My new used bike came with Kenda Blue groove front and nevegal rears. Short of killing them with fire and putting on maxxis DHF 3C 2.5 ZOMG front and rears, can I do anything to make the blue groove a passable tire? It looks like you can cut the nevergrip to make it a decent tire. Can i cut, sipe, reverse, weld, microwave or sharpie my blue groove to make it perform admirably as a DH/FR tire?

I don't have any experience with it, but that's never stopped me e-speculating before...

How round is the profile? If it's not too round, then you could experiment by cutting down the intermediate blocks in the row of three. I would take them down to half height and probably cut the outside edge off in order to allow the shoulder blocks to engage in a corner better.

If the profile is too round, you might end up with a pretty slidey dead spot though.

Hack half of the knobs out to make a faux-hillbilly mud tire frankenstein thing.

just suck it up and get them. you know you're gonna hate the kednas.
i already do, the bruised groove washed out on a fire road at about 20....but if I can find any use for these pigs, I'd be happy. Maybe I'll take nsm's advice and rock them as back tires and just do skidz all day.

take these tires and your hayes mags and make a bar/beater bike

I have a BG in my front wheel. Pumped to hi pressure and coupled to a stiff fork, it makes fora great cornering training. ;)
BTW, beware the flanks. They're thin as smoking paper. On tarmac it's noisy & slow, and on hard packed ground/rock I'd say it performs average.

If you hate it so much, you can either give it away or put it in the rear and give it some trash.

I got some of those Ardents last winter for about the same price and they sucked compared to my usual Minion DHFs. I guess they might be better than the Kendas but don't expect miracles.

Agree! I even ran one (2.4 42 durometer) on the front of my trail bike. Tended to wash out quite a bit. I really had to lean them quite a bit to get traction. Dare I say it, I replaced it with a (gasp) Kenda Excavator (hey, it was free) and got better traction.

I saw some 2.3 Happy Medium DH's from kenda at a shop here. Looked pretty interesting to me considering most our tracks have a lot of pedaling!

This and the Hayes thread have me wondering: what is the biggest pos to win a WC race?
Probably shaums march's 98 or 99 ellsworth dare. Had a zzyzx, was an ellsworth, double wide rims (or fat alberts before they were DWs) and he crushed the competition until he broke his neck, then he came in second or something like that.

that's disappointing to hear. I'll probably just save my money then and see if I can get another bro deal on a pair of butchers or get my hands on some minions. I hate kenda tires but they're what came on the bike....just want to know if there's any way to encourage them to work.

those look a little spooky for a general all conditions tire. I have a pair of clapped out minions that I'll use for places like highland or diablo, but for real downhilling I like a tire with meat on it. Maybe I'll slap the old DHF on the rear and just buy a new front DHF....but I still want to try and pry some life out of these kendas.

Any reason why you hate Kendas? I've been using them on my hardtail for years and now have them on my Enduro (2.3 Nevegal). I've liked them so far but obviously I've only been riding a lot in the past 4 years and am not an expert with tires or bike parts.

Just the quality is disappointing. I had a k-rad and got more pinch flats on that single tire than any other tire I've ever used, and it was like a 2.3" urban tire.

I've used nevegals in the past @ highland on another bike, and thought they did just fine, but highland in the dry just doesn't compare to say, whiteface in the wet. I'm not a racer and I don't need the very best traction all the time, but I've found that good tires can make a significant difference to any DH rider. I don't know that I as a skilled but not-so-fast guy will ever really push a tire to its limits, but a bad tire can be HORRIBLE even if I can't push a good tire to its limits.

Anyways, I don't have anything particularly against kenda, I just know that other people HATE them, so I want to try and see what I can do to make them good or at least give them a shot without dying.

I wouldn't be caught dead using these for normal riding on an actual fun DH course. But I'm in a position competitively where this could bump me up quite decently at venues with long pedally mild tracks if it does what I think it does. But I've never ridden a semi slick tire before. Is rear braking performance (actually stopping power not just rear-steering) one of those things you take for granted until you lose it?

The Telonix seemed to be their best all purpose tire I saw. The profile is a little round and the knobs a little small and squirmy (from touching), but on a wide rim and on the trail they seemed to do all right. Half the price of the Maxxis equivalents is not bad either.

Disclaimer: I still run Maxxis DHF's for must stuff but this s#!ts getting expensive, there's gotta be a better way! Also falling in love with Hillbillies but that's another expensive money sink!

Ah thats cool, there is no way I'd be pushing tires to the limit. I'm obviously not the fastest or craziest rider. I'm definitely not planning on racing anytime soon cause I'd get my @ss kicked.

Most of the places we ride are fairly dry except for the occasional mudfest at Swain after a decent storm.

yeah, I mean I came from Nokians and arrow tires before I got my first set of DHFs, and it was night and day. I could lean further, pedal faster, hook up in crazy situations, and my bike was lighter and shed mud faster. In certain situations I could push them over the limit (all tires have limits of course) but the gazzi jr. limit vs. the DHF/R limit was just so different.

I too start with Nokians. 2.8 Gazzas on DX32's. I was definitely the coolest dude on the mountain, no question!

Actually, Swain runs a lift in the summer time so no need for a shuttle. They're not open every weekend but a decent number of them. They also hold motocross races there in the summer now. They build a small moto track at the bottom and goes up a few of the runs. It's pretty fun to hit the table tops and drop aways on the mtn bikes.
