I'm shopping around for my first 29er hardtail and I'm looking for one that can be converted to single speed as well as geared. I haven't gotten the SS itch yet but I know it will hit one day and I figure I should be prepared. Can anyone suggest some frames to check out? This will be my primary rig that will get raced and railed. I'm usually around a 19" frame (on 26s), 5'11" w/31" inseam if anyone cares.

The Trek (Gary Fisher) Rig is a good option for an easily convertible frame. Niner makes some good options too. Black Cat makes sweet custom frames, I have Todd's drop outs on a custom frame that a local builder is finishing up for me.

I ride a Redline Monocog Flight and it can be easily converted as well.

There is the Soul Cycles Dillinger and the New Vassago Chupacabara which has three different changable drop out plates. One for Single Speed, one for running a 100mm fork and one for running a 120mm fork. Oh and the Vassago Optimus Ti will let you go single or geared.

I've read that a lot of people don't care much for the Jabberwockys long chainstays..
The Nimble9 seems very popular..
I've also read many good thing about Kona Unit/El Mariachi/Misfit Dissent
Waltworks is very nice but pricey...

I know tons of folks love the Monocogs, but they are a bit heavier than other bikes..
Having said that, they seem to be a great great deal for $500ish..
