I'm currently trying to break into mountain biking and my 1996 Rockhopper I got in a trade 2 years ago took a crap on me after a small drop off.

I am trying to research all mountain bikes that would be good for a beginner wishing to pursue more aggressive track as skills improve. I'd like to stay under 2 grand for my first "purchased" bike as I would hate to trash it in my "infancy stage" of riding...any input would be awesome! :D

Also I am about 5'3 and weight a buck and some change.

Cheers!

I'd also check out Konas - something like the Tanuki. I know there isn't a ton of love around here for Kona, but I've owned two of them in the past and found them to be really well build and well equipted for the price.

First Post and Using Comic Sans ?

now more details about the type of riding you plan on doing ?

XC racing ? DH racing ?Trail riding ? or going out to hit all the free ride parks ? and ecerything in between ?

are you thinking hardtail or full suspension ?
LOL, yeah Comic Sans was the result of being bored to tears at the office!

At this point I'm not sure what type of riding I will be doing most. Trail riding is what I have most access to at the moment, but I'd like to have something versatile enough to explore different riding types to find my niche.

Also, I was leaning towards full suspension.

Thanks to everyone for the information!! Much appreciated! :D

My advice? Um... find a shop near you and try out the bikes they have. then come back here and post up what you are looking at and get some direct feedback on them (including price).

Just starting out? TREK 6500...my local shop has one or two on sale for 1400$

I saved up and bought a 2012 Santa Cruz Superlight for $1800 tax included. great deal for FS and XT/fox component set.
