Full carbon clinchers as training wheels

Not sure why but I have wanted full carbon clinchers for training wheels and keep the carbon tubulars for races. Mainly because I don't want to tape and glue any more than I have to.

I ended up picking up a set of new Reynolds Attack carbon clinchers from the guys at the Reynolds booth during Interbike. I have gotten a few rides on them so far and I love them. I have yet to have any brake squeal with the supplied Reynolds carbon pads after I chamfered the leading edge and with feathering, they feel great.

Anyone else running full carbon clinchers this year and have any comments about what I should be looking for as well as any extra maintenance on them?

Obligatory bike pics tomorrow. They look great too!

I bought 404 tubies for race wheels this year, and retired my Spinergy FCC(full carbon clinchers) to training wheels on my race bike. I did purely because I am lazy, and I don't want to change my brake pads every time I go racing. I also use them on for crit races on my rain bike too. I have zero issues with running them as training wheels. I probably put close to 5k miles on them this year. They have required zero maintenance, not even a truing, or a hub service. I use only Swiss Stop Yellow brake pads on my carbon wheels. :thumb:

I am thinking about picking up some swiss pads instead.

I'm running EC90 SL 38s right now. With SS Yellow Flash pads. They ride nice, but I can't stop for sh*t. The wheels are nice though.
When someone has poor luck with Swiss Stops, I recommend Zipp Tangente cork pads. I don't know why, but when yellows don't work, the Tangentes seem to. I've heard good reviews about the black Zipp carbon pads, as well. Never tried them, though. Zipp has a new pad coming out that is supposed to be the **** of all ****s. It's silver, and made by Swiss Stop.

To be completely fair, I'm used to alloy rims, so it's not a real issue. The real issue is I nearly smoked a police car from behind at a stop light.

Honestly...Bontrager cork has worked the best for me. SS work fine. The Zipp blacks are just like any Kool Stop I have used. I hate that they cost as much as they do though.

Don't. The new Reynolds "CryoBlue" pads are the best pads on the market, better than the Yellow SwissStops. Reynolds even says you "have" to use their pads on the rims, but in reality you can run the yellows too. But honestly, having ridden their rims with different pads, the blues are so much better than anything on the market...

I've been riding a set of 45mm Edge clinchers for a couple of years now with no problems whatsoever. I use the Swiss Stop pads. They are fine most of the time, but pretty scary once they heat up on long descents. And I have to brake way early if it's wet.

My only real concern is the increased sidewall wear from everyday use. I suspect the sidewalls will have problems before anything else. No problems yet, just a guess based on fundamentals of multi-ply carbon construction.

With that said, I don't really "train", and I definitely don't race my road bike - these are just the wheels I ride when I ride my road bike.

I like braking down hills way too much to ride carbon rims everyday...though I probably couldn't afford to even if I wanted them.

Inside pic. Still having too much fun to get it outside for a pic or two. Maybe tomorrow as 255 miles in 2 days is putting me on the couch most of the day tomorrow.
