Been out of jumping for a few years, but ride every day. Looking at doing some DJ.

Which bike would you buy, and why?

DK Cygnus 24

Diamondback Session Pro 24

Stolen Saint 24

I don't want it to fall apart, and I am not super concerned about weight as long as it is 28lbs or lighter.

Any suggestions?

the geo on the Stolen is the best of the three. it is also more modern, with the smaller gearing combo (25/10). however, it's dissapointing they didn't use all chromoly frame and fork, whereas the DK Cygnus 24 does have it. but the Cygnus still suffers from a short-in-the-front + long-in-the-back design. the Diamond Back is plain steel as well as not-cool geometry and parts.

you should also check out Sunday Model C complete.

the best option (bust costlier) would be a custom build-up with a Liquid frame, or a Sunday Wave C frame.

I can't afford the wave c or the liquid, unfortunately, though I did check those options out.

The DK and the Diamondback are both 100% chromoly. The Stolen Saint has a chromoly "main frame." I think this means that the front triangle is chromoly and the stays are hi-ten. I am not that worried about that so much, it is still the lightest build. Plus is it has the best geometry, and I would not need to replace the bars with taller ones. I wonder if there are any reviews of it?

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the wave-c have a hi-ten rear triangle?
nope. the Wave C is a frame-only with top notch material.
see http://www.sundaybikes.com/catalog/frames/plus-4/wave-c/

i think it was the cheaper Model C complete (not the Ex/Pro version) that had some hi-ten.

if you're really on a budget, check craigslist.

you're in washington state and that thing is in Iowa . . . .

but no, i wouldn't recommend that bike. it's your typical race cruiser but from a non-bmx company (kona) and therefore just sorta not cool. not that there's anything wrong with kona, it's just that if you ever try to sell it again, bmx'ers won't even click on a picture of it.

ahahahaha. Des Moines, WASHINGTON. :)

That Kona is overpriced and as mentioned a race bike.

What is your price range?

IMO, most of these stock 24's are all too short in the top tube area.

Based off of that, I'd go w/ the Stolen because it says it's got a 21.5 inch top tube. The others are shorter than that.

A 300 dollar bike won't hold up to much abuse but it will get you out and about.

better/longer TT ^ . but I think the BB is too high for jumping.

I owned last years model and really enjoyed it. I bought that bike and swapped the frame for a Liquid.

Where are you jumping on Vashon?

It's starting to look like the Stolen is the bike of choice. The 75.5 HA on the p.24 really worries me. That is steep! I really am not jazzed about the model c. People love the geometry because it is supposed to feel like a twenty. I am not that excited about twenty inch bikes. I am pretty sure a lower bb will make it feel less cramped,

As to jumps on Vashon: There are a few secret short DH runs, but not much. A few friends of mine are getting back into the sport this summer, and we have plans to dig at three locations, all of which are legal and legit, one is even public, at the Vashon Skatepark at BARC. I will also ride the park, and some street, but mostly dirt.

I am most excited about a spot where I am breaking dirt today. It is in the woods at a friend's house, so it is both legal, and we don't have to worry about goons ruining our jumps while we are gone.

Found the 2012 Stolen Saint for like $375 online. Good deal?

I could be into helping throw dirt. Not on DH stuff though... :) DJ's only. I live nearish to the vashon ferry dock in seattle.

The 75.5 HT on the P-24 didn't seem odd or weird to me at all.

Oh, turns out the $375 deal was a scam indonesian bike dealer. Watch out for those if buying online! The stolen is a QBP product, so I think I will just get it shipped to my LBS, because paying full retail at danscomp is pointless when I can pay full retail at the lbs and at least get it assembled by a pro for zero dollars!

I am gonna go break dirt, maybe in a few weeks I will have a bike and some trails. Currently it's not something worth coming out for, but maybe later in spring it will be. I will post pics!

What about a Specialized p24?
Takes inspiration from the model c and is built good to a budget. Also it is full chromoly on everything.

I like the p.24 but it costs even more than the sunday. The Stolen is full Chromoly 4130 and the geometry on the two is almost identical...

On another note, I made a dirt jump, cleared it at 7am today. Currently the trails consist of a left berm, right berm, and a jump, more to come soon!

the P24 also has a hard/worthless seat. Unless they changed it for 2012.

Pics of the jumps? and have any designs been drawn up for the public park you mentioned? I'd love to be a part of that, if possible. :)

Hey, I have a DK Cygnus 24" and I love it. It's a good ride for what I like to do, which is just get some nice air for now. :) All of my friends that ride 20's though love it. They all comment on how crazy stable it is. I'm new to the game, and I joined up late, so they're opinion counts a lot for me as of now. And I live in Port Orchard, and had NO idea that Vashon had jumps. Should have figured it though. You islanders always have some crazy, hidden, neat things. ;) But yeah, Me and my buddies could be down for a short ferry ride to help out.

iksmudge, any tips on finding a US dealer for the Mongoose Thrive 24? It seems like a nice bike for a good price, but it's "not for sale in the USA" according to the Mongoose site.

The Cygnus has nice short CS at 15" and a mellow HA at 73.5, but I just can't get over the 21" TT, that is real short. I am 5'10" but I am used to mountain bikes so I don't want a short cockpit. Then again, the thing is damned cheap and has good parts.

Then again, the Cygnus has a steeper seat tube, and the Saint tt is only a half inch longer, so there is less than a half inch difference between the two. The Cygnus looks more like a mountain bike, but all my friends who ride 20 inch like the Saint geo better.

At 5'10" I can't imagine the 21" tt to be much of an issue for you. For me, that is pretty much my only complaint. I'm 6'3" and I can't do x-ups on it cause I hit my feet with the tire. I suppose I could try shorter crank arms, but at 175, they are already a little small for me. My ideal 24" would have a 22"tt, but I'm poor so I ride what I got and it works great for almost everything I do with it.

I'm 5.8", run 170 cranks and a 22.25 top tube and still get toe scrub at times.

but like you said, ride what you can afford....

Not sure but could you get one shipped from the UK?
Winstanleys have one on sale and I think they ship.
No idea on costs.
Good luck.

I am now in a quandary, do I want the BB in line with the axles or do I want the BB above the axles? I need to ride a Sunday and a more typical bike to compare!

yeah, but its not so bad.

i started on my liquid with 23/10 and it felt way too small, despite being so close to 25/9 on a 20. i went to 23/9. lots of my friends have started riding 28/9 or 30/9 on their 20s, especially trail riders

That's not what their website says....

But, I wouldn't worry about it. Ride that frame and start saving for that liquid. ;)
Oh snap. It says chromoly MAIN FRAME... I guess that is only top and down tube?

I think it's 25/10. A little fast, but I can wheelie my road bike up most hills and it has more meters development and longer chainstays. It should be a fine gear for most stuff.

yea, that's just top/down tube, I think. (rear end is hi-ten for sure)

I run 25/10 on my 24. Feels fine and I'm not one for overly hard gearing.
