Any chance for a real discussion about Pinkbike?

I understand this site has been constructed on Pinkbike hatred, and I respect that. When I first started posting here there was a "pinkbike feet" joke in almost every thread, and a steady stream of hilarious bikes with 24X3in Gazzis to take e-sh!ts on.

While I would never suggest that much has changed on the forum side of things (exhibit A, and B ), there is no denying that the site has played a much larger, and much more legitimate role in the industry in the past few years. In the past year(ish) alone they've brought on Sterling Lorence, Ian Hylands, and Richard Cunninham, they get exclusives like this, and they have videos with literally hundreds of thousands of views.

What do you guys think? How many of your check the PB front page often? What do you think of their coverage of the industry/culture?

As for myself, in the past I used PB almost exclusively for the Buy&Sell section. While it took a lot of sorting through BS posts and questions, the selection was always bigger than RM (albeit so was the risk). In the last couple years I've checked the home page more and more and currently its one of the top few sites that I visit. The format really intrigues me. I don't really do the social media side of it, but I like that what people write or shoot can eventually make it to the front page. Every once in a while I'll wonder if the forum has gotten any better, venture in, and quickly backpedal. Its good to see kids stoked on bikes, but the stupidity in there is still almost numbing.

I think overall, its good for the industry to have daily updates and new content on a site with what appears to be a real budget. I know a lot of people will argue that its still just hype and nonsense, but I'm ready to argue against that.

Also, I know it may seem weird to have a discussion on RM about how good I think they're competitor has gotten, but let me say that I still love this site. The discussion here is on a whole different level, and both sites definitely have their advantages. I'm just interested in a industry oriented quasi-sociological discussion of what is probably the most visited site in mountain biking.

Pinkbike has a great buy n sell, they have a good front page its more magazine versus technical like ridemonkey. I prefer the depth and of course the witty smart@$$ comments from local monkie residents versus the bantering of youth and who there favorite rider is and its because of his fork. Yeah pinkbike feet may be 3" on the foot there are some good riders there for sure and alot of youth that will eventually calm down a bit.
That said you can't deny the front page and exclusives they get or the fact for such a monster of a site how well it runs its pretty impressive and the mods/guys I've had a couplechats with put up with alot of stuff so kudos to them. Pinkbike has done very well.

Ridemonkey first and foremost for the actuall technical aspect of the members and the core group on here. I cant begin to explain the amount of know how and technical help these pages have provided along with riding buddies.

they do have some good coverage on new products or "behind the scenes" type articles on their home page, thats for sure. i only visit their forums when i need a good laugh or i am looking for a good face palm comment. i hope it doesnt represent too much of our "culture" after reading the dribble that comes out of people's mouth on the site.

their classifieds seems to be the only place i sell anything...and ive sold a ton through that site.

I've been impressed with the way they've stepped it up and I do actually check the sight often.. it's more of what I would consider an "online magazine" for lack of a better term. However, I think it's a completely different animal from ridemonkey. Pinkbike would have to be a bunny or a flamingo (owing to it's pink color), in which case a monkey would just kill and eat either of those.

I have to add that I was excited to read about that inverted 40 this morning- and the "how to's" although mostly basic have some good gems of information that I have missed over the years. I think it was cool that they put up how to mod the mission control damper a while back.

Pinkbike has a good front page with some good stuff on it.
They have a great buy/sell if you are willing to deal with a few questions like, "How much will you knock off the frame if I send you naked pics of my mom, and the entire Policy Academy DVD set."
Pinkbike is a useful site as long as you never go into the forums or read the comments from the articles.
If you do a "before and after" IQ test before reading the comments from a pinkbike article, your IQ will drop 20 points. True story.

I check Pinkbike, Dirt, and Vital daily, pretty much covers the gamut for news. Pinkbike definitely has the most content, and stuff like POD and VOD is actually pretty cool, as is the social side since I can see photos and videos from my friends abroad (I don't really do Facebook). I don't ever hit the forums on Pinkbike though. On the other hand, RM is really only a forum community to me. I don't ever go to the RM homepage...

Must spread rep.:D

Front page is really good I think. From time to time they have some really interesting storys, like the test ride of Faircloughs bike or the training advices.
What they also have is some of the best bike related photographys and webisodes on their page so cudos for that:thumb:
Just never click on the "forum" button!

I'm with you on both of these points. The forum here is far and away better than anything else I've used.

What about Vital? They are certainly trying hard, they appear have the connections, and they seem to be doing all the right things, but (forgive this) the magic just doesn't seem to be there. Its almost like by the time Vital became Vital Pinkbike already had such a large market share that Vital couldn't amass the community necessary to make a site set up like theirs work. I went there regularly for a long time, but now it just seems like I'm watching more ads for older info whenever I go there. Also, can anyone confirm that their video player is really slow? For me, it takes longer to load than any other players. That said, I'm in S. Korea now and I don't remember it being a problem before, that may have something to do with it.

