Michelin DH tires + DT Swiss rims = ffffffffffffffffffffffvck!!!

I've broken many plastic levers on that combo. Had to buy myself those big metal guys.

yea dude I feel your pain. I've deal with some uncooperative rim tire combinations in the past. I've found a little dab of dish soap on the bead can sometimes assist.

I SH*T YOU NOT!!! :secret: KY Jelly and WATER!!!:rockout:

After two hours I broke three brand new Sette tire levers from Pricepoint,
one Pedros and was about to grab the new park tools levers, mind you,
using soapy water that kept getting dry fast and sticky, when I finally got
tired of cussing my ass off in the back yard, as I'm sure did my baptist
neighbors, when I got to thinking, what would be a good lubricant like grease
but wouldn't be messy and would be easy clean up with something like water?

:lighten: KY!!! And it FREAKIN WORKS!!!

I drove up to Walmart and the rest was history! A little KY around the bead,
and along the rim, then put some water in a rag and squeeze the water from
it around the rim and bead. I was able to install 90% of the tire on the rim
without levers by hand and the last few inches with my last Sette lever
pulling the lever towards me and the bead slipped right over the rim like
a greased banana!!

If I had known I could have put my tires on that quick, I could have put them
on in ten minutes!! I couldn't believe I spent two hours breaking off brand new
levers and they went on THAT fast and THAT easy!

I put more water on a rag and squeezed it around the bead to really make it
slippery just before I put air in and the tire just popped right up on the rim
and seated almost perfect without much messing around with it. And I have
2 Ply 60a 2.50 Maxxis Minion tires on 33mm Sun MTX rims.

TRUST me on this! As funny as it sounds, it REALLY WORKS!! You can thank
me later. :thank:

Okay, this just in. Needed to take my tire off the other day and tried my KY idea and water and again it worked great! I got two levers in, pulled the bead out carefully, then pushed down on the tire pretty hard and got it to slip right off the rim without any more usage of the tire levers. I'm so no longer worried about putting on wire beaded tires anymore thanks to this new idea. And I didn't even by the KY brand. I bought the el cheapo walmart Equate brand to save me some dough! :brows:

I don't need no stinkin' levers (or lube) to get tires off the rim.

That method works awesome! Just put on 2 Minion DHF dual plays with no tire levers at all, or KY for that matter.

Spank Tweet tweet (or any OHBAH rim) is next to verifiably impossible the inner wall of the rim is curved up so you cant push the tire to the middle. and to make the situation even worse you cant use metal levers because the finish sucks. I can do almost any rim/tire I did a 729 with a WTB dissent the other day barehand but the spanks I dread.

I agree with Samnation as well. My rims do not have that deep canyon those rims he has in the video.

No offense infamous but that vid is misleading. First, both tires he has are XC tires, not DH's. He never mentions their wired beaded, only that the rim has a bead/lip for UST's. You can see easily the tread pattern is a small nobbed XC. If you got true Minion DH tires on without anything including no levers, you must have had better luck than me or different rims and tires. I was able to remove my buddies foldables without anything either just like the vid, and he had Kenda wired beaded but they were XC tires and they came right off. Didn't even have to use a trash can.

But if you have true steel bead minions, I'm curious which ones and what rims you have. I'm sure you know, there are foldable DH minions, Kevlar beaded and Steel wire bead as well as different compounds. Are yours true wire bead Minions? What kind of rims did you have and how wide are they? Where they 60a durometer 2 plys, 40a's, MaxPro's or EXO's? Also what size, 2.35's or 2.50's or larger? Reason I ask is you can see in the vid the rims he has are tall skinny XC type rims not typical wider DH rims. They have a deep well in the middle. Mine don't. Also it looked on the first tire his hand pressing on the sidewall the rubber crinkles easy which appears the rubber is real flimsy papery thin like single plys and foldables. My Sun MTX 33's are lower in height, wider, don't have anywhere near the well in the middle like the one in the vid and mine have a really thick side wall compared to my Azonic outlaws sidewalls that went on super easy. You could not do this on my Sun MTX 33mm rims. No way in hell. I tried for two hours and broke tire levers till I figured out using KY with a little water. Even when I got my tires on before I could never seat the tire so it wouldn't wobble. With KY and water, boost the air up in the tube, you don't even hear the pop when it seats. It just slips right up over the lip. I can post a vid up of how easy it went on and off, a lot easier to do than what you see in this video. Taking a tire off is a lot easier than putting it back on. And the vid, you can see the tire flexing super easy when he squeezes it on the vid. It looks flimsly single ply or foldable to me.

