Is some jackass really torturing an octopus on camera? And why does it piss me off?
he's probably about to eat it alive. its pretty common to eat them alive in some parts of Asia. they twirly them around chopsticks and drain the water out of them to help swallow them without too much resistance.
Yeah, that one bothered the crap out of me. I know they eat a lot of seafood when it's still alive - I just could never do it. It bugs me to even watch.
Cephalopods are often pretty smart, I think that's a big part of why it troubles me.
Some people claim its dead, but they only cut part of its CNS/brain off. If it was cut lower it would be more like a chicken with its head cut off + sodium (soy sauce) to induce muscle contractions (on exposed muscle tissues). Its questionable at best - looks like chef favored extra movement over being humane. Stress hormones can make food taste bad too.
This is how is properly done (notice the skin is removed so the salt can readily induce contractions on the muscle tissue. and its not immediate like the squid which is likely alive):
