Hi, my name is DirtMcGirk, and I am a fat ****....

Somehow moving to AZ I went from 230 to 280 in 1.5 years. I think the whole "fat and happy" thing of being in a good, healthy, quasi-normal relationship got the better of me. Well that and blowing out my knee snowboarding. But I digress.

Really been trying to crank out rides to get ready to go on my semi-homoerotic road trip to Moab with my buddies at the end of March. Getting back up to ten mile rides, getting them done in an hour and change, not stopping as often, all of that, and I am back down to about 255# right now.

But let me tell you cousin, being this fat sucks. Not even sure how I did it. No, that's a lie. A keggerator, working 20 hour days and hiding from the sun while eating around 3000 calories a day. Yup, that did it.

Take some advice from your old "what not to do" mentor Dirt, don't get fat. It sucks getting it off. Parts of my body hurt that never did before, like my hips and shoulders. On the upside, I feel better today then I have in almost two years. Now if I can just get down to 200#, I'll be living the dream.

This has been a PSA from your local fat ****.

I ride less and sit and play drums more....hence the 20# gain in the last half a year. I'm at almost 225 now and I hate it.

My wife signed me onto her acct at the Y, and I'm buying some running shoes.

Monkey wrench in all this: my cheap 29er was stolen last night. My only bike. SWEET.

Oh, and things to work on:
1) stop drinking soda, etc. - Water should be most of what you drink
2) If sugar/corn syrup is one of the first four ingredients, put it down fatty.
3) Eat more salad. They are filling and healthy, as long as you use a simple oil/vinegar dressing. Try to avoid the ranch/blue.
4) Eat fruit. It's sweet, filling, and good for you.

Those four should help your fat ass lose some weight.

two more:

5) try to consume the majority of your calories in breakfast and lunch, not dinner.
6) do a short workout (cardio, about 20-30 min) when you wake up. helps jumpstart your metabolism for the day.

My apologies for the grammatical lapse, fat man tired after riding for two hours today.

I haven't hit a drive through in a month. Haven't really eaten out, with the exception of a really nice steak house, in about that long.

I've been jog/walking in the mornings for a half hour. It helps a lot. And a lot more fruit, no more white breads, all that good stuff.

Now if I could get back to sleeping and destress some, the pounds would fly off.

Hell, I only drink once a week now. And not even to excess. Its deplorable.

You can drop 10-20lbs by just drinking water instead of sugary drinks. 85% of my liquid intake is water, 14% milk, and the last 1% juice.

^ this! change your eating habits. i stopped eating chips and that kinda crap while watching tv and started nibbling chopped up fruits /fruitsalads (add some pomegranate, yummy...) , so i could stuff things into my face while watching tv and have no bad conscience...

I lose weight when I'm lazy. 165 in great shape, 145 at my laziest. At about 150 right now. Not having a car in NZ helped. Longboarding everywhere helps teh abs and legs. If I don't build muscle I end up skin and bones.

Hmmmm while the suggestions here are good for being healthy, we are talking about losing the weight.

This is really simple. A year ago I weighed in at 326, most I have ever weighed. Right now I am 237.

Fact, build muscle...it burns fat

Fact, cardio in the morning is a good jumpstart for the day, also a light workout shortly after lunch to keep it going.

Fact...... It is less about what your eating and more about how much your eating. Eat what your craving or your still going to be hungry... IE if your craving a cheeseburger go get one..... Just cut it in half and start by throwing half of it away. Its all about total calories..... just gotta go and count them.

Now I will degress I cheated when I started removing the wieght, did that crazy HCG diet and it woked out for me. Some people do well, some do not. But when it was over I went straight into the gym with a proper diet and started raising the lean muscle and continued to drop the fat.

For me it wasnt the "not being able to see my junk without a mirror", but the fact I had to exhale to tie my shoes...... That was the slap in the face I needed.

I agree with this to a point.

Initially it IS all about the calories, not as much about what you are eating, however if you want to see significant improvement faster then the correct caloric intake COMBINED with eating healthier will make a difference much faster. Also you will find that healthier foods will leave you feeling fuller, with more energy, for less calories.....

Also don't skip out on the weight training as was mentioned, muscle eats more food, so if you are leaving yourself in a caloric deficit that muscle will eat the fat off your body....in laymans terms at least.

Yeah of course you have to clean up the diet as you go along, if your weight training and not getting enough protein all your going to make yourself wornout.....
It really is pretty basic though..... No matter what your eating throughout the day you have got to watch total calories, but if your losing weight you want higher protein itake, and lower sugar intakes, fats are not a huge issues unless your pounding fried food all the time. On top of losing the weight the more lean muscle you put on the better your your blood chemistry becomes too, more energy, just plain feel better......

Oh yeah, there is one other thing I forgot that really helps ALOT.....

This is true no matter how you argue it.... but to burn the fat, STOP the caffene. No coffee, no sodas, no caffene. It mess's with your blood sugar levels, eat an apple in the morning instad of a cup of coffee, you will actually have mroe energy.

Tell that to my daily sip of Redline.

Get enough sleep. When I need to drop a few lbs, it is harder to do when I can't clock in the zzz's.

Also, get a colonic to flush out the years of impacted sausage in your bowel.

Living the dream.
I feel your pain Dirt. I hit my heaviest last fall, 245lbs and a size 42 waist. When those pants started to get snug I decided I did not want to live like that any more. I joined a gym and initially loaded up my schedule with all the cardio fitness classes I could take. That was back in November. Around the beginning of the year I decided that I wanted more and joined the Group Results program at the gym, it includes a bunch of CrossFit styled workouts, boxing lessons, strength, power and endurance classes. Those have almost completely replaced the basic cardio I was doing before. I often double-dip, one class in the morning before work and another in the evening after work. I keep an eye on what I'm eating but overall my diet hasn't changed a whole lot, it's more a matter of "how much" instead of "what". The results that I've seen are great. I started at 245lbs and I'm down to 227 as of yesterday with a goal of 200 by June and 180 by the end of the summer. More telling than the weight though is my waist, I measured yesterday and I've lost 7" from my waist. I think it's the trainers that have made the biggest impact for me though. Without the classes I don't think I'd have the motivation to get in the gym and do this stuff on my own every day.

Highest ever was 254. Tried to get to 213 by end of last summer, got to 216. Up to 228. Have troubles removing the vat o' tea I have in the morning, have been cutting back on the soda, need to remove the multiple beers at night, downsize my eating portions (but the beef stew I made yesterday was sssoooooo good), backing off the lunch-time corn, and yes, get out and ride more.

Goal of sub-220 by Sea Otter so I can be a lighter clydesdale.....
