Looks super nice but that being a shimano I doubt it will be quiet after a while.

I wonder though why sram never tries to go shadow and get that low profile.

I really wish they'd split their DH group up into 2 groups. Higher quality lighter weight beefed up xtr ish stuff, and then slightly heavier simpler lower budget stuff....I think that was the intention with the hone group, so maybe what I'm saying is that I wish the saint stuff would meet in the middle between where it currently stands, and the xtr trail stuff....

Short cage slx mechs, and 4pot xtr trail brakes with their current lineup. So easy to implement yet so much better.

Pivots, springs, everything. I have not encountered a quiet shimano derail. They feel great (only sram x.0 shifter has similar shifting quality as the higher shimano models imho) but Id only use shimano for road bikes where they have no chance to rattle.
I've had 3 days of riding on the 2012 XTR derailleurs, and they work ridiculously well at eliminating chain slap, snapping precise shifts, and overall making your bike super quiet and smooth.

... and this from a guy who swears by SRAM so whole-heartedly that he still runs Grip Shift on his entire fleet.

Is this the one you are using, the XTR Shadow Plus that has the switch? Do you think the XTR derailleurs with the new dampening stabilizer will eliminate the need for chainguides? At least on trail bikes?

Let them make XT with the same technology and SS cage... and I am going to consider switching back to Shimano drivetrain ;)

I'm still on a supershort dura ace that I've been running for (I think) about 4 years now... it's not bent, and has no slop in it.

And before you say anything, I've cracked my frame, destroyed chain devices, bent bottom brackets/pedals, put numerous dents in my downtube... so it's not that I ride super gently!

You are crazy ;) I stopped using GripShift on my dh bike after I starded to shift on harsh landings. If your bike has some chain stretch it will rip your derail out off it very often. For trailbike though I still love them ;)

traitor! ;)

sounds like user error. 15 year on gripshift and not a single mis-shift...even on large hits
For a long time it never happened to me but after I was unable to race because of that I decided to ditch it.

btw. Thats a bold claim. No issues but misshifts happen ;)

well, it is true. i never keep enough of my hand on the shifter to have a mis-shift.
i only keep a small portion of my hand on the shifter which is more than enough to switch gears but not enough to change gears after a crash or hard hit.

Yep, that's the one. Whether it completely eliminates the need for a chainguide on a trail bike is up for debate, but it definitely does a great job controlling the chain. I'll probably continue to run a DRS due to my loyalty to my old company (e13 for life, yo), but whether I actually *need* it . . . who knows. If nothing else it's great peace of mind and the bashguard protects the rings.

Cliffy, that sick lines deal has nothing to do with this new RD.
Craig, have you guys tested this new RD out yet? Will this solve the issue of fitting dual ring chainguides on VPP2 Tracer for example, since you won't need it anymore, assuming this RD keeps the bike from dropping chains?

Oh, I know. Just info for the people who thought a short cage on anything but Saint wasn't possible.

Shoot, I'm currently running a mid-cage 980 and it's brilliant. Especially mated to the new shifter. Dumping two gears at once from the forward paddle is just awesome. I just missed out on the "Shadow Plus" version, but I'm looking into getting one. ;)

Have tested, like John P says, its debateable if this RD will completely eliminate needing a chainguide, certainly was silent and no chain loss on the Intense bikes I rode with it.

@cliffy, sorry, I got confused with some people on the vital thread thinking the sicklines link was saying this new RD is just a 'kewl' new color or cage, its more than that.

Signed,

Trying to get hold of cages on their own is a nightmare though (at least in the uk). I can't just take them of my m810 as I smashed that to pieces already.
Not really a problem here in Germany. Bought two sets a while ago for my saint derailleur. But they are 30 Euros per set.

F no. Still rolling on 8.

However, I'm building up a new trail bike here at Yeti, and I'm afraid I'm finally going to have to bite the bullet and jump to 10spd (Cue: fire and brimstone; dogs and cats living together).
you really think its that easy to trigger the apocalyps, do you? :D

Can you post a pic? I'm used to the version in the Pinkbike review. Gee's tires have tighter spaced blocks with no "Kaiser" logo...
I think it has to do more with the camera shot than anything. You can find my pics here:
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Team-RM-East/198574363492842

Had my first run on them this past weekend. I have to say I am impressed and happy with them. I have not had a tire that was as good as the Michelin Comp 16 till now. Finally a tire I can trust to push hard on......

Right. You've got the version I have. I agree, great tire indeed. But, there's a notable difference to my eye...

Here's what the tire on Gee's bike looks like:

Then compared to ours:

The tires on Gee's bike are clearly not current Kaisers. The side knobs are evenly spaced and the Kaiser has two close together then a bigger gap until the next two.

You're right. But see how the other version's labeled Kaiser? I need to talk to my rep. about this. It's almost like there's either an international version of the tire, or a prototype maybe...?

Talked to the Conti brand manager at SOC. Those prototypes are called Der Ramstein. He wasn't sure if they would keep that name on the production version or not. He didn't know what the time line for their release would be either. He did say they would be coming.

the first 2 pic above are 08/09 proto tires of the kaiser that never made it to the US (some still kicking in euro obviously).

the bottom picture is the 10/11 retail version of the kaiser (worldwide)

the tires in the OP are protos of the rammstein tire that does not replace the kaiser or baron, but is an intermediate tire to complement them.

Cool. Thanks for the info. It's a tire I want to try. Personally, I hope it's a touch smaller than the Kaiser, but I'm sure they'll use the same casing as a base.
