Hey guys, I am looking at ordering a light DH worthy wheelset from CRC, using the following:

- Hope Pro 2 Evo Hubs
- DT 2.0/1.8mm Spokes
- Prolock Nipples

Ideally I want them to be as light at possible (around 1900g), but sturdy enough for everyday type riding (and some racing). I'm 67kg/148lbs and don't consider myself too hard on gear. I currently run a stock MTX33/Ringle combo which are bombproof (minus a couple of flatspots).

I was thinking of using either 721's or DT 600's (both around the 580-600g mark), however have been spotting at lot of EX500's (roughly 150g less for the pair) being specced on bikes lately.

So,

Are these rims capable of real DH conditions?

What sort of dent resistance do they have?

Am I going too overboard on the figures? Should I just settle for the proven rims?

Thanks,
JA666

I ran them on my DH bike for a while. The front is still going strong. I assploded the rear casing a road gap. I'm a little heavier than you. Don't do anything like that and they'll probably be fine.

Can't speak for the Fr 500s but the Fr 600s are amazing. MTXs will dent like butter in comparison. I'm about to re lace a new one on the rear due to finishing a few too many races with a flat.

go with DT front and 721 rear, in my experience the mavic has a bit harder wals so it doesnt dent that often

Stans ZTR front (if possible) mavic xm or en521 rear - only because it is cheap so you can replace it often. The other idea would be to wait for that E13 scandium rim and if it is stiff enough lace it with dt revolution.

I've got a couple of sets, to be fair the EX500 is a hell of a lot tougher than my old set of 5.1's.

It's lasted just as long as the 721's before it. My only issue is they arn't as easy to get tyres on & off.

I wouldn't consider Flow's, because although cheap on a Hope Hoops deal, they replacement rims are hideously expensive on their own. I can get the EX500's for half the price. To be fair i'm still running the original rims as well after 12 months. The rear had it's first true last month & I pulled about 3 or 4 dings out of it at the same time.

No complaints really for the weight :)

Whatever rim you choose, you'll get away with lighter upfront. Softer metal will dent and roll on, harder will break spokes or itself. DT's are OK if softer, Mavic too. I've seen both explode or hold the abuse, depends on weight, riding style and... luck too :thumb:
