The wife and I are going up to the Lassen National Forest. Specifically Lake Almanor and the Feather River area for some hiking and Fly Fishing in two weeks. Gotta get the gear out and the rig all packed up....somehow I think it will be a bad idea if I try to take the Mt Bike on this one. Downieville later this summer is a yes but this trip nope.

MMMM Fresh grilled trout with cold beer sounds so good:thumb:

Well, I'm jealous.

There's too damn much water here - the fly fishing is pretty much non-existent. You can get out on some of the lakes, but that's about it. Just a bunch of murky, flooding rivers around here. The ****ty part is that the fun mountain lakes in the Bitterroot are all still frozen over.

At least I can still go skiing.

good times fishing up there. My friend Bruce Conner[rip] had the Bitterroot flowing through his front yard [and yes those Conners whom the town is named for]. took me up to T.C. Creek, The Madison, The Big Hole and a whole bunch of other places to drop a Dry Fly and have some kick arse fun.

Yeah, it's been pretty rough being a 5 minute bike ride from where Rattlesnake Creek dumps into the Clark Fork.

But my favorite place is the creeks and lakes up in the Bitterroot. There's some places where the fish see wont see a fly all year long. It's hard to not catch fish up there.

Bah! Sounds like a bunch of fun. I've been trying to pick up fly fishing this year, but having never known or had the pleasure of meeting anyone that does it I'm kind of at a loss.

It really isnt hard to do, its a matter of getting the gear and going for it. You dont have to spend a ton to get into it. Go down to a Bass pro and get a starter kit that comes pre filled on the reel and go for it. Seriously the hardest part is tyeing the leaders.... which you can buy pretied/made. As far as casting goes with fly fishing, its more important to put it were you want than it is to get distance.

Plenty of info on the internet. Casting well takes a bit to learn, but you can catch fish your first trip out for sure. Or, you could always take a class or go out with a guide and learn really quickly.

My dad and I have gone fishing on Hazel Creek inside Great Smoky Mtn Natl Park and he fly fished, I used single hook spinners. It's not stocked, only native trout, so the catch is slim and the fish are tiny.

But I always catch more than him...and he looks to be having a terrible time. :D

so after talking to my wife, she wants to try Fly Fishing. She has excellent hand eye coordination from flying fighter jets so picking up the basics should be easy for her. Looks like Saturday out on the grass field for some casting lessons and if she likes it, off to the Fly shop for a entry level set up. kind of cool if you ask me.

25 in most places, I got my limit, mom and dad filled in the rest.

Perris here right by thehouse has had a recent boom in the bass population, them and silverwood have dropped there limit to fifteen, they want there to be enough to feed the new found bass population they quired when they just recently raised the lake fifteen feet..... Made for miles of new bass habitat right before spawning season..... been a good season

I tried casting around a little bit and I guess I can throw a fly in the general vicinity of where I want to, the issue is more knowing where I should be targeting with my casts, what flies to throw, how to work them, etc. I bought a few general purpose flies, wooly buggers, muddler minnows, some nymphs and dries; guess I just need to get out there and throw them all until something grabs it.

You know I just live up the way a bit from you.......... I have a ton of gear if you want to make a run some day....

You will want Nymphs, emergers, some bead heads, and some may flies.... good starting hatch there... Cant go wrong with a wooly bugger

But I will tell you this, aim three to four feet above your target, that way your line, leader and fly all fall as gentle and natural as possible. Imagine if you will a hoola hoop floating about that height above your target and your trying to drop the fly into it.

Fly fishing is more about accuracy than it is distance by a long shot

Sports Chalet had a bunch of SA sets prelines for 50 bucks..... Not the greatest reels but for trout fishing you dont really need more than just to hold the line for ya............ Good quality too. That and BPS has alot of them on sale right now for around the same price too....

Well it wasn't elegant by any means but Ruth got to the point of making 30-40 foot casts to a 4x4 target in the yard without snagging a tree branch or snapping off a fly using my 8 foot rod with a 5wt WF line and an 8 foot leader. I think she will do fine out on the streams and lakes after a bit more practice

got her this starter set up

in the 8 foot version

Very Nice. Great starter set right there. The pole is actually a very nice pole, only thing to upgrade later would be the line itself. WF is always a good way to go for starters, what I learned on. Usually find myself with a double taper nowadays on the float tube, stil have a couple spools ready with WF though for shor fishing or when I just need that extra long cast. I just redressed my 5wt sink line about ten minutes ago for tomorrow morning as it is. Tediopus, but worth it.

What line are you using for leaders/tippets? Just picked up some 4x 5x 6x and 7x frogs hair line for myself...... Damn this stuff is thin... I have to actually get my glasses out to see it.

On six of my reels I have SA main lines.... just cant beat the quality for the price

I so want to learn how to do this. My Dad too.
Its really easier than it looks. Specially with the quality of rods these days. The worst part is getting setup to begin with.

Like Eric is doing though, always buy flies when you get local to were your going. The shops always know what works best in the area

Worst day fishing is still better than the best day working.

I decided to put on a new line and backing last night. It had been so long that I was suprised to see monofilament. I replaced it with 100 yards of 20# test dacron and a scientific anglers WF-6F Line
