For me the biggest part of dropping weight has been removing beer/booze from the equation. When I was going through my divorce I kicked drinking all together, and moved into the gym. I was snowboarding every day, running every night, and lifting a lot of hate out of my system.

I was 270 when we started that, I was 205 when I got done.

Then I broke both collar bones and busted some ribs. That slowed me down, got back up to 240. Then I moved here, and that just killed it.

I feel better now then I have in a long time. I can ride for an hour without stopping. I saw my toes this morning. I just have a long way to go. The goal now is 190 by NYE 2012, assuming we're all still here.

Oh yeah, there is one other thing I forgot that really helps ALOT.....

This is true no matter how you argue it.... but to burn the fat, STOP the caffene. No coffee, no sodas, no caffene. It mess's with your blood sugar levels, eat an apple in the morning instad of a cup of coffee, you will actually have mroe energy.
I've been off caffene since '97. I sleep awesome, I need less sleep and I've never felt better.

I weighed 202 last February and now weigh 149. 36" waist to a 29. I drink so much coffee that I'm surprised I don't piss pure coffee. I'd IV it into my bloodstream if I could. I sleep eight solid hours every night.

Eliminating booze, cutting out junk food, and running 50 miles per week have played a role with the weight loss. I've been holding steady around 150 for about six months now.

Cut out the snacking and soda pops. If it has corn syrup, skip it, no matter what it is.

Exercise everyday, even if you can only take a 2 mile walk around the neighborhood. On flat ground I can walk 3 miles an hour, easy.

The key to losing weight is cardio. While lifting weights builds muscle, it doesn't necessarily drop pounds. Just converts fat ot muscle. You need to get out and sweat. Try Bikram Yoga (hot yoga). You'll sweat a ton and get to check out granola chicks covered in hair and sweat!

I'm down to 190-200 from 280, took me two years. Not just to get the weight off, but to get that low, and the fact I just put 275 up on flat bench, and taught 4 Spinning classes last week. Lots of people ask me how... Diet and exercise is always my answer. No quick fix...

Muscles dictate metabolism. Lazy menopausal women on ellipticals like hamsters EVERY day at the gym making zero progress prove this. Not saying you have to get huge to lose weight, but resistance training definitely will help things a great deal.

Good point and I agree. 280lb dude dirkmcgirk already has plenty of muscle, he has to haul around all that fat everyday! I couldn't imagine carrying an 80lb backpack everywhere I went. If he maintained his muscle mass for hauling that weight around but dropped the extra weight he could ride porc rim without a shuttle.

While strength training is essential to a well rounded exercise program, it cannot meet or take the place of cardiovascular workouts, especially when the goal is weight loss. Regular cardio changes brain chemistry and helps stave off the feeling of hunger while increasing feelings of well being. Interval (short high intensity bursts between prolonged lower intensity) cardio is the most effective. (Which is why soccer is better than straight running)

I'm 6'4" and 195lbs. I haven't stepped into a gym in YEARS. I have a rowing machine at home. I ride my MTB or hike 3-4 times a week. My average after work hike is 5 miles, ride is 9 miles. On the weekends, double the distances. In the winter I snowshoe and XC ski. The closest I get to weight training is pull-ups, push-ups and crunches/bicycle crunches/sit ups etc... The other half is my diet, no alcohol and plenty of sleep. I was raised by a dietician and also was a varsity collegiate athlete. I don't know much, but I do know how to take care of my body.

I'm still strong as an ox. Bench 280, squat around 400, dead lift around 350.

Never really stopped on the weights. If I was able to lift, I did. The collar bones and busted ribs slowed me down, but I can still lift a ton of weight. Rugby helped with that too, but I have come to conclude that I am too old and too beat to hell to keep playing like I did when I was 21 and in the Army.

and you probably have never been fat or tried to lose weight, it's much different then walking around thin like yourself or myself and maintaining it with cardio.



Further, NOTHING converts fat into muscle, NOTHING, you can build muscle, and you can burn fat, but you can NOT turn either one into the other.

