I'm on the market for a 2012 Bike. My problem is the 2 bikes i like most have a carbon "something" on it...

2012 V10
Carbon Front

2012 Wilson
Carbon Rear....

My question is this... Is Carbon a good idea for a Hack like me???? i don't do 10 foot drops to flat... but am wondering if a partial carbon DH bike would be a good idea for a non racer like me...

Thanks Guys.. Have a good week!

PS:
This is NOT an V10 Vs. Wilson thread, lets not compare bikes please.... just asking about the carbon part... lol

Otherwise it should be possible to get the Wilson with alu chainstays like they did them on the 2011 Wilson. But yeah, I don't think they'll break.

i'm the owner of the v10carbon at diablo that you talked to on saturday.

i do race, but i am most definitely a hack. :D i have no issues with the durability/strength of carbon frames for downhill. in nearly all instances, they've been tested to death during development, that their durability/strength is comparable or exceeds that of an aluminum counterpart. it's likely that if you do crash and destroy a carbon frame, that you would have destroyed an aluminum frame as well. the only difference may be the cost of a crash replacement. lets say you crack a front carbon triangle, the crash replacement cost will be higher than an aluminum equivalent. so from a pure financial consideration, that may be enough to opt for an aluminum frame instead.

i like what santa cruz has done, going with the carbon front and aluminum rear triangle. when you crash, it's likely that the rear triangle will take the initial impact, since it's the widest part of the frame. and if you do trash the rear triangle, it'll cost less to replace because its made from aluminum.

devinci has gone the reverse, their rear triangle is carbon. and if my reasoning is sound, it'll cost more to replace that rear triangle in a crash. they may have taken that into consideration, as that rear carbon swingarm looks super beefy.

and if you notice on the full carbon session 88, they've added their "carbon armor" to the seatstays on the rear linkage, which is basically the widest part of the frame.

Get something else, there are like a million Aluminium Frames out there and I can't believe that you only like those two.

I don't get it. What does racing or not racing have to do with whether a carbon bike is ok for you?
LOL.... it was just a question...

i've only see one guy riding a carbon bike and it was this past weekend....... hence the reason why i thought the carbon would be better off for racers....

I don't know.... Have you ever seen a horse's face when a fat person is riding him? It is a combination look of anger, resentment and a good helping of smugness.
This is the way your carbon race bike will look at you everytime you get your non competitive ass on its saddle. You should look elsewhere.

Ha, get whatever in the hell you want man!

You remember Noah and Shane those 2 kids that rode diablo literally every day training. they were from michigan and alabama. both had carbon v10s hit every jump and drop possible. crashed a few time. couldnt damage the bikes. my 2 sence is that carbon isnt breaking unless you seriously slam a rock really hard

I don't understand you guys saying he should look at other bikes...

I don't know about the Devinci, but the V10 Carbon is proved to be stiffer and able to take bigger hits, at least in the test labs. For 2012 they're coming with a carbon rear end as well, the main reason they didn't do it for 2011 was that they didn't have the technology to make it significantly lighter and just as strong/stiff as the alu one. Reliability would be the last thing I would worry about with a carbon bike, the price tag on the other hand...

maybe i don't want any of those "million" aluminum frames out there?
That's why you went with 2 frames that have strong marketing and world cup presence? ;)

If you don't want an alu frame why the hell do you ask us if Carbon is ok? Many people trash around on carbon v10s with no problems. A good friend of mine is the hackiest of hacks. He tends to not come back from whips and have strange crashes and his v10c is fine.

Does anyone have the pricing of the Wilson Carbon vs the full alu Wilson (frame sets)?

Comparing the 2011 vs the 2012 carbon frame set pricing on Freeborn.uk shows nearly a 25% price increase for the carbon seatstay alone.

Liar. Carbon will break just looking at it.
I read it on the interwebz so it has to be true.

Naah now the carbon has tested the rock bajesus out of it so it's better than watching fetish porno where hot chicks covered in judy butter reshim your forks.

I don't race and would have a Session 9.9 on order if I had the cash to spend. Since I don't I'm fine with my older alum Session 88. Just comes down to your financial situation...
