:(

I have a raw superco dirt jump bike. Recently it has started rusting, INSIDE the clearcoat-its not much, just little doghair looking lines, pretty small, but i can see that its starting in other places too...

The frame is 99% perfect with no scratches in the clearcoat, so i cannot figure out why/how its rusting. I always dry it when/if i gets wet, but i have no idea how to stop this short of sanding off the clear-which i wont do..

help :(

I wonder if a sacrificial anode would help with this. I'd try bolting a zinc washer somewhere to the bike where good electrical contact could be made. You can make a zinc washer by sanding the thin copper coating off of a new penny and drilling a hole.

Only works if water droplet is touching steel and zinc at the same time.

Can we get a pic of the rust? That sounds cool looking.

Hmm so that is what happens under the paint? Interesting.

From Doc: "This is exactly why I resisted so long on the clearcoat frames.
High performance steel is very flexible and resilient; the stiff plastic clearcoat gets micro cracks all over the place, letting moisture under it.
The rust spider veins will occur much faster if you live in more humid areas and store the bike NOT in your climate controlled living space (ie: garage, shed, on the lawn, hanging in a tree).

Structural integrity will not be compromised for many many years, when an entire tube junction is rusted like a boat anchor and the clearcoat is bubbling off.

If you’re worried, get a can of J.P. Weigle’s Frame Saver. Spray it inside of all the tubing, following the directions on the can. It’s a brown wax that stops rust from the inside of the frame outwards.

As for the rust already under the clearcoat: there is no stopping it without stripping the paint and refinishing (which will also remove the weld color). NEVER sand the paint off a frame!!!!! Use a chemical paint stripper like Klean-Strip Paint Stripper.

It is possible that only a powdercoat type clearcoat has this cracking issue. Maybe wet paint clears are flexible enough not to get the rust spiders."

Justin, you're always welcomed and encouraged to contact Superco directly with any questions about your frame.