If you stay out of the comments and forums, its probably the best site out there...Vital is my favorite during the race season but Pinkbike for sure this time of year.

No hate for pinkbike here.

I think vital is fantastic, just has a bit less content.

Watching Sven's slideshows on a weekend morningbefore heading out to ride dh is def a highlight of the week for me. I think i am going to just start playing that background music 100% of the time.

I agree with many of the comments above. Vital and Dirt are the shizz for WC Racing coverage. Pinkbike is fun for this time of year but really more eye candy than anything else to me.

Didn't pinkbike hire that Richard Cunningham from MBA?

If so, it turned out better than I expected it to. Don't really visit the site much, though.

The way I break i down for online mtb content-

mtbr-
The classic mountain bike forum/website, you cant fight it, mtbr has some history. Also, it has one of the largest demographics that will actually pay retail for products, let alone it has the largest hits of any mtb site. Yet its media coverage and content is way bellow many others. It recently went through a facelift, great thing to do finally, but it still isnt producing new and interesting content.

Vitalmtb-
new comer to the the interwebz throw down, but creating more UNIQE content than competitors. yes it doesnt have the forums or user interaction like mtbr or pinkbike(or RM). it makes up for the lack of user created content with professional stories that no one else has. it seem that vital suits the older generation of huckers that have wised up after a few to many 'to flat''s in their younger years

Pinkbike-
its become a wantabe digital magazine. it is constantly posting new content, keeping the newer generation satisfied, which constantly wants new and more info. there content might be the top caliber but they continue to have user generated content come in at a never ending flow.

each one fits a different group of riders better and yet at the same time they each have certain strengths that other do not

just as an fyi: vitalMTB is run by the same guys that used to do littermag (which had great content). they worked a deal with the vital media group, which seems to have worked out very well.

exactly - they are incredible the angles, the audio, the quality of the photography. just gets me psyched to ride.

I also think that NSMB.com deserves mention here, I look at that every day, they have great stories and photos as well. And let's face it, the northwest has it going on in this industry, its a cool locals look into the hotbed.

I still have tons of photos saved as part of my screensaver with the littermag logo stamped on them. oldschool for sure. I think my favorite is one from the south africa world cup with a picture of an elephant taking a basketball size dump.

I'm with you here too. I used to check NSMB more often than anything when I first started riding 8 or 9 years ago, but for whatever reason tapered off to almost never a year or two ago. Now every time I go back I've been really impressed. They have a great perspective and shell out awesome content at a very respectable, but comparatively slow pace.

I've had PB at the top of my firefox browser history ever since interbike last year.

I had no internet access between interbike 2011 and December 2011 MIGHT have had something to with it but nonetheless their content is Excellent 10/10.

As far as bike websites go for original content, PB, Vital and Dirty are my top three and thats in no particular order.

As far as forums are concerned: there is only the mighty RM

In the past 2 years, PB has stepped it up massively as a news site in my opinion. Having pro photographers running the visual side of things is great, and Mike Levy's technical contributions and reviews are top notch - arguably the best in the industry right now IMO (that said, I haven't checked Sick Lines for a while and I think they used to set the standard there). It still has a pretty young average user age, so you get the forums and commentary that go along with that (way better than it used to be though), but it really is a site worth visiting nowadays.

RM is still the mutt's nuts for tech heads though. There isn't much interesting DH related stuff that doesn't find its way into the DH forum here!

I've been a huge fan of PB's front page for a long time, the technical articles are excellent and there's always good photos to match. Their article on the Carbon Dorado is an excellent recent example I can think of.

The other cool thing on PB that not many people might be aware of is the image search, I've found it fantastic to find pictures of obscure bikes / parts / gear that I haven't been able to find on google.

The only thing I don't like is that signing up to post comments requires a username with four characters or greater. :(

IMO pinkbike is, like stated before, is more of an online magazine and can't be beat for the stuff featured on its homepage. I also really like the tech tuesday videos they have been putting put, been pretty useful for me. I never step into the forums. Sites I visit daily are pinkbike, vital, and factory Jackson(very worth checking out) for news related stuff and videos.

Two other sites I visit daily are mtbr and rm for forum stuff, both of those cannot be beat for actually having intelligent conversation.

I use to go to dirt daily but it's geared more towards uk news which is useless for me, I like to go there occasionally to check out their dirttv edits, rather enjoy those. They also have excellent wc coverage with practice, qualifying, and finals edits, and interviews/pit chit chat.