Calories in, calories out, muscles use calories, fat stores calories. Weight training and cardio are not complete polar opposites, just lifting weights doesn't turn you into a body builder, just doing cardio doesn't turn you into a kenyan marathon runner.

cross training with weights, cardio, circuit training, biking, etc. will be effective.

I found a great app on my iphone actually. Its called Myfitnesspal, and its a damn accurate calorie counter. Its really helping. Shows me down to the mg what I am taking in, which lets me modify through out the day to fit what my body needs and how many calories I can take in. Its helped me drop down to 255 at this point. I think I can be down to 190 by NYE 2012 if I keep it up, keep running/riding/lifting, keep eating right.

Since we didn't have a winter the trails never froze and the snow was crap. Much of my fitness is gained from snow biking. By the time mud season begins I usually have some level of fitness. Not the case this year. The Road bike is coming out and all bets are off. Nothing gets you in shape better then doing 10 mile laps everyday. 22 if the ride day fells on a sunday.

I'll agree, it is hands down best to mix it up. 3 days of cardio (mix in some intervals) with 2 days of strength training, each workout 1 - 2 hours long. Add in a good daily stretching program and you are on your way.

Reduce caloric intake

Do things that make you sweat and pee alot.



So:

Stop eating so much sugar, eat more foods that contain fiber. You'll feel fuller and eat less calories. Carrots rock. So do bran muffins and oatmeal. Celery kicks all kinds of ass.

Drink a SH!T ton of water. Not all at once, just all damn day. Every day.

Do strenuous activities that make you sweat alot. (one of my favorites: ride fast on a hot day wearing a thick hoodie and sweat pants)

Went for a 25 mile day hike summiting two volcanos today. Suck it fat guys! :thumb: I kid.. but hiking is a great way to get in shape. Once you get going it doesn't even feel like you're working out! Until your legs feel like jelly walking home..

But you didn't say that.

AND there are plenty of medical journals and weight loss journals that suggest the metabolic increase lasts much longer from certain forms of workouts than it does from cardio. Further it also suggests you burn more calories in those weight and strength work outs, and, as you build muscle (I'm not suggesting become a bodybuilder, I am suggesting simply strengthen your current muscles and increase their appetite which can be done with out putting on muscular size) they will increase your metabolic rates, cardio is part of that, but you suggested cardio was all of that in your initial post.

Your mom was a dietician, my girlfriend of three years has a sports science degree, is a certified personal trainer (through multiple organizations) and her mother is a dietician. My dad can also beat up your dad lol

The truth is that lifting weights is more effective than cardio if you do it right.

First off, you should be stretching, then do a light cardio workout followed by an intense lifting workout. By intense I mean lots of reps with weight near your limit, finish off with a cardio cooldown.

Your metabolism will stay hi for a long time that way, ALOT longer than cardio alone, and you burn fat alot faster than cardio alone by a long shot.

Its not about replacing fat with muscle when your trying to drop pounds. Its not about getting big muscles...... Its about taking the muscle you already have and making it lean muscle. Lean muscle eats fat, and keeping lean muscle is easy.


ANother good way to go.... Cut calories of course, wake up do push ups, sit ups, use some cheap weight from walmart and do some curls, then 30 to 45 minutes of a jumprope, followed by a few more curls.

This is a joke. I guess it is what to expect when a bunch of bike freaks start giving any kind of advice. IMO, lifting is an unsustainable form of exercise. I equate it to inflating balloons. Your muscles get stronger and puff up, get all big, looks good in that popped collar. As soon as you stop lifting it deflates and then is gone. Cardio (a loose term to describe all kinds of sh*t that gets your heart rate up and sustains it for a minimum of 25 minutes) doesn't bulk up muscles but builds strong, lean base level strength that IMO, lasts longer and is easier to maintain not to mention bring back.

The bottom line is that it doesn't really matter what the plan is, as long as there is a plan and it involves ample exercise and a precise diet. The cardio vs strength training is case by case specific for the desired results. What works for you doesn't for him and only sometimes for me (for example). So rather than run around the rabbit hole with you for the next 12 hours I think I'll go ride my bike, maybe take the Mcleod and build some trail while I am at it.

