I'm useless, so help me pick a fork

Going to build a new bike for 2012. I need a fork to go on the front end of my new 2012 Yeti 303WCDH frame I just ordered.

About me:
- I am a large man who enjoys long walks to frozen yogurt stands. Something around 230#, or 16.42 stone for those of you in places that measure like that.
- I don't really "hop over" things or "pick smooth lines." My riding style could be compared to a monster truck with a powerful need for the beer at the bottom of his run.
- I ride all over the US, from down here in beautiful hot Phoenix, up to Whistler, out to the east coast for some rocks and roots.
- I'd rather not have to rip it down and rebuilt it several times in a season.

Cost isn't an issue. Its been a good fiscal year, so I have some cash tucked away. I would like to get 4 years out of this fork.

I just came off of an 888WC from 2007, complete with the nickle stanchions. I loved that fork, but over the 4 years I had ridden it like a hobby horse that owed me money.

Any suggestion with justification is welcome.

I kind of like how my D cups look as I come jiggling down the trail. Like a hairy, brunette, fat Pam Anderson with a wiener.

so stoked on that thing. the evo cart is every bit as nice as a avy cart (having owned both).

I'm thinking the 888 sounds like a good plan.

So where does one find the replacement spring in Ti for the fat man?

Two years on a 888 EVO. Awesome. No bushing slop. Rides high in its travel. Feels like vaseline. Uses every inch of travel without bottoming out harsh. Happened only two times in two years. Serviced it once. Felt always like new (broken in).

So your options are: 888 evo Ti V2 2012 or a 888 evo Ti with some Ava magic.

For the fat man spring call Marzocchi. I think they have one or two of them.

18 months didn't service it once finally did and it was still going strong, air side felt a little more plush after finally servicing it but all solid.
I think for a stiffer chasis and seals the 888 would suit you.

I just dumped my fox 36 180 talas and slappd my totem/avy cart back on and love the feel.
Do you wash your bike after every ride? The air side in mine lost 5mm of travel due to dust after 1 season. I have to say conditions were super dusty but I didnt ride that much and from what I remember you dont live in a rainforest either. Not that it bothers me very much. Still better performance and service intervals than a regular boxxer and with a slight weight drop and a chunked crown it is around 2710g with stem so Im not going to change it fast ;)

Firstly I ride WC boxers and think they are a pile of ****, for the most part anyway and wouldn't be up for consideration of I had my time over. imo you are looking at two forks. 1: as everyone else said 888 and 2: price isn't a concern, BOS. Both from my experience are fantastic forks, both have a very long service life and should last a season without a service, strong dependable forks you can't go wrong with. If you have a local dependable BOS dealer, that would be my choice.

Do you have like oil in yours? Helps them a lot ;) Imho if you know what you are doing they are better than what most people say about them. They just are not as good from the get go as 888s or 40s.

As for BOS - they have horrible CS so unless you have a good dealer stay away.

Skip the boxxers...did not like either of the latter two I had, though the 2008 seemed better than either the 2010 or 2011 RC2Cs. Too high maintenance interval and too expensive for what they are.

I'd look straight at the 888, in evo RC3 format. Skip the ti; tapered stanchions and expensive ti springs aren't necessary for a rec rider, IMO. I don't have a lot of riding time on other forks, but the 2012 RC3 sounds like they got the bugs figured out, and long service intervals combined with great seals and bushings and a solid, reliable damper make me happy. You could do the Boxxer/Avy route, but then you end up with crap seals on a decent chassis and a damper that may or may not work 100% due to casting issues from Rockshox.

Or you could be weird and get a White Brothers Groove 200.

there is no service center here in the states so buying a BOS is taking a big chance

didnt the non-ti version move to tapered stanchions last year too?

Not long enough
Don't get a fox. We've got too many rocks and boulders around here. Those things are known to split open like a beer can at target practice in Apache Junction. That being said, the Dorado is amazing, their customer service is awesome and I think they still have 2 free rebuilds in the first 2 years.

honestly you'd know better than I, but I thought half the reason to buy a Ti was the nickel tapered stanchions, and the other was the ti spring. I understood them to be identical besides that.

The regular 888 is a retarded deal compared to other manufacturers too.

just checked their site and the Evo v2 does have the tapered stanchions but in hard anno, not nickel like the Ti version...and it obviously doesnt have the Ti spring or Ti hardware...making the Evo v2 a great deal

yeah, the price difference is not what I thought it was. I remember seeing the 888rc3 for $650 wholesale...that's a deal.

Well that was easy. Always been an 888 boy when it came to my DH sleds. Why change in my old age, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

What's the difference between the 888 RC3 EVO V.2 and the 888 RCV?

Some changes to the rebound piston, and I know the upper crown is 4-bolt boxxer standard instead of marzocchi. There was talk of the rebound getting a shimstack, but I'm not sure whether it changed from a ported or if it just got an upgrade.

hmm, i thought someone said it really wasnt a shimmed rebound. good news when i send mine out for the new setup
you should be able to put the cartridge in any 38mm 888 too
