More than 38 million adults in the U.S. binge drink alcohol about four times a month, a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report finds. The activity is more common among younger people, but older people who binge drink do it more often. The average highest number of drinks consumed at a time is eight.

The Vital Signs report released Tuesday defines binge drinking as having four or more drinks (for women) or five or more drinks (for men) on one occasion. Men and women 18 to 34 comprise the group with the most binge drinkers, but those 65 and older do it more frequently, about five to six times a month on average.

Researchers also broke down binge drinking by income, finding that the activity is more common among those with a household yearly income of $75,000 or more. But those who make less than $25,000 a year consume the highest number of drinks at a time, about eight to nine on average.

Areas in the country where binge drinking is more common include New England, Hawaii, the Midwest, Washington, D.C., and Alaska. The report also found that more than half the alcohol adults drink is consumed while binge drinking. Among young people it's 90%.

Men who binge drink consume more drinks than women, and they do it more often: an average nine drinks five times per month, versus 5.9 drinks 3.2 times a month.

Surprisingly, the report also noted that most people who binge drink are not alcoholics or dependent on alcohol. But binge drinking does have serious health and social consequences, such as suicide and car wrecks, and it's a risk factor for cardiovascular conditions and sexually transmitted diseases.

The figures come from a 2010 survey of about 458,000 adults in the U.S. age 18 and older.

"We need to work together to implement proven measures to reduce binge drinking at national, state and community levels," said CDC director Dr. Thomas R. Frieden in a news release.

Suggestions for curbing binge drinking include the government collaborating with states and communities in backing binge drinking prevention programs, states tracking binge drinking behavior, and healthcare providers screening patients for the behavior and helping them to stop.

5 drinks seems a little low to qualify as binge. Especially if those are 12oz beers.
Hanging out after a day of snowboarding/biking and 5 bottles over 2-3 hours doesn't seem all that excessive. Maybe I just have drunk friends.

Binge drinking or heavy episodic drinking is the modern epithet for drinking alcoholic beverages with the primary intention of becoming intoxicated by heavy consumption of alcohol over a short period of time.
Guess I'm a binge drinker as are all of my friends, cousins, aunts, and uncles.

If I drink less than 5 or 6 beers in 2-3 hr I won't even maintain a buzz. Then I'm just pissing money away, literally.

Also does a 22oz bottle of 9%abv beer count as one drink? :D

I used to be able to consume mass quantitys of booze and scrambled eggs. Amazingly If you eat enough eggs before you go to bed you won't get a hangover the next day no matter how much booze you drink. Add some kielbasa and you're golden. I swear....

This is my life. Wake up, go to work...then drink all night (5 days a week), weekends come...ride moto or dh and then party till I can feel my body and or feelings. Does this count?

Not to mention, I do enjoy a plant that grows naturally but makes you feel good while drinking ;) Don't think I'll live very long at this rate...

I'm of Mexican/Latino origin, I don't call that binge drinking. That's part of my normal everyday routine.
I commend you on your effort however you cannot even possibly imagine a place as boring as Norwood MA. So you cannot imagine the amount of alcohol consumption that it would require to actually live there. I call it binge living. Imagine all the great bears produced in Eastern Mass, well they have never heard of them and drink Budweiser instead.

When I was in college, I learned from a medical article not to take aspirin prior to or during alcohol consumption. It defeats the enzyme in your tummy that breaks down part of the alcohol so your body doesn't absorb it all.

I relayed the info one night to some guys on the hall. Next thing you know, they chuck aspirin 30 minutes before they start up. (in the name of science of course).

Don't remember ever hearing back from them on their findings.

...and I don't I can count them among the 17% if they actually drank less.
