I recnently palced an order on a 2012 Demo 8 I, the bike is comming with a Van RC and Boxxer RC. If I'm not happy with the boxxer I'll toss a avy cart in it but am wondering about how much preformance I'll be able to get out of the stock rear shock.

I'm comming off of a 2010 Corsair Maelstrom with a Roco WC and 07 888ATA (par removed) so that will be my benchmark to go on when the new bike gets in.

For those who've put time on the 2011 Demo's how does the VAN RC compare to other shocks? I like the Roco I have now, and had a vivid in the past that treaded me well. I never really liked the DHX shocks I had years ago, found them hard to tune and a bit harsh.

Is it worth looking for a different shock right away or will I be happy with the Van for a while?

Thanks

You'll be able to back to back compare yours to a 2012 demo 8 II with a CCDB. That should tell ya whether its worth it or not. Some guys have said the Vivid air feels great on the demo.

Rode and raced this season on my 011 Demo I with the stock Van RC. Once I had the proper spring fitted I was pretty happy with the performance of the stock shock.

Coming off an RC4 I was expecting to miss being able to adjust the bottom out but never really had an issue or the need to make that adjustment. 4 clicks of LSC and fairly fast rebound seem to be the setup everyone on our team ran on the Van RC this year. Not one complaint from any of us. Overall unless you are very picky about your rear suspension I think you will find it works great to set it and forget it.

I talked to Marz, the Roco will not fit. The reservoir hits the frame. A Manitou Revox will fit, but you have to machine the yoke, most won't be comfortable with that. The Vivid needs a different yoke or something, I don't run one so not sure. That leaves you with a Fox and the CC.

I had the RC4 on mine and switched to a Revox. I really can't tell that much of a difference other than the Revox is a bit smoother on rebound and the adjustments are tool free.

I'd leave the Van on there initially.

The vivid coil only needs one minute of fileing on the shock eyelet, its a really simple thing really its just to square of the vivids round profile. I have both a vivid coil and air, between them a pushed air is super nice but the reliability of it is subpair. But the coil is still a solid performer, especially for its price.

Do you have a pushed vivid air?

I have spent time on both the rc4 and the van rc. While i am not the biggest suspension guru, i thought that the van RC was fine, the only issue i had, was that i blew threw the travel a bit more, that said, i didnt spend much time playing with it. I found that the bike was very capable out of the box, i was more displeased with the fork compared to the rear shock.

Yes and No, it was TF who did the work. But the work they did made it a fair bit better, i got them to increase the mid to high speed comp and decrease the effect of each click on the comp adjuster. It probably wont make me a wc racer but even for me the improvement was quite noticeable.

I've ridden a Vivid Coil, Vivid Air, CCDB and Fox RC4 on my demos over the last 18 months. For me, it's a toss up between the RC4 and the Vivid Coil. I really liked how the vivid coil felt and ran it until it got stolen. I went back to an RC4 due to stock issues at SRAM (new frame) and it actually feels really good running the compression damping wide open, with a slightly heavier spring (as per the Spec. engineer's recommendation.) This may also explain why I wasn't a fan of the ccdb, it felt extremely overdamped no matter what I tried. I wasn't a fan of the air shock, but pretty sure that was a personal preference thing.

Double Barrel all the way. The Rc4, van rc, vivid, and vivid air couldn't keep up in the fast breaking bumps. The recommended settings from Malcolm were spot on and I haven't messed with the settings since.
