Okay, got my SixSixOne Fenix Weave helmet in today... was wondering about fit questions. It's pretty hard like slightly painful on the hair pulling to squeeze my 22.5 inch head into a medium that is like borderline between a medium/large @ 22.5" however, once it's on, it's snug, with a teeny tiny bit of play. Not much. Don't feel like it's killing my head but fits snug on the cheeks and just enough room around the ears to breath. Should I go a little looser with a large or should I stick with the medium? I figure the pads will break in. Also, not crazy about the blocked view of my arms and such from the full shell but guess I could get used to it compared to a bare faced giro for 15 years...

Fitting Thoughts...?

P.S. Body armor finally ordered and on the way!!! :weee: Can't wait to start being a bad ass when it all comes in. Considering I had a bad fall three weeks back and skidded about 20 feet bare armed and survived my head pounding the ground with a Giro, and got up with some arm burns, a red cheek pounded into the ground mark and a tiny scratch on the leg, I can't WAIT to see how fast I probably can go when I know I can slam into the ground with protection... THIS is going to be fun! I am SOOO freaking stoked now!!! CAN'T WAIT TO GET OUT IN ALL OF IT!!! :weee:
Sorry, beat the taggers to the punch... hee hee heeeee!

Serious input would be great guys. I don't want to wear it and not be able to send it back so I want to know about fit now before I wear it in the woods and sweat it up. Or scratch it up. I don't remember helmets supposed to be tight. I can put my finger between my forehead on the left and right to push my hair up under it but I can't fit it between my forehead and the helmet in the middle. There's no room. The cheek part is what I guess bothers me the most. It fits real tight on my cheeks. Is it suppose to? I I would expect some looseness would be desired, yes? This one has very little play. The size chart stops at 22.5 inch for small and begins with 22.5 inch for large. My head is about 22.75 actually so I'm wondering if I should go with the medium snug and wait for it to break in or just go with a large and enjoy it loose. I also wonder if it could be stretched. For example, would putting something large between the opening for a few days force it to stay wider at the opening or would it just spring back. Getting it on it's really tight. Once on, it's snug.

Anyone that wears a full shell want to comment if theirs is loose fit or snug?

Go to a shop. Ask someone to help fit you a helmet. If the correct fit s what you currently have keep your helmet. if it's too tight (which it sounds like it is) get a large and return your old one.

If you don't have a good bike shop go to a moto store.

Is it really that hard?

Yes, it is. Because I live in Maryland home of the 5 story building high park, meaning at peak it's about a five story building. Not exactly CALI now is it!? We have no mountains, we have no downhill racing, we have single track in a park, get the picture!? My DH bike I ordered was the FIRST EVER SOLD at the Maryland Bike Doctor where I bought it. The guy was so enthused he actually sold one and said to me it was his first ever big hit bike in his shop and the first he ever sold! NO ONE RIDES A DH BIKE AROUND WHERE I AM! SO THERE ARE NO BIKE SHOPS IN MY AREA THAT KEEP EXPENSIVE DH HELMETS AND ARMOR IN STOCK FOR NO ONE THAT WILL BUY THEM!!! MOTORCYCLE HELMETS AND BIKE HELMETS ARE DIFFERENT!! THEY ARE DIFFERENT IN WEIGHT AND PADDING'S DIFFERENT. I WENT TO A MOTORCYCLE SHOP AND DID JUST WHAT YOU SAID AND THE GUY TOLD ME TO GO TO A BIKE SHOP BECAUSE OF REASONS STATED ABOVE!!! THEREFOR I'M ON HERE ASKING FOR ASSISTANCE! ANY PROBLEM WITH ME ASKING FOR HELP ON HERE OR DO YOU JUST WANT TO BE A JACKASS!!?

Christ, I come on here once in a blue moon and ask a tech question and every moron in the world rings in with his philosophy! If it was easy, I wouldn't be on here asking!

The moto store guy couldn't tell you how a helmet should fit? The padding may be different but there are more than a few mtb guys who use moto helmets, the sizing theory is still the same. If you'd tried one on and felt how a helmet should fit then you could tell whether your fancy new 661 was the right size or not.

I wasn't being a jackass, I was merely stating that when buying a helmet get it fitted, don't leave it up to chance or some guy on the internet.

