Managed to break my rear rim this weekend..looking at chainreaction now, under 26" rims section, but there are like a billion different ones.

What do I look for, for DH?

Yeah, as far as i know. Two spokes were bent and the rim was a little dented. It wasnt too big a deal, i just bent everything back and its fine now.

Outlaws in my experience are tough and inexpensive.

@Ed517 - A key thing to keep in mind is to have well built wheels and keep an eye on your spoke tension.

721 for a good compromise of weight/ strength- I think you'll spend less in the long run by going with a tougher rim than an outlaw. If you look hard enough online, I'm pretty sure mavic grey and silver are still available- sometimes cheaper than black.

X2 for 721. Been running mine with a 1" crack and massive dent from a practice run right before a race run and its still going strong tubeless (ghetto) 3 months later and a few more hash marks and gouges.

721's have proven to be more solid than i would have thought. Great rim great profile.:thumb:

721s are a great compromise of strength Vs weight, but are a touch narrow. 823 is my favourite rim for weight/strength + UST.
Atomlab Pimplights are best for durability and still a decent weight. if you want strong, go them. They won't dent easy though, meaning more pinchflats with tubes I guess(I run ghetto tubeless on mine so no problem).

729s are indestructible. my buddy had a set that he used to ride a ton on stair gaps and stuff before we knew any better (read: he cased it a lot). on the rear rim 2/3 of the nipple holes were cracked, and it had more than a few flat spots, but it still rolled true with no wobbles. i've got a similar 729 that came on my bike in similar shape and i've run it just to see how long it will last (going on 3 years in my hands).

they use the same tech and materials in the 721. i'm gonna try those on my next buildup as i'm sure they are get strength to weight.

i've run a couple sets of outlaws and only managed to dent one rear once, which i think was more a low psi issue than anything else. great cheap, disposable wheelset.

i have 823s at the moment and i don't like them too much, those rims are rather narrow and give the tire a rounder shape, they also seem to be prone to snake bite (i ride with tubes!) and getting the tires on and off the rim is a major PITA... but they seem very robust, no dents or cracks. my riding buddies are riding them tubeless and are liking them a lot more then i do (so it's maybe really just me, who doesn't like them).
my favorites are mavic 729, a wide and (almost) indestructible rim, not too heavy and still rather cheap.

@worship_mud: you're deceiving people here... 823's are awsum! And we had this discussion before - You're supposed to tide them tubeless - otherwise 721 is basically the same rim (width wise) as the 823, but for tubes - I also found 721 to be prone to snakebites.

However I never found 729's to be that durable (rim edges prone to breaking/bending under snake bite scenarios). All in all I broke at up to 4 729's per season in my old days (Ok, I have to admit other rims only lasted a run or two).

As an alternative to Mavic, I've been happy with a rear Sun MTX29. Just got it as part of the Nukeproof AM wheelset and wasn't expecting much, but I've been impressed with how ding resistant it is, at least as good as a 721 IMO.

azonic out laws come in pretty colors and are pretty tuff
My new game plan involves purchasing a few sets of outlaws to back up the stock set I have now. At just a few hundred for a pair, I can stock up on backup wheelsets.

Then again, I have a 2010 Demo8, and I need a 135/10 rear, which is a bit tough to find (it seems); so, that limits my choices.

Halo's new chaos rim if your looking for a viable alternative to 721s, ive changed over and found they are every bit as good so far.

used to run 823s, but been going lighter nd lighter after a season of not destroying a set ;)

Main thing is to get it built up properly.

Alex Supra D's for 1000%.

I have two sets, and they have been passed between two different DH bikes, and my do it all HT single speed that I use for crazy fun stupid DH days... Thhey are incredible. They have been so strong, trued once when knew - and other than one or two quick tweaks now and then - they are awesome. Going on 4 years now.

Now I have a set of Sun MTX 31 on a new bike I got (swapping out as I write) and rode them at Bromont first weekend - and two flats, and a huge flat spot! I know Bromont is tough - but never had similar problems with my Supra D's, not in 4 years now.

++++ Supra D.
----- MTX 31.

I've ran:

Sun EQ 31
Sun MTX 31
Sun MTX 33
Mavic 729
Mavic 823

I ride really hard. I hit gnarly ****, huge gaps, drops, jumps, and ride fast DH.

The winner is 823.

But not as strong as 823 or Atom labs. Good if you're after colorways or get them cheap.
Ive seen some catalog parts in their lineup. Compare their rims with dartmoor and see if you cant get the same for a bit cheaper. Thats loaded I mean.

Though Id go 823 rear, stans front.
