Can I run a 2.8 spring on my 3.0 stroke shock?

I have an orange 224 evo that has a CCDB rear shock. I cant source the spring I want for it (400 x 3.0 Ti) but I found an RCS Ti spring on ebay in a 400 x 2.8.

will this work ok or will it coil bind?

RCS did/does not make a 2.8" stroke spring (no reason to as no shocks are this stroke). Have the seller tell you what it REALLY is.

IIRC some of the lower rate springs are the same for 2.75 and 3.00 due to the smaller wire gauge (3" stroke would impart higher stresses in the spring).

Steel I woudln't try it but Ti? In most cases yes you can. I also remember UDI claiming that RCS springs are undersized so you can run it with no problems.

Nah, I didn't - I've done it with Progressive, Manitou, and DSP Ti springs though and had no problems.

I'm guessing RCS would be fine too but obviously try it at your own risk. The other thing is that the CCDB body is a tight fit with most 1.43" ID springs, so watch out for spring rub.

Especially with RCS springs...

I owned 2 Diverse springs for my CCDB shocks, and they didn't rub a peep. RCS on my big bike with a softer spring rate rubbed slightly more than the Diverse I replaced it with.

Looks like I might have an RCS on my CCDB in the near future. Any established ways to minimize spring rubbing or protecting the shock? Shrink wrap or bathroom tape?

It's not too often you use the last 1/4" of travel, but when you do you'll be subjecting the spring to more stress than it was designed for and shortening it's life to some extent, assuming it doesn't bind and break the shock.

Are you sure you weren't claiming that one company 3.0 ti runs at 3.5 or 3.75? Progressive work though. Tried it after you suggested it the first time and it worked like a charm.

Davep is right. This size doesn't make any sense for an RCS spring. 2.8 is the length that Fox uses for a 2.5" stroke shock. They measure compressible length as opposed to shock stroke. I would pass on it.

Haha, might be better to quote my posts directly if you're going to say I said something (to avoid confusion) - but I think I would have been talking about the DSP 2.5 spring that actually has an actual stroke before binding of about 3.5" (obviously you'd never go that far) but it's been working fine for ages now on a 3.0 shock.

I also ran a progressive 2.5 on 3.0 shock for a long time and it worked fine, but just so everyone knows, progressive brand springs are too small in ID (1.41") for CCDB's. Work fine on Fox shocks.

Sorry Udi. Didn't want to put words in your mouth. Tried to look it up but my RM search skills apparently suck. I think it was on some RC4 topic.

wow, I thought me using a 2.75 progressive was cutting it close ha ha.

I ran a progressive on my CCDB but had to cut the black plastic thing off the shock body. Even the stock steel CCDB coil was rubbing it though.