I think you're generalizing between aerobic and anaerobic workouts. It's fairly well documented that true aerobic exercise causes you to loose muscle. This will cause an initial weight lose but reduce your ability to burn fat in the long run. By doing aerobic exercise, you are training your body to be more efficient. You are building a body that can do more work with less energy for a long period of time. This means you will burn fewer calories.
In order to burn fat, you need a muscular body that is inefficient so you will consume more energy. (ie fat)
Look at roadies and marathon runners. They good ones are wimps and have very little muscle mass.
As soon as they stop training 4+ hours a day, they put on instant fat.

whatever dude. I refuse to make this into a your right I'm wrong argument. I can share my opinions and stand behind them regardless of what Kickstand feels is more appropriate or accurate. I am trying to tell a dude that cardio is important, even more important than lifting weights all the time agreeing that a balanced exercise program is the best. I added in some of my opinions and philosophies, which are based in my experiences training and competing in varsity collegiate sports. It seems this whole time your agenda has been to tell me I'm an idiot. Thanks.

I have no agenda to tell you that you are an idiot, but your posts have not been correct. Regardless of if you were a collegiate athlete or not.

I will agree that cardio is important, and that mixing it up is important, but your philosophy that lifting weights and strength training is not important is flat out wrong.

Have you ever watched an episode of the biggest loser? Do they just run on treadmills and elipticals all day? No, they do functional training excersizes that build strength, elevate heart rate, and increase metabolic rates that will last well after their workouts.

Have you ever seen the weight lifting programs that athletes like michael phelps do on a daily basis? He doesn't just do cardio and swim, he also strength trains.

Have you ever seen the weight lifting programs for top BMX riders? What do you think top downhill pros do? Even the XC guys should be hitting the weights in the offf season.

Do you think Miguel Cabrera just lost 25 lbs to move from first to third by doing cardio all day?

I'll mention it again, my girlfriend is a personal trainer, one of her best clients has maintained over 3lbs per week average for the last year, yes, thats over 150lbs weight loss.....zero cardio machines, zero running, weight lifting, bodyweight excersizes, circuit training, etc. (I am sure the client did cardio on their own, but did NOT during the 3-5 appointments per week she spend with my girlfriend).

Cardio IS important, but it is NOT the only thing the original poster should be doing, he should be doing weight training as well, because like we already explained to you your muscles eat calories, working them out and making them hungry will increase your metabolism and allow your body to burn fat and lose weight.

For me, weightlifting is much more effective than cardio. I think to be in good shape overall you need to focus on improving your weaknesses. To lose weight and gain muscle tone, lifting or resistance type exercises trump any form of cardio training.

I never lift weights, in fact I don't go to the gym at all. Just ride your bike. And stop (not reduce, stop) drinking soda. That stuff is poison.

Ok I am going to say this simple...... Before giving any more advice on how one should or can get into shape, what works what doesnt Etc etc

Please actually talk to a professional trainer so you know what does work and what doesn't. Also so you know the truth about what lifting does, and different types of lifting.....


For one never did I say you need to be all bulkly looking with your popped collar...... Thats body building, I am talking about building lean muscle.... think more tone lifting.........


Just back out of the door on this one and let the fatties< truth is once a fatty always a fatty> who have actually gone, and found a need for dramatic Fat loss, and gone and done just that continue with the advice that works.


Your biggest mistake your making in your advice is clean, clear and simple. If you dont lift while dropping fat...... You will drop ALOT of weight fast.... You will lose muscle, in fact you will lose muscle fater than you lose the fat. This will end up making you a shrivled mess of a human with no strength and find yourself craving food..... ALOT of food. You will be hungry and you will end up putting it all back on again without the existing muscle you just lost.

If you want to lose weight properly, and keep it off you have to have a lifting regiment to go along with your cardio....... Specially when your someone who is already fat and trying to Drop the excess.....

I also was in sports, I also did well varsity blah blah etc etc.... and back then I did training on my own as well and thought I knew better..... Until the first time I found myself overweight and fat when I thought it was all about cardio, found myself short on muscle mass, muscle tone, energy strength, and took WAY too long to get the muscle back on and in the process the weight all came right back....... I sought the advice of a professional trainer and found out how bad just cardio was for losing weight.
