looking to build a new wheelset and was thinking of using the super comp triple butted spokes. anybody have any experience with them? gonna be disc, xc race wheel, king to stans crest rims, plan on using brass nipples. worth the little weight over regular DB spokes? would they be any stronger? i tend to plow like a dh hack...

I have used them before, no issues. I weigh 145 with clothes and pack though, but I ride hard on the North Shore. I just built myself a set of 29er Crest wheels with Super Comps aluminum nipples and DT Swiss 350 hubs. For race wheels go with aluminum nipples. Fair bit of weight saving there. You can only build Stan's rims to about 100 kgf which isn't super tight. Use a good four sided spoke wrench and you won't round off any nipples. Lube them well and use some sort of thread locking compound and your gold.

yea they're race wheels, but i plan on riding them more often than just racing. with already heavy hubs, ~40g doesnt really seem worth the durability imo, the rims are light enough.

as far as spokes, what about the cx rays? read nothing but good reviews, besides the pricepoint, any negatives? do you need a special tool to hold the spoke while you tension them like mavic wheelsets w/ bladed spoke?

Pliers hold bladed spokes just fine. They do provide an excellent visual on wind up though so you can simply rotate the nipple back until the spoke is un wound. The spoke winds up because the spoke sticks to the nipple. Mostly a concern when the wheel is old and nipples and spokes have become corroded together somewhat. New stuff you will have lubricated so windup will be less of an issue.
