Whats the DL on these cranks. Are they a compromise to get a bikes weight down or are they legit? I haven't noticed if the top SRAM riders were using them last year or not. That usualy is a good indication that a carbon part is truly DH worthy and reliable. They come in at a good 300 grams less then Saints but can they take a beating. My new bike for next year comes spec'd with them, but if they aren't reliable I'll toss them for Saints.

cheers

shimano cranks> sram cranks.
always has been the case. There is a reason why shimano still uses alluminum alloys for their Duraace cranks over the competeitors

Pretty much espec at this point, no one outside sposored riders have much time on them yet. Time will tell if they are durable.

I dont remember where i found the information at, but shimano cranks have always been much stiffer than their competitors. Also, with the rate ive seen carbon frames fail im staying away from carbon for a long time. IMO carbon is a bad idea for a dh crank, look at the bottom of your crank arms where the pedal attaches. mine are fvcked up, wouldnt want carbon for that.

I just got my new 2012 Demo 8 II today and it comes with X.0 carbon cranks...
It kind of concerns me because I'm a big guy, >220 lb.

My relief is that I don't believe Specialized would offer their bike frames with lifetime warranty and with components not as reliable...

lifetime warranty only applies to frame, not the stuff on the frame, and only for manufacturing defects. Also, since they are specing all of their new bikes with sram it makes a lot of sense for them to use sram cranks as well. they are super cheap at mass oem prices

*disclosure - I am sponsored by SRAM

I have had the 170mm carbon XO dh crank on my Santa Cruz carbon v10 since July. I am 215# and ride mostly in very rocky/chundery terrain with lots of loose sh*t always flying up hitting the bike. I have found these cranks to be awesome in terms of stiffness and durability. I'm not smooth and like going straight where I should probably be navigating around stuff. Call me lazy. I have had no issues at all with this crank and would highly recommend it for anyone looking for a new dh crank.

More telling however, would be the carbon XO xc cranks I've had on my xc bike since last year. They have been shown the rough way around the trails out here, bashed on innumerable rocks, and are still performing flawlessly. Trust me, they're tough enough.

Feel free to PM with questions.

The guys at Sol Vista (^) have been bashing on them for most of the season. I'd love to test them out.

I can't seem to remember but I believe they have plastic covers on the end of the crank arms. Or are those on the new Race Face?

do the X0 cranks use the same plastic "bushing" between the bearing and spindle on the drive side that the descendants use? mine started creaking after a month or so of not that hard riding, and when i took apart the cranks the interface made me a sad panda. a lot of grease seems to have made it quiet for now, but i hope it doesn't turn into one of those "i grease my cranks every month" things...

and professional racer's opinions dont mean much to me on products. im sure everything they have is "the best."
FWIW, if I didn't like them, I simply wouldn't reply to the thread. It's not like I get a commission on sales figures or anything. Would it help my cred with you if I disclosed that I found the Descendants to be too flexy for my robust figure?

Dave the carbon bits don't worry me much, really the only thing that I feel is a issue with these cranks is the peadal inserts are alunimum not steel. that seems like a weekness in my opionion, espically as I don't suspect one can helicoil a carbon crank when {if} the pedal inserts rip out.

mind you I'd still give them a try.

If its 7000 series aluminum it should be OK. That **** is HARD!

Saints and the XTR cranks are made of Duralumin
Via sicklines
Saint Cranks (FC-M815) Shimano not only made these new cranks lighter, but stronger. If there’s one thing Shimano has typically done well it’s been their cranks and these Saint cranks deliver. They have used Duralumin (Hollowtech II) that was previously only used on XTR/Dura Ace cranks. Shimano claims these are twice as stiff as XT’s

XTR 960 had the better interface method but stupid spider/BCD. XTR 970 has the better BCD but stupid interface.

I agree, threading AL can cause to issues compared to good old steel. Also I'd be more concerned with how they bond that insert to the carbon.

For sure, the BCD on the 970 is one of the reasons i love them...that new BCD is trash until more companies make rings to accomodate.

I'm sure those XO cranks are great and will hold up fine...For me aluminum is pretty damn solid though.
