I just read...err..attempted to read, the USAC rules to try and figure out how noah and i would qualify to race nationals...and it didn't go very well. those rules read like an drunk engineer wrote them.

so anyway...i am CAT2 30-39 and noah's racing age is 11 (i didn't see any CAT's for that young).

if i read it correctly, all i have to do to qualify for cat2 is to buy an annual license..is this correct? can i still qualify, with a top 10 finish at massanutten, if i don't have an annual license?
what about noah? does he have to qualify or does the 11-12 age group not count?

i'm all confused now....so if anyone is familiar with the process and can help me sort this out i'd be most appreciative.

You can't qualify on a Day Pass Lic. You have to have Annual Lic. Why don't you guys race the up and coming TN race? It is a State Champs race and will qualify you if you do well.

Good luck to both of you,
Cecil

so i have to buy a license regardless? screw that. buying 2 licenses for 2 or 3 races per year is a scam. i'd much rather put that money towards a weekend of riding at snowshoe or something. hanging out with all you guys at the races is about the only reason i race anyway. :D
i'd love to go to ETSU but budget and gas prices are keeping me local this year. they don't call us "po-po" for nothing ;)

And you don't get USAC points for Massanutten. I've told George people will not read a RM thread that it has changed and will be livid when they realize it, but he's set.

Maybe some emails to Massanutten would change his mind?

How many USAC points do you need to be able to particpate at Beech in September? Is it possible to qualify just by racing ETSU......or do you need to race in several USAC races?

I might be wrong but I believe if you place top 10 in any USAC event (such as ETSU) you qualify. They don't make it terribly difficult seeing as they want as many people at nationals as possible.

Hey manimal I went to nationals last year with my son. I didn't plan on racing, just spectating and riding. I had placed 4th or 5th in the slow old man class at massanutten that year on a day license. After being at Sol Vista for a few days I decided to look into whether or not I could race. The people at registration looked up my result and told me as long as I purchased an annual license and payed a late registration fee I could race. In the end I decided to just ride the open trails and watch. Unless things have changed it seems like you could qualify at ETSU on a day license and make the decision later about whether or not to buy an annual license. Hope that helps.

I currently have a USAC license, but only for collegiate racing. Do I need to purchase a CAT 2 license before I can petition for an upgrade to CAT 1? I've never had a license before, but I think my race results over the past couple years should merit a CAT 1 license.

While looking on the USAC website, it said I need to contact a regional representative for upgrades, but provided no contact to such a person. Anybody know the process better than I?

The local rep for the Carolina's is Stuart Lamp (slamp@usacycling.org). Just type up a list of your race results and he can do the upgrade. I can't remember is the Collegiate license includes a mountain one, but I think mine did a couple of years ago. It should say what you have on your license itself.

I would be going to Massanutten for sure if it was a qualifier. I might go to Windrock just to ride instead.

Your collegiate license expired December 31 unless you have already renewed it. They are separate licenses but I'm pretty sure there is a little discount if you get both.