the worst i ever had to deal with was a intense tire (one of the 4 ply ones) with a dh tube, i got it off using hub wrenches..... turns out they make great tire levers :thumb:.

I have put on 40a 2.5 dhf's and 3c 2.7 dhf's. The first time getting them on is tough and I had to use one lever, but after that I can get them on and off with no tools.

Today I got a pinch flat and after changing the tube I was having a very hard time getting the last bit of my wire beaded ignitor back on the rim and was getting pretty frustrated..

Then BIGHITR comes rollin down the trail, stops to help me, and sees my situation. He pulls out the KY, puts some on the bead and the rim, and the tire just slides right on without a problem. It was like magic!

Thanks again man!

All depends on the combo...some tires are way tighter than others. I think the worst I ever had was an Intense 4 ply on a Mag 30.

:weee: YES!!! Another satisfied customer testimonial!!!!! :D::monkeydance::dance:

You could have embellished though, like "I had a flat and BigHitr comes flying down hill doing a whip off a 12 foot drop and see's I'm broke down and..." LOL :thumb: :D

I told you when I stopped I had the stuff to get that thing right on! Everyone laughs when I mention it on here but now you know the trick! Pass the word on man! I've told everyone on here so they'll try it out. That thing wasn't going on without it. Seeing you forgot though, I'll mention I squirted some water from my Camelbak on the rim and tire to make the KY super slick. You need water with it. Stuff works man! I can't tell people enough. Glad I could help you out! I only wish I could have helped out a poor guy that bent his rim and pinched his tire last weekend. I gave him my scabs and they didn't work. We pulled the tire and he had four long slits in his innertube. I normally carry a tube for that purpose but I already had given it away to someone and forgot to replace it in my Camelbak but I got one in there now.

Well, glad to help you out buddy! No go forth and spread the word! Walmart brand KY Jelly personal lubricant! :brows: Stuff works!!! :weee:

The same technique works for ANY tire and rim, and if you do not use it you are just making things tougher on yourself, even if you are using levers.

I do not need levers or lube for DH tires on Sun rims. Dead easy--using the same method in my video.

If you have a shallow center drop rim, use a thin rim tape. Strapping tape instead of Velox can be the difference between newer impossible and easy.

Shiggy, go tell that to the guy stuck in the woods trying to get his tire on next time,... In fact when in the woods, you should say, "Check out my vid and see how easy it is! Oh, you'll also need a trash can! Forgot to mention that..."

The truth is not all wire beaded tires and rims are alike. Some are harder to get on than others. Your method does not work with mine. It won't. It can't, and it don't. Try Maxxis Minion 60a durometer dual wall, 2.50 with a 33mm MTX rim. In fact, post the video of your success.

For you, a trash can. For everyone else, Walmart brand KY Lubricant and a little water from your water pack and it slips on easier than your vid. Trust me, I"d post a vid of me putting on mine with one hand while filming with the other hand but it's too many megabytes for me to waste time uploading it to prove your method harder with two hands.

P.S. I don't have velox. Mine's a thin what looks like nylon film.

hahahhahaha I just came back and read this thread! So Bighitr seriously rides around with personal lubricant? Sounds a little sketchy to me...

Since I started this thread I switched to an Atomlab Pimp DJ wheelset paired with Kenda SB8's for my slalom bike. All tires and rims should fit together like this. So easy to work with and super stable railing berms. My S-types and wire bead Minions on my DH bike are still a huge PITA though. But I got some extra thick DH tubes and haven't had to change a tube in 4 months
