I was watching the Dirt finals vid last night and I knew the bike setups were pretty stiff for the pedally nature of the track, but Gee's bike seemed crazy stiff. Suspension hardly seemed like it was moving... even off the larger jumps.

Don't think this has been mentioned, but is well known. Barel runs the EXACT same mud tire for ALL races. He just cuts the knobs to different heights depending on the track. He's done it for years. I remember reading about it the year he won Worlds & Peat fell.

A lot has changed in 7 years . . . ;)

For what it's worth, a fully cut (center and sides) wet scream holds pretty well on hard pack and really rolls quite fast. It actually has a profile very similar to that of a narrow DHF. An odd choice given the other options, but not all that risky.

Was going to say, it wasn't long ago you could spot Barel on WTB Timberwolfs...

Wow, a cut spike for the dry...someone should make one of those. Oh wait, Specialized did... If only I had $150 lying around to try a pair. Don't think Brendan or Sam were on them for this race though.

^Yup. There's several pictures of Jacy cutting down the Butchers, not the Hillbillies. A dry spike is still made for traction, not minimum rolling resistance.

What happened to Anneke Beerten in the XC?

the UCI page doesn't have a finishing time for her, and no indication of DNF or DNS...? I'm just curious to see how one of "us" does in one of "their" events... :monkey:

Anneke had to pull out int he 4th lap. there was a killer punchy climb in the track, and her legs were dead from winning 4x the night before. I think her official result was 54th/lapped?

Risky to run a semi-slick on such a track ?

I think the only real risk was a few seconds gain. So I think his choice was really "bizarre".

LaPierre edit up on Dirt: http://dirt.mpora.com/news/2011-pietermaritzburg-world-cup-lapierre-episode-1.html

I found it interesting that Blenki complained about not being able to pedal because his feet kept getting blown off in the chunder. Of course, this is total armchair quarterbacking, but it seems to me that clipless pedals and different shock tuning could help with that no? Or maybe it's just that the bike's linkage design doesn't work well when those two conditions happen at the same time (pedalling through chop)... :D

He could just have had an off day. But clips definetly is a big advantage when pedaling through choppy terrain.

Is all of the pedaling in split #2. If so, pedaling wasn't Blenki's problem. He lost most of his time in #1.

Will join you in armchair analysis here. That Lapierre has huge amounts of chainstretch as the suspension compresses past the sag point.

I think we need accurate measurments as the movement beyond sag makes me puzzled. It looks like they try to keep the stretch constant because increasing it after sag with a floating bb would be really stupid. If it is constant it shouldnt kick like a horse.
It's pretty easy for me to see from that video. After the sag point the chainstay length grows significantly because the BB is moving forward. The rate of change from the sag point is more severe than a high pivot bike with stationary BB. It's gonna kick like a horse. Worse than a 222 I'd bet.

Well that's what I see as well but i suspected I was blind and that the CS stops going rearwards after the sag point. It would make sense with the bb going forwards at the same time.

That site is so cool. Always something interesting.

Looks like Yeti dominated the top speed on that course. Graves and O'Connor both almost hit 49 mph, the next closest was Minaar @ 43 mph!

Can't just be coincidence that the two fastest guys (by far) were on the same bike. Wonder why?
