It's one of those things we never expected but are now hearing it's pretty common. That's too bad about your Demo too, Transcend.

Jeff Lenosky also got his brand new Saint/Fox equipped Glory stolen, when he was riding with his son. He walked in to go to the bathroom and came out to having no bike. Not cool.

I'm not sure if the increase in bike theft this year is due to a bad economic environment or a "perceived" increase due to increased reporting of stolen bikes, but either way at this point I'll pay the penalty to keep my rig in my room.

^Yup. F*** what the girl at the front desk says, the bike stays in my room. At the Tulluride race everyone else in our condo kept their bikes locked in the garage. There were 20 high end bikes sitting where no one would notice a thief at work with just a single cable and Masterlock keeping them in place. Mine stayed next to the couch.

There are only 2 roads in and out of Whistler. If it was a stolen car they would find it. Most bikes these days are worth as much as a cheap car...

This.. Last year we kept all five bikes in the room..I think it cost us almost four hundred in bull**** cleaning fees..Still just a fraction of what the bikes would cost to replace..Whistlers policy on stolen bikes is " sucks for you" .

Chopping up high end bikes and selling them is big business these days, leaving a bike un attended anywhere is a bad move..

Dudes be lurking around with flat brims and laser cutters..

we've had a couple of quiet years on the theft front, this year seems there's some highly organized **** going down. one evening a couple weeks ago in the subdivision that was the athlete's village, every single bike that was outside, locked or not, got stolen, including junky commuters and kids bikes worth next to nothing. sad times for a lot of people, I try and not leave mine out of sight and I put it away right away so prying eyes don't see it.

IF your summer business is based on people bringing their toys to your business, would you not do more to protect your business?

Setup a RFID locked storage room with the front desk required to take a picture of anyone entering or exiting the room. If you have pictures of everyone entering and exiting the room, it sure makes it a lot easier to identify people...

Also, is there no bike check-in around the village to store bikes?

Agree that the hotels need to do more to ensure safe storage of bikes in Whistler.

If and when we rent something in Whistler we only rent where we know the bikes can be safe inside.

re: bike check, I think one of them got ripped off a couple years ago.

I'm pretty paranoid about this kind of thing. Friend of mine had his nicked from the lockup when he was living in Alpenglow. Locks don't do much if a thief wants the bike.

Top floor balcony or inside your place is the only way. And a cheap beater for a pub bike.

that's the problem. if you've been to whistler you can see that mtb'ers account for a small proportion of their business. One month of the bike park makes the same as a day of ski lessons in the winter. There are throngs of tourists there to hang out and spend real money that they tend to cater more to. The bike business isn't that lucrative.

I kept my bike with a lock at all times during my visit to Whistler (even when eating hot dogs and keeping the bike closeby). We stayed in The Aspens condos and I kept my bike in the secure storage with 1 or two cable locks. The secure storage had electronic key linked to the room token entrance and a CCT camera pointing at the door. I thought it was decent security.

A friend of mine didn't trust the bike storage and he took it every day to WBP Rentals to store it (they charge $3 during the day and $7 for overnight). Here is the link: http://www.whistlerbike.com/rentals/valet/index.htm

If people are too cheap to do this then their bike should be stolen.
I think it's the best option next to keeping it in your room although I found the WBP Rentals "state of the art security system" a bit lame.

You take your bike, tell them you want to store it and they put a tag on it with your name and they give you a valet ticket. They put your bike next to the others (in plain sight) and when you want to take it you have to bring the valet ticket and/or an ID.

Are they liable and are the bikes in a secure location? That's all that matters.

never EVER use whistlers hotel "safe" storage areas in basements. My bike is ALWAYS in my room. Never let it out of my site EVER. Even hotels who do not "allow" them in a room you can sneak em up. We did, cleaned them off every day and never got charged for a cleaning fee.

Three of our bikes that were stolen earlier this year in Whistler, were recovered late August by Vancouver RCMP. I cannot thank them enough.

The question now is how to retrieve the bikes as we live in California. UPS can pick the bikes up from the RCMP offices but they need to be boxed first. The only thing I can think of doing is to call around to Vancouver bike shops, within reasonable distance of the bikes, to see if they could pick them up so that they could be boxed and shipped off.

I was hoping someone on here might have gone through a similar experience or might have a better solution.

Thanks

rockofullr- yea, we were both stoked and incredibly surprised but apparently Canadian police are pretty diligent and have been cracking down on theft rings. Our bikes were recovered with 20 others in a Vancouver house.

illnotsick- that would be more than I could ask for

Can you get supplemental insurance coverage for the bikes while you're in Whistler? I'd imagine renters/homeowners would cover it. But I'd think that if you knew you were going into a really high risk theft situation that if you could get a policy for sub $100 for a week or 2 it might be worth it. Anyone have experience with this?

big-ted- you're a good person. just sent you an email

gemini2k- Fortunately, my buddy's insurance covered all three of his bikes, and my insurance (Encompass) partially covered the loss. It would be rad if there was a way to buy coverage for a short period though.
