I'm sorry your buddy got fired from your favorite local hill, but like anything in nature, the weak and the sick die first, and the strong keep going. I'm not sorry that i'd like to see the strong mountains get stronger. Just because diablo might be the closest, doesn't inherently mean it's the best choice. Yeah, you can get mcdonalds on any corner, but maybe you should drive a tiny bit further for the real thing.
I live in Southeastern PA. It wasn't that Diablo was the closest/best/favorite; it was that it was the only real lift served mountain within 3 hours. (Launch doesn't even count) There isn't a "drive a tiny bit further" option. Next closest is 5+ hours one way. DH isn't my life, it's just something I do for fun. Driving 10+ hours to ride just doesn't make sense. The death of Diablo means I don't get to ride DH very often this year, and that pisses me the fcuk off.

I'm glad to hear the park will carry on, although I haven't been there in years because I did not want my money to support Shawn. I'm suprised it lasted as long as it did with the way he burned bridges, his lack of passion and the way he milked the business. Just read the opis on facebook- he takes no accountability for of any of the deal, claims the other party broke their contractual obligation, and puts enough drama in it with "broken promises" and "once bitten twice shy" for Taylor Swift to write a song about it. Pimping-out the Open is all that is left, and that leaves Whiteface, Snow, Platty or any other east coast mountain to host something huge that weekend.

Best of luck to whomever takes it over....... and to Lazlo and Downhill Mike finding more well-deserved success at their mountains.

LIKE

I gave Shawn a mile of room, he was pretty cool with me in general, but the clear evidence and universal feedback about his me first, my way or the highway attitude gave me 'pause'

I am 'one of those' people who feel that businesses and life should be run in a way suiting the core ideals, the reason for being - not the end game of profit. Yes, profit and capitalism are good, but when the product or service is compromised for increased profit - the core is depleted.

So whomever hopefully takes over - I wish you great financial success, but please don't let money trump honor and your commitment to excellence.

Thanks Spinteck! Laz and I have stuff in the works! And our event at the Whiteface Mountain Bike Park on opening weekend will be much bigger than any US Open of Mountain Biking with as many as 1,400 athletes alone! Not a typo. One thousand four hundred.

At 1st I tried not to thread jack. At this point, I don't think it really matters.

New park will be built up and run by RIDERS for RIDERS!

Just remember, there is already a bike park here at Mt. Creek. It's not like we are going to be starting from scratch. The trials need some serious work, but there is no doubt that the park can EASILY be reopened with all the existing trails. I can't see a bunch of new stuff going in the first season, as it will be spent restoring the park back to its "glory days" condition. The mountain coaster installation ran directly through some of the old trails, re-routing the bottom (riders left side of the mt.) will be challenging. Sadly Das Wall, Sram berm/table, Progression Drops, and the Greenhorn "Speed Slide" area are gone for good. That only means there will be new trails built. Have no fear little ones, you will see, DH/FR will be VERY alive and VERY well at Mt. Creek!

No disrespect, but who are you? What is your affiliation with the mountain? Your title? Your staff? Where's your website? What's your planned opening date? Talk's cheap, but a $279 season pass that is only good to wipe my arse isn't. One of the first things you should be doing is contacting each and every person that bought that season pass and bringing them out of the dark. Cryptic posts on an internet forum don't carry much weight.

Agree that it would be a smart move for the Mystery Group that is saving Mountain Creek to make a some what official announcement to counteract the negative effects of the Vital and Pinkbike releases of Diablo's comments. Otherwise when May comes along you may have more of a uphill struggle trying to convince prior customers to return.

Honestly, I don't care if someone calls me, as long as there's a place to ride in 4 months that will accept my season pass, whether that place is called "Diablo", "Mountain Creek", "Vernon Valley Great Gorge", or "Action Park" I don't care..

I am on the phone with my credit card trying to get my money back. Rather risk paying full boat for a new season pass then lose $279

all in good time. those of us who know can't say anything, and those officially involved aren't yet able to announce anything at this time because its not 100% a done deal (its about 99.999% from what I've been told), so just hold your horses. Bitching and moaning on the internet isn't gonna accomplish anything.

Was thinking the same thing. The way it reads on the FB announcement (and seeing peoples reactions that the "mountain is closing"), it would be good to dis spell that rumor. Diablo FB announcement did not mention that another group is taking over, thus most people think that biking there is kaput. Better try to get out ahead of the bad PR.

The announcement on Diablo's site says Diablo Freeride Park is dead, it does not say mountain biking in general is dead at the mountain. http://diablofreeridepark.com/index2.html

Shawn would have nothing to gain by posting about any positive future at the mountain.

I am reading between the lines and speculating a whole bunch with this: If there is a new group in place to run the park, there would be no formal announcement until Diablo was officially dead. Now the Diablo is dead an official announcement will likely come in the near future. I can not see the mountain just "closing up shop" unless the park was not making any money from it which seems very unlikely.

Almost seems like Diablo got too greedy in trying to reach a new deal and backed out. Or the mountain was tired of dealing with them and came in with a low ball deal to force them out and get a different company in place to run the park. Or some combination of the two.

Where do I bitch or moan in my post......you must be a pretty big deal in the Mountain Bike Scene to have all the inside scoop ......sorry for trying to add constuctive comments/suggestions to the Mountain Creek Mystery group.

....my only hope dream would be that the mystery group is really ...Highland's owner along with GT / Cannondale to create a "Highland Mountain 2"

Or better yet Ideride. They are doing amazing stuff at Burke.

Edit: But on second thought, I wouldn't want any attention taken away from Burke.

This is how it looks to me as well. Seems like the new management was willing to deal and wanted to extend the lease another 5 years. Thats a descent amount of time, especially if they are as against mountain biking as people are assuming.

I think they will allow mountain bikes on the lift this summer, but whether there is descent or any trail maintenance is what I am wondering.

this.

my trips for DH are looking more and more like western MA, Catskills NY, and Burke VT this year, with a dusting of lake placid.

more like a dusting of crops.

you really should add bromont to your list.
bromont is worth the trip but it takes some commitment with regards to crossing the border and ****. I keep trying to get a cross border trip at monkeyfest, but then Burke Mt goes and builds one of the most fun trails I've ridden in the past 4 years, and it's kind of tough to justify the gas money. The trails were fun there the last time I went, it's just tough to justify going there over jiminy or plattekill when I'm looking for natural DH, and whiteface has more vert....

bromont is best with a group of people, and not just for saving on gas.

Lets throw out a couple facts here.

1. Diablo is closed, that means shawn is out
2. mountain biking will happen at the same location next year-name not decided yet, but its NOT diablo
3. do you like dominion and alpine? the same person that built and designed them is taking it over
4. it is already owned by mountain creek, they run the lift for "skyrides" anyway-biking will resume
5. they are aware of the neglect of trails and poor business strategy running it, the new group can fix it
6. expect everything to be as usual with the exception of the hamburglar driving his porshe to the handicrapped spot

Consider this 100%, it isnt released yet, neither is the 2014 F150, but you know its coming, if you dont believe it than run to platty and hide under a rock, there will be biking, it will be better, it will be this season. Shawn was like a bad tenant, his eviction was a long time coming
