I might be travelling out to NY city on business. I'd be in the city from June 6-10. While I am out that direction, I want to hit a bike park. Thinking Diablo Freeride Park. I'm thinking either fly into Newark on Friday June 6/3 and ride 6/4 & 6/5 or Ride the following weekend or maybe if I am lucky enough both weekends. I have been thinking about travelling with my DH bike.

Does anyone have any recommendations for travelling with the DH bike or do I ship it directly to Diablo? Cheap places to stay and anything else anyone can help me out with?

Thanks in advance.

He could rather easily rent a car. Shipping the bike wouldn't make much sense unless he had it shipped to his hotel. I'm pretty sure diablo won't accept shipment of the bike since they don't do bike storage, but I could be wrong.

Some airlines provide the option of checking a "fragile" item. Look into what your carrier's rule is for this. Might help avoid some damage while in transit.

If you won't be renting a car, check out www.nycmtb.com and post on their forum. It's possible someone may be able to give you a ride out there from the city. Quite a few NYC based DHers (myself included).

What part of the city are you staying in?

Agree that if you have two weekends you should hit up Plattekill. Even if you have only one weekend I would hit up both places. Two places are very different but both offer tons of good riding.

I normally bring my bike in card board bike box from the LBS which I reinforce with a lot of tape but you will be charged for oversize and maybe even too much weight too. I normally put clothes and other stuff in there too to have less baggage and use it as protection for the bike too.

I have some co workers that live in jersey and commute into the office everyday. I'm sure they wouldn't mind if I shipped it to their place. I plan to ask here very soon. I'm sure they wouldn't mind if I picked it up and assembled the bike and made my way to mountain creek, Plattekill or where ever.

I was thinking of renting a car at maybe Newark Airport and then driving to the places I want to go and then just returning the car at the airport and taking the train into Manhattan.

As far as how to bringing the bike into the city. I wouldn't I'd leave it at my co-workers house during the week if I am able to ride two weekends. Otherwise when I brought it back to his place I'd box it back up and get it shipped back to Colorado.

I don't know. I have some logistics to work out. Especially if I do bring it to the city as "Sporting Equipment". :)

I'll be there the 4th and 5th. Maybe ill see ya out there :thumb:
Look for me. I'll be wearing a blue royal race kit that says "Kozos" on it.

Just because your flying into newark doesnt mean you cant bring sports equipment with you!

One option for a cheap two-park weekend, would be to head out to plattekill in the morning, ride all day then camp overnight, then head to diablo in the morning. Two parks, total lodging cost $10....

As for bike shipping, when I did my adventure race in KS, I purchased a 62" suitcase, folded my c'dale prophet in half, packed it with foam, then shipped the wheels separately. Everything made it in one piece. It was free to fly, but the wheels cost me about $30 to ship each way. Still might beat $150, which I think is what it costs to ship a complete bike nowadays.

I've flown with my bike (bike box) a few times and I have always found it less expensive than using FedEx/UPS. That being said, it can be a pain in the ass getting from or to one of the NYC airports via public transpiration with a Bike Box (i've done it a few times).

Hit me up if you are rolling out, I live and work in the city and can drive ya out to Diablo.
