Pegboy and Fool, you don't get it

I think you are making some pretty uninformed assumptions here.

"And unless you inside folks know otherwise, it's not saying anything about broadcasting WC races live the way we've all grown to love over the past few years with Freecaster. That sucks. "

For one, this is not a press release regarding RB's agreements with the UCI that have been alluded too (and not made public yet).

This is simply a communication from RB and NBC that they have an agreement to showcase a handful of Red Bull event properties, one of which is Rampage.

This is not even scratching the surface of the media reach RB has to showcase other sports, athletes, etc. It is simply another piece of the ever growing equation.

Red Bull Media has aligned themselves with a mainstream media partner
this is the only thing this press release is about....Be glad MTB is part of it.

don't confuse this and investing in the UCI WC series as a partner to broadcast their event live and on line. The two could not be more unrelated.

this is simply an FYI saying "hey look what else that company supporting the world cup is doing"

cheers

have a look around here to see what else they are up to

Towing the party line.
What it comes down to, is that TV brings in sponsor dollars. Internet broadcasts are cool for fans, but they do close to nothing at all for the financial viability of big teams. For that, you need mainstream TV coverage. Big time advertising is slow to catch on to new technologies. It will be awhile before a captive, niche market of fans means anything at all to a mainstream advertiser. 35 minutes on air on an NBC owned network however, could be potentially huge.

no worries.

I can see where one might read it the wrong way since the press release was posted in this thread.

Sorry given the choice I would ride a DH bike down any RACE COURSE over getting on a 2K PBR animal. I am not arguing sport vs sport just safety. It goes bad fast. I have seen bulls kick through RAIL-ROAD ties. So it is different. But saying it isn't a sport is off base. Different but we all wish there was the $$$ in DH as there is in Rodeo.
Off topic but I was at one of the biggest rodeos in the country this summer and walking past the staging areas my first thought was, 'this looks a lot like DH racing.' Not in terms of the sport itself but in that a small number of guys make a good living and dozens upon dozens beat the piss out of their bodies at their own expense hoping to make it. For some it's the only life they know.

^ This

I know a former female downhill racer, around in the glory days, was not a missy glove or ACC, and still made $250k + a year racing...I am going out on a limb and say this happened because the sport was on TV and everyone wanted a piece of that, even piece of the girls class.

TV is still valid.

I'm a recovered redneck so I know what bulls can do. I didn't mean to my imply that it isn't a sport, but when 75% of a sports channels coverage is bull riding, they should call it a bull riding network and not a sports network.

True yeah I dont watch TV anymore. Its now the Bob The Builder, Fire Man Sam etc. at my home. Yeah it gets repetitive the same stuff all the time. Also true that the TV coverage brings the income but large sponsors like Bud, Coors, Chevy and Ford are laying out also because of the TV coverage. The winner this year got $1MILL at the finals in Vegas.

It's a vicious circle!:shout:

And I thought the $300k that was won at that NY Surf comp was big. These things are usually fueled by the industry/sales/what the fans are buying...so what are we talking in Bull riding as being the products involved? wranglers? Chaps? Hats? (I'm being 100% serious and curious, I know F all about bullriding)

Also the bull producers drop coin. A bull like Bodacious earned anywhere from $500-$1500 per "SAMPLE" breeding purposes. If I recall those numbers make up about 1/3 of what is "taken" each time. They can easily do that once a day. So the breeders spend coin, US TOBACCO used to be a major sponsor, Whiskey Companies.... Damn maybe we need Makers Mark and Skoal sponsoring the US race scenes?

Stick; What, did you bump your head?! Wranglers: yes, Hats: yes, Chaps:yes but most importantly---BEER! Fans, riders, they're all drunk! That's where Yee Haa came from..the inablility to form any recognizable form of speech.

In reality, I suppose the fact that you have clothing (Boots, jeans, Carhart stuff etc.), Alchohol and the automotive (trucks) industry involved, lends to some pretty big sponsor dollars.

I say F*ck Dual Slalom and 4X! The weekend should consist of one DH race run followed by one full round of bull riding under the lights! Imagine the cross sections of spectators that would draw in..

Edit: Good one IJ, add tobacco to the mix and all that is left would be Smith and Wesson!

Thanks for the insights guys...
Only thing I know about bull riding, is when I went to mammoth motocross to promote our new 'TLD Premium Protection' chest protection, all the mini kids were running bull riding vests!, but by weekends end, I had the good bulk of kids in proper vests:

Livin it up in the O.C.
Maybe Poker coverage gets a lot of advertisers bc they know/assume that poker players must have money they can part with. ;)
