SoCal!! San Fernando Valley
Sorry, I already posted this in the SoCal forum, but I just wanted everyone to see this who may ride in this area.

So I was riding out at rocky peak this afternoon and heading down one of the Freeride trails to Corriganville and ran into Ranger Jim. He said they will be Fining riders $1000 dollars for riding down "Lower G" and "Side Action/Lower Stagecoach". There are "no biking" signs in front of both trails now. Stage Coach (Santa Sue to Corriganville) trail will be the next to be closed down due to how blown out it is from unskilled riders blowing out the turns and off camber slopes. I'm lucky that I saw the signs before I rode down to the bottom and got fined. There was a ranger in his SUV waiting at the bottom. I think that the best thing to do for now is to just stay off of these trails to keep the attention down. Hopefully they will stop patrolling eventually. The less riders they catch the less they will be posted up down there.
This pisses me off because these are my home trails and I ride them weekly! Unskilled and new riders don't understand what circumstances their actions cause for all of us.
I feel that Hummingbird trail may be next to go due to all of the "Jumps" and "Drops" poorly built into the trail and all of the switchback cuts that go straight down. These are causing major erosion and they are dangerous to Hikers. There are better trails to ride our downhill bikes on and I think we need to get rid of these features or this trail may be next.

Last time I rode hummingbird there were so many lines that it was difficult to stay on trail, it's too bad there are so many people that think they have the right to cut new lines and built ****ty jumps where ever they want. It also highlights the issues of legal trails in SoCal. In my mind, mountain bikers are going to need legal trails and parks to ride because we're are not going to stop riding trails even when rangers start handing out tickets. Too bad, really, but I think if the right advocacy groups get involved then it could turn out to be a win-win. I look at "bike parks" like santiago oak and Aliso Woods that have worked with local authority to build sustainable trails that are monitored by locals, those are the template the Simi people need to be following. That and we need lift service trails.

BTW, Ian, Sui is illegal and rangers are scouting, no doubt it's on the list for closure too.

Yeah, I'm guessing the whole caught poaching aspect has more to do than "unskilled riders" as far as closing goes.

Can you close something that was never open?

or rather then building trails, allowing trails to be built and charging for day use. Thats whats happened in auburn for instance - moto trails/mountain bike trails ending in the moto park, and they charge 10 bucks for day use/parking. as long as everybody keeps it within reason, eg no huge jump lines, no cutting trails, etc, everybody wins.

Maybe riders should spend their time building trails not complaining on the internet about their illegal riding.
...wut?

You know you're talking about a trail that was built where there was nowhere to build a legal trail, and then people proceeded to spend thousands of hours building, right?

Yeah, the rangers and sheriffs in NorCal have admitted to frequenting the forums in order to gather info on illegal trails. Your situation down south sucks, but best to keep it, and trail names, off the internet.

you should try to get the local community to do something like this:

http://www.townoffrisco.com/adventure-park/summer/bike-park-2/

I was driving past it on the way up to breck this fall and saw it. I stopped at the park on the way back to the highway and was blow away by how cool it was. It seems that it would be much more manageable to allow trails in a controlable way that for the bandit trails that will exist otherwise. Hypothetically, I've built both and in one case the land owner/government knows who to talk to and someone is responsible for the trails and in the other case you have an unknown group bulding whatever.

Anyway, I would be all over building something like the frisco trails here. However, the ski hills aren't interested in making some money and the hills on public land aren't worth my time.

Sorry I have not been part of the discussion I started.
We want this to get exposure. That is the point. People need to know that these trails are closed now and we need to respect the rangers or things will just get worse for us. I'm not posting directions and pictures of the trail head, I'm saying if you know where they are, stay off for now.
And hummingbird trail will be next on their list of closures. There are a few people talking to the rangers and the simi park district. They have allocated $30K to the restoration of "side action" to its original form. It is a historic road from the 1800's so that is understandable. And crossing the rail road tracks anywhere besides a designated spot is a $500 fine and that trail crosses the tracks at the end.
The switchback cuts down hummingbird is what is drawing all the attention to that trail. Some locals have been up there to try and close them off, but some numbskull riders have already ridden through them. We need to put the word out there to not cut the switchbacks and don't do the drops lower down the trail. If you ride hummingbird please just stick to the trail.