Also when a size guide says its for a head width which your head size exceeds it's normally too small. Just a hint

The medium goes up to 22.5. The large goes from 22.5 and UP. What pray tell would you suggest if your head is 22.5 inches? And the moto guy said snug is good. I wanted to hear from bike guys that wear full shell to find out their experience. I don't trust a guy that knows moto helmets which he said are much more padded and heavier. He didn't know anything about cycling helmets. As to fit, he told me how it should fit but I described above how it fits and would like to hear from full shell riders if the helmet sounds like it fits good. The moto guy said the cheeks should be tight to hold the helmet in place. He said that's normal.

What makes you think that a "cycling helmet" should fit different to a "moto helmet"? The helmet you purchased is infact a moto helmet so going by your own stated ideas... shouldnt it fit like a moto helmet????
Im mainly curious as to where you got this idea from:think:

Try wear it in your house for a few hours. If it's not comfy send it back. If you get used to it, it should be fine.

Is that better advice?

CLARIFICATION: Pulling the measuring tape around head with hair, 22.75. Pulling it tight around head, 22.5 which is right smack in the middle of medium large size.

did you buy two?
No, why? You want to get in on Pricepoint's great deal and you need a medium? I looked all over the internet. The same helmet goes for like $348 in other online retail shops. But don't think the thought has not crossed my mind to buy two and send one back to avoid all the RM rhetoric. If you want the medium, I'll buy a large, and sell you the medium if the large fits me better for just $200. :D

Wear it around the house a while... Look at the post above mine. If you answer no to that question, then keep the helmet and give it time to break in and conform to your head's shape.

this. Helmets do break in.

Also, a couple of general rules for a good helmet fit:

Tight enough around the cheeks pinching them such that you would bite your cheeks if you weren't careful.

Tight enough on the head so that when you wobble your head around vigorously, the helmet does not rotate or pitch independently of your head.

And remember, it will pack out a little bit over time, I always go for the smaller helmet if I'm on the cusp, because it will end up fitting me well, for longer.

fwiw, I ride moto helmets for dh.

Wait a sec... am I the only one that noticed this? Dude... I don't know what part of MD you are in but you are doing it wrong. And as far as shops go, the one I work at (and told you about) is a full-fledged DH shop, with *gasp* DH BIKES ON THE FLOOR!!! We even have body armor!!!

BINGO!!! EXACTLY!!! Finally someone that knows what I'm talking about! If I bite my teeth open and closed I bite my cheeks. That's exactly how it fits. Wobble head around and it moves with me with a slight movement which is hair. So apparently I have exactly what I need. That's good to know. Thanks man! I was worried it was too tight.

Wow, didn't even think about Princeton! Forgot all about you guys. Bike Doctor don't have DH pads or DH bikes at all. Race Pace don't have Raceface Pads. If they do I missed them. I didn't see any serious DH bikes in there either. And Cyclesport don't have DH pads or DH bikes in house when I was in there last.

You have Raceface pads at Princeton? Rockgardn? Really? All sizes?

No. TLD, 661, and POC. select sizes (very difficult to stock for a clientele that mostly shops online--same old LBS bullsh*t). but most don't go to a LBS for selection--you go for the service/knowledge. being MD it is mostly a Tri-focused clothing/equipment selection--but we are slowly building up the DH stuff.

So you're pretty much saying what I said earlier. It's Maryland. Not Cali... Very difficult for ANY LBS to stock that stuff because rarely a guy like me comes in and says, "Got any DH pads?" How about full shell helmets?" LOL People don't realize this is Maryland. Home of the single track five story decent! So what you are saying above... umm... so I would have wasted the trip over? You don't have in stock Raceface Rally DH or Rockgardn DH pads there? I would think it don't make sense to try on pads from another manufacturer then order that size in another company's pads. Obviously they wouldn't be the same fit. That's what I was looking for. And I had no choice but to buy the more expensive helmet. Everyone all over the net sold out of the Oneal Fury Repeat helmet that was only $89.

For few years I was using 661 M size (56-58cm) mtb helmets. Now I have fox V-1 moto helmet, M size as well, but it is made for 57-58cm head. My head is 56,5 cm and this M sized Fox fits realy tight, much tighter than my 56-58cm 661 mtb helmet!
