I stopped by my local bike shop to check out the new rides. I had intensions of replacing my 10 year old Hardrock with a new 26" hardtail. Before I left the store the salesmen (a friend of mine) had me talked into the gorgeous Talon 29er. I am pretty sure I am going to pick the bike up. I am just a little nervous about the hydro brakes. Are they durable? The old cantilever brakes were so simple that I could maintain them myself. It will also be my first 29er. Seams like a great bike for the money. Am I wrong?

Just got one, all I can say is that for the price is hard to beat it. For less than a grand no other brand will give you hydro brakes (most do mechs) and 9 gears.

The ride is smooth, climbs well and descends even better. Future upgrades will be crankset, air fork (will happen when they break) and tubeless kit.

Hydraulic brakes are very reliable. Probably more so that mechanical brakes of any type. Bleeding can be an issue on some but most are doable by a home mechanic with a few tools and good instructions. Bleeding is a once a year or less thing.

I have essentially the same bike but with stinkier parts. I am enjoying it immensely. Mine has XTR 2X10 with the trail 2X so I am running a 26X38 and 11-36. XO brakes (which are a challenge to bleed) F29 Fox fork, DT 350 hubs super comp spokes aluminum nipples and Crest rims, Nobby Nic 2.25 tires run tubeless. Thomson post, Chromag Moon saddle, Easton 285mm wide AC70 flat bar and a short 70 -8 degree Giant stem. Weighs just under 24 pounds.
