never been down to timberline to ride...so why would someone go to timberline over snowshoe if coming from pittsburgh?

Not knocking the mtn at all just wondering what the general trail feel is...glad to see the program is running looks natural and fun...

Different vibe, hometown mtn vs corporate mtn with machine groomed trails.

Timberline trails are single track with some atv race lines that are pretty unique for dh riding. There isn't a machine groomed A-Line type trail on the mountain but it has a several fast flowy backcountry-like single track trails mixed with some old 24hr XC race trails, and ATV race lines. It has similar vert, steep tech trails, and some jump features for half the ticket price.

Here is a review from a well traveled rider (from DC area) . . .

tl;dr - timberline has lots of great DH trails, is close, and Im going back soon.

My wife and I spent a long weekend in the canaan valley / Davis area so I snuck over to Timberline for a day to check out their DH trails.

first thing you notice is the camraderie of the riders as you enter the shop. After buying a lift ticket I got paired up with a regular who showed me the trails. Everyone there is super nice, especially the manager of the trails, JR. He is an old skool rider and ex motoXer (and he can rip) and is really excited about the trails that he and his crew are putting a lot of work into.

Made my way over to the lift, which is a 3 chair with bike hook similar to wisp. However you can hang your bike on the hook whichever way you want so as to not damage derailleur or scratch the finish. Lift speed is a moderate pace. Not super fast but not slow.

first thing that surprised me about the trails is how many of them there were. timberline hasnt done the best job getting word out on the amount of stuff they have here. nothing on the timberline website and no published trail maps on the web. plenty to ride to keep you busy for a weekend, in a day I only rode about half what they had and was still having a blast ripping those.

The trails are all natural terrain, made up of soft black dirt (which reminds me of the north shore videos) that has tons of grip, with plenty of rocks and tech thrown in. There are some sections where they are sculpting the dirt into jumps and berms, but it is still primarily natural terrain.
There are several man made jumps, and some large ladder drops - a 6' and 12'that I saw, a 'road gap' and maybe 1 or 2 other features.

impressions:
I rode about half of the available trails, mostly what I would call intermediate to intermediate+, there is tougher techy steep stuff (like 'gnarnia') that I didnt get a chance to ride.

hard to describe in words, but the trails were very fast, had good flow, had bumps and rocks to challenge you but not enough to beat you up, some nice kickers and things to catch some air, and an occasional low natural berm.
my overall impression is that its a place that i want to spend some time on, even more so than snowshoe, where I feel like im either riding groomed jump trails or just trying to hang on while getting beaten up with a baseball bat.

there is a unique section at the top that stood out to me where they have a slalom set up. not like a dual slalom or giant slalom...like a ski slalom. maybe its just the racecar driver in me but it feels great to late apex some S curves. makes for good practice cornering and laying the bike over too.

here is a video of one of the trails, not my finest riding, but it gives you an idea. it is, of course, a steeper and techier than it looks in the video... but it is still probably the easiest trail that I rode
ill upload some more video later, including a couple guys hitting the ~6' ladder drop

elevation is 4300 feet with 1000 vert, so its more than wisp and 7 springs, and about 2/3 of western slope. they also do a good job of not wasting their elevation with access roads.
most of my runs lasted about 5 minutes, with a couple in the 7 minute range.

other stuff:
getting to cannan valley area is fast and easy. 2:45 if you arent pushing too hard, and 2:30 isnt out of the question if your name is delmar :p
when the next stage of the 'corridor' is done it should knock 20 minutes off of that.

the mountain drains well, I rode 36 hours after a day long deluge in the area, and the trails were mostly dry save for a few mud puddles.

if you would like to build/dig at timberline, JR is offering free lodging and riding while you dig. the guys I talked to who were doing that would dig about 4 hours a day before and after the lifts open and ride the rest of the day.

id like to go back to timberline later this month, if anyone is interested we can get a group together. I talked to JR and he said he would cut us a deal as a group.

Checked out timberline today largely in part to the review above and have to say I was very impressed. The place has it all, a good mix of technical DH and fast flowy jump trails. All the features were well built and it was truly a blast to ride, even in the pouring rain . You could probably spend the weekend here without getting bored and I will definitely be going back. I wish I had checked this place out sooner.

Evan: great videos!
That's a pretty good camera; HD and full screen gave it justice.
One of my favorite days riding - thanks!
