Schwalbe tire rubber compound change heads-up

Schwalbe has changed their rubber tire compound formula. Exhaustive research (or anyway exhausting) coupled with foiled (sorry that's field) testing by top riders has produced . . . something.

Heads up to all who are using this fine brand. I go through about ten Big betty's a year. It's my favorite high volume low weight tire. If you have to pedal up the mountain before you can blast down, the Big Betty is terrific.

I have used both the original triple nano and the gooey compounds for years. The triple was a harder more durable compound which hooked up well. This tire usually lasted me about 4 - 6 weeks depending on the miles. The gooey became road slicks quickly in this rocky terrain.

The new compounds come without explanations, but the "trailstar" wears faster then the old gooey tire. I even sheared off some knobs which never happened with the gooey compound. Unlike the old Tioga Fac. Dh tires, the missing Schwalbe knobs don't take away the casing too.

Also, I run my ties hard to avoid pinch flatting on all the rocky outcroppings here. But I had to add 5# more air to the tire to prevent pitch flats! I got three in as many days before I understood the problem. The center of the tire is apparently a softer rubber.

I emailed Schwalbe to find out what they had done. They recommend the "Pacestar" compound for those used to the Triple Nano.

I ordered 2 of these and will report back to confirm. At $60 each this can be an expensive mistake since I get about 2 weeks riding from the new trailstar compound.

I'll post this in freeride too.

If anyone is looking for a few Schwalbe Big Betty Trailstar road slicks - they're ready. ;)

Got several rides on my Betty rear and Mary front definently lasting longer than my Guey glueys did. Try laying of the brakes a bit and see what happens.
A trail Star rear is a bit harder and I haven't ripped a lug did seperate 1 but all good.
(My rear is a very star big betty)

The triple made a good rear tire but suffered from chatter and deflection on rocks even lowering psi still didn't comply. If you needed a tire on back to last quite a while that was the go to tire if you needed Max grip and traction the gg was the answer.
If you go through 10 a year regularly and they are triples as you say yu go to then I'd be curious to see how many brake pads you go through.
I have several hard rocky nasty rides on my very star Betty rear and although its showing signs of wear and hammering its outlasted my ggs from previous.

1 set of avid sintered a year in the rear. I ride 2-3000 miles a year these days. i used to get 3 - 4 weeks from a guey in the rear (wearing it well past it's prime). I just put a trailstar on the rear 2 weeks ago and it's almost a slick.

2-3k miles you should be running a harder rear compound to begin with in the back.

What PS I are you running, softer tires with high PSI and rider weight will rip lugs off as it has no cushion to fall back on just it sticking out there when grabbing a fist full of brake.

Not going to say they don't wear but I won't run a pace star for my kind of riding for yours yes its more am but dh fr I'll stay with softer compounds lower PSI.
Rocks of sedona is like riding a concrete bike path and the grip of a soft compound tire will be amazing especially off camber but will wear fast.

Sorry to hear they didn't work for you the new compounds are far better than last year for dh and fr though. Obviously not solid red rock and that purpose.

Hopefully the pacestar works better I know it hooks in a bit better than tripples did so it may be the perfect choice for sandpaper sedona. Lol scored tires there on the old jeep tour roadsin my jeep.

I would probably like Schwalbe tires a lot more if the dude posting above me didn't spam them so much.

I can attest to the abuse travis puts these tires through. That is a big dude with no business going so effin fast. Those new compounds seem to be holding up surprisingly well. Cant wait to try a set.

blacky, you should try the Conti Trail King 2.4s. I bet you'd go through 3 per year instead of 10 judging from my experience with Big Betty GGCs.

honestly my issue is that BC sounds and acts like someone who does not give 2 ****s about what he is doing or what he is saying (for what ever reason...are you drunk always (I am OK with that, and it would explain a lot)?)...and at the same time HAS to get his 2 cents in on EVERY SINGLE post/thought/opinion/etc (when he is not selling all of his bikes, not riding, and moving cross-country)

That post above, like almost every other one is un-readable; with grade school level grammar, sentence structure, and spelling.

I cannot imagine anyone would give any merit to anything BC posts (see 'Bad Sellers lis't if needed)...

Maybe BC is just a BOT????

There are others here that are just as bad...or worse that is for sure...

thanks for the tip dave. i'll check those out. i wouldn't mind saving $350 + a year.

this page has the specs for that tire, but i'm confused:

http://www.conti-online.com/generator/www/de/en/continental/bicycle/themes/mtb/downhill_freeride/rubberqueeneng/rubber_queen_en.html

i'm guessing the 1050 gram tire is steel bead? but what about the other 2 at 950 and 820 grams? what's the difference? they have only one (hardish) rubber compound? info is scarce.

They have a UST version that is 1050g, the regular version is 820... you want the ones with the black chili rubber compound, I think the 950g tire is a harder compound, probably a cheaper version. I agree the website is confusing. I think the black chili rubber is by far the best out there for a trail tire, it grips well and lasts a long time. The TK/RQ tread pattern works well in a really wide variety of conditions and rolls pretty fast too.

thank you. are the sidewalls decent? you can't run kenda's nevegal here because the walls are very thin and the rocks so unkind.

you're up pretty late.

Yeah, Kendas suck. The sidewalls on the 2.4 RQs are pretty good but the 2.2s are too light.

I got back from a trail ride just before midnight last night... :D

For pedaling and wear you should be happy with the pace star. Of its a bit chatter drop a little PS I on them schwalbes have a sweet spot. For climbing air up for for off cambers and descents try to let out a little and see how it works.
