Marion Barry somehow continues to win re-election to his seat on the DC Council by large margins (74% of the vote in Tuesday's primary) via a dysfunctional Ward 8 electorate that seems to prop him up in order to stick it to "the man" and ensuring their part of the city remains DC's festering sore.

After the 2010 elections I resolved to only vote for Republicans for any city-wide office.

A Job Opening… If You Dare
The District of Columbia’s often-controversial and always-colorful “mayor-for-life” Marion Barry is hiring.
For $46,350 to $75,000 per year one brave soul can serve as the communications director for Barry, now a D.C. councilman.
Since Barry has been spokesman-free for months, his chief of staff Joyce Clements-Smith has had the tricky task of smoothing over Barry’s recent comment that the “dirty shops” run by Asians in his ward “ought to go” and his lamentation that the area’s clinics were hiring too many Filipino nurses.

WASHINGTON - D.C. Councilmember Marion Barry says he misspoke when he referred to the Polish community with the disparaging term "Polacks."

Barry made the remark when he was meeting with Asian-Americans. That meeting was set up after Barry made two offensive statements last month about Asians. He later apologized.

Barry was asked Thursday about racial tensions in the United States and he said: "The Irish caught hell, the Jews caught hell, the Polacks caught hell."

In a seven-word statement Friday, Barry says he misspoke and should have said Polish.

Gary Kenzer is the executive director of the Chicago-based Polish American Association. He has called on Barry to apologize to the Polish-American community.

rising sun has set: D.C. orders ‘Dirty Asian’ punch off bar’s menu
Walk into The Pug today, and you can order a beer or a shot, but you can no longer order “Marion Berry’s Dirty Asian Summer Punch.”

The punch, a fruity vodka concoction, was whipped up by the H Street NE bar’s owner, Tony Tomelden, as an admittedly crude but satirical tribute to D.C. Council member Marion Barry’s controversial comments this year criticizing Asian shop owners and Filipino nurses. “The Ward 8 Special,” he called it.

“I put it up there for a reason,” Tomelden said. “He gets away with this stuff continuously.”

There’s more: Drawn on a chalkboard behind the bar was an advertisement for the punch featuring an Asian caricature — bald, with slanted eyes and buck teeth. “No tickee, no punchee,” the sign says

H St. is the new Adams Morgan. The gentrification train left that station years ago. The streetscape there looks entirely different (read nice) as of this year with the construction of the new street car islands and bikeshare stations.
