and getting scratches on this.

Easton carbon bars disprove your theory. Though I still have to see before I belive in carbon cranks.

OK heres the deal to all of the idiots who think carbon explodes once it has been exposed to any type of abrasion. (tomasis, I am not calling you an idiot)

I work in the prosthetic industry and a majority of the products are made of carbon fiber. Recently you may have heard of a South African sprinter who was banned from the Olympics because he runs on carbon fiber feet. Guess what, I gurantee those things are all mared up and covered in gauges and scratches, as is every other foot that we see here that has been exposed to typical normal use.

I ride with a prosthetic leg myself. It is probably 70% carbon fiber. I had a lower segment that is probably 15 years old. It is beat to sh1t from various crashes etc. I'm not a Redbull Rampage guy by any means, but I ride at a solid semi-pro/ cat 1 ability level hitting 15' drops, 30' gaps etc. and at no time have I been worried about the carbon side of things failing.

CARBON FIBER IS FINE. Can it break? Yes, but so can anything else. Does it bend first before breaking like aluminum? No, it DELAMINATES which indicates-yep it may break soon.

I would rock those easton carbon wheels in a heartbeat if they were not 2K.
Hell, I'ld rock the leg, the wheels, cranks and the V10 and call myself "Captain Carbon"
if it were not for the price tag...considering the leg is about 20K it would be a spendy proposition:D

And you wonder why I assume you are an anti carbon troll? 1st - pic taken out of context is really a good proof. 2nd - is that their dh bar or one of their new bars?
Never ass|u|me.

You get me so wrong. Again. How many times do I have to explain myself to you, you numpty?

That picture was just to wind you up... Looks like it worked ;)

I'm far from an anti carbon troll. I'm probably more pro carbon that most other DHers, after all I deliberately became a composite material research and development engineer, at the sharpest end of the technology, in order to scuplt my path into designing carbon DH bicycles and parts! It's just that in all my postgraduate study and professional resarch and testing into the design, behavior and failure of carbon composites, even at times specializing in tubular structures, I sternly advise against carbon handlebars for DH. I still wouldn't use them for any other form of riding, except maybe a track bike...

Carbon is the future IMO. Just not for DH handlebars. Ok? Have you got that now? Or do I need to draw you a picture?

I'm sure carbon cranks will be fine, if done right.

That is all.

Thank you.

Read your Pm. Im happy you want to derail this thread but I think it would be better if we did it by pms.

To any German users - Ive heard one of your mags did a review. Is that true? What was the verdict?

I wish you could've seen the carbon DH stuff we were just beginning to work on. Think: 300g(!) lighter than Saint with equal or greater strength, modular design, etc.

Besides the 50+ jobs lost when RF went tits-up, the fact that these never got produced is one of the biggest travesties of the whole debacle. From a personal/"I love cool DH sh!t" point of view and for the sake of the industry, I hope our main carbon engineer, Jon Staples, gets snapped up quickly by a co that can make these reality.

I've been beating the hell out of my 175mm FSA Carbon K-Force light cranks for 3-4 years now. The bottoms of the pedal bosses are certainly bashed to **** and missing some small bits of carbon at the ends but the seem to be quite sound elsewhere.
I'll grab a few pictures tomorrow so you can see what rocks make 175mm carbon xc cranks look like.

thanks for the pic. As far I can see that the ends of cranks have some thick cover around, then I'd be worried less if I used them. That proves that carbon is sensitive for physical abuse. If cranks have quite thickness so it might take some deep scratches/dents before it loses strength.

Im glad you didnt mention bars ;)

Im much more carbon pro than some think. I'd run anything on bike but bars. Because I imagine crash scenarios, broken bars that I least want. if I break cranks, I might take abuse of my nuts a bit :D

Re delemination, it is good point.

One point I take up that is crucial for mental comfort. If I know that I have the bars with scratches, then I couldnt concentrate on riding.

That strenght of Carbon in good condition I never questioned in any of my posts ;)

I dont mind abuse carbon so long it doesnt happen any terrible accident afterward.

Just rumors as far as I know.

I think it's very likely that the Race Face brand will be snapped up by someone months or more down the road, but I'd be really surprised if RF made any sort of real 'comeback' (think: Iron Horse). Most of the IP walked out the door with the employees who will likely wind up with other companies.

Hopefully they wind up with some of the local Metro Vancouver companies. I was looking at my cranks last night (I'm thinking of going 1x9 for my trail bike - possibly the E13 crank) and noticed that my bashguard, middle and granny were made by three separate Metro Van companies: Straitline, RF, and Envy. Hopefully Straitline or Envy can benefit from the IP (and the heads they are contained in) that was "liberated" by RF...

Wished i head 750 euro they would be strong enought to handle my weight for DH riding, realy sweet looking carbon cranks:thumb:.
If you think like one rich kid I know - you are not spending a 750 euro but saving 250 and saving is basicly earning so you should buy as much as possible and you are rich ;)
Though I have to say I've seen them live and they look really cool.
