Good Luck! This is my 4th company in 4 years and 6th company since graduating in 1998. I would agree that if you still have the job then stay put! I'm also an architect and after my layoff in March last year I thought about changing careers but after 3 months I found a job in a crappy firm and left after 11 months to join the firm I'm with now. Hoping to stay here for awhile but who knows.

My husband is in the construction business too (PM for a site construction co.) and just changed jobs after the company he'd been with for 11 years shut down his office and expected him to move to the main office 2.5 hours away.

After thinking about a career change what I found was that my skill set and knowledge only seemed to transfer to other construction related fields which were all doing poorly!

Yeah that's what I'm finding but the thing is all the big construction firms we've been working with are doing well, paying out bonuses, promotions etc......
That sucks about your husband losing his job after 11yrs. I've been here 8yrs.

Switching professions under your circumstances would be a fool's game. You have managed to hang on during a really bad down cycle, which leaves you well positioned on the inevitable upswing. Stick with it.
I agree with JBP. A few years back, I took a big paycut (almost $15k on paper but in reality, my commuting costs were cut drastically as was child care, etc. so it was really less than $6k) but my quality of life is much better and though my job here isn't the most secure with all of the cuts and the new 2% tax cap, I
am happy to have a job and we're definitely able to make ends meet . I'd keep your eyes open and resume up to date. Take whatever training opportunities arisse to keep yourself marketable, but "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" would be my motto as well.

If you can afford it, go back to school to boost or diversify your skills. I'm wrapping up my 'MBA lite' (actually MS in Org Management - which at this college is an MBA minus the stats classes). If nothing else, it will help me to potentially retain my job with impending cuts (Medicaid in NYS).

I got paid to work on bikes today. It was nice. I'm really good at it. I enjoy it. I just wish it paid enough to live off of. I don't mind that bike biz is now the phone biz. I worked 5 hours and spent 2 of them on the phone chasing parts and favors. I want to work for Cane Creek. Those folks are so happy to serve you. Sram not so much....

I landed a job with TDAmeritrade 9 months ago as their logistics specialist. I ended up hearing that they were goin to be goin through some "restructuring" so I applied for something to fall back on just in case I got let go. I ended up landing a job workin for ATK (all divisions) as one of their production control support guys. It's pretty much like an inventory specialist position. I don't get paid much, but i'm pretty stoked. The drive to TDAmeritrade was 45 minutes one way. ATK is less than 3 minutes from home. I know they've had a lot of layoffs, but then again, it seems like a lot of places are having them. THey said that if i was working for one specific side of ATK, then it would be an issue. I'm hoping they're right.

I graduated 1.5 years ago with a degree in Geography and a concentration in GIS, did an internship building trails then started working with one of the top trailbuilding companies in the country. Now I do a mix of work for them as well as independent contract work under my own name. It can be done! Sometimes you just have to invent your own job...

Did you leave the old firm, or just looking to do this on the side? I moved to Germany last February and got a job at a cool office here, but it pays.... well, I am a slave. A lot of my friends that I graduated high school with are buying houses, new cars, having babies, and everyone that I meet in Germany that's in their mid-20's still live with roommates in a cheap flat.

Really?
When I was looking at work in Baden-Württemberg I was surprised at how well payed jobs were.
Lower cost of living and on average 30-40% more pay than here in NZ.
Still a but gutted I didn't quite qualify for German residency.

I'm living in Stuttgart (BW). It may just depend on what kind of job you are looking for. The house that I am designing here is a solid 5 million Euros and I see more exotic cars per day in this city than I did for the first 25 years of my life, but I can almost guarantee that none of those belong to any architects or designers... well, except for my boss. He comes by Porsche, all of us employees come by bike.

I'm still here actually. I love it here but my pay has been froze for 4 years and on a week to week basis I'm not sure if my paychecks will be on time or paid at all. Take today for instance, I didn't get paid yesterday my usual auto-deposit pay day and I was told at the end of the day after 3 bills were withdrawn that I would be getting a paper check at some point today.

Also in Stuttgart...the cost of living here is nuckin futs, and the $$ is huge. My neighbors all have Porsches and Mercedes, even a Lambo. I get mean mugged when I drive by in my Subaru all the time (...then I crank up some old Clash to make them uncomfortable.).

I will be on the hunt for a cool job in 2 years, 10 months and 7 days. Not that I am counting...
Going to find something almost completely opposite of what I have been doing for the past 20 years.
?????? we still gota hook up sometime. I gotta find a free day somewhere, family and job keep me hopping. Been kinda crazy the past week.

What do you have to lose? Your current job sounds like a slow death.

One tip: find out about your new field/job, figure out the 'soft skills' needed and practice some behavioral interviewing techniques (ie, "Tell me about how you in your past job how you handled conflict management/resolution with other employees").

How are the bene's?
Killer!
My problem right now is we're being run dry. My wife is a teacher so our bene's are good but we aren't making enough $.
My single main primary only reason for looking for another job right now is for more green. My pay dropped 4 yrs ago, the business I work for stopped contributing to retirement, no bonuses, no OT etc... etc... now I have one kid in school, one in daycare, so my costs obviously keep going up.

I love my job but they've been having trouble paying on time. Also there are a number of reason I don't see myself getting a raise for at least a year and maybe even longer. So.... I'm trying to make a lateral pay move right now knowing that I'll be getting a raise quickly with my certification and better bene's and working less time.

Is the firm doing any great design work, or could you be doing the same copy-paste buildings at any other firm? Just curious what your reasons for liking it enough to stay are.

We do a little bit of everything. I'm a field guy so I'm managing the construction on a lot of jobs and thats what I enjoy.

5 YEARS?!?

You have the patience of a saint, apparently.
I do somewhat. I really love what I do and where I work. They gave me a company car for work and personal use, put mine and my wife's cellphone on the company plan, done lots to help us get by while the company has been struggling as well.

The raise was around 35%
