It's very good. I think this beer is a bit over rated too but that is because there is so much hype surrounding it. Pliny is all about the hops and the hop flavors are complex like a good vindaloo or mole.
I had a mini tasting with the Pliny, 90 Minute and a DIPA from Boneyard Brewing called Hop Venom. I think the hop venom is slightly better. It has a similar initial hop presence but more malt flavors develop. The 90 minute paled in comparison. I also like the Pliny better than other favorites such as Yulesmith or Double Jack.
Yeah, hyped beers can do that.
Having said that, if 90 Min paled in comparison and you liked it better than Yulesmith, I should start looking for it.
To be honest, I'm not sure how Pliny the Elder makes it into the IIPA/DIPA category. I would personally categorize it as a straight-up IPA. And it's quite good. Although quite expensive...
Also, the first Pliny I tried was completely unimpressive... but the second one I tried, and the clone recipe that I made, were awesome.

Picked up some North Coast Brewing "Old Stock Ale" on sale. Yum. Almost as good out of the bottle as on tap.
Del fin del mundo malbec. Really tasty. And $9/btl to boot. Win!

I suppose I should specify: the freshness matters even more than most IPAs I've had out of the bottle.
Though I did find a bottle of homebrew in the back of the closet a few months ago that was a 2 year old IPA, and wasn't bad at all...

Been hitting it pretty hard post race. Spent the afternoon post race at Four Peaks brewing. Hop Knot IPA = teh awesome. Tacos and Margaritas @ Fuego for dinner, also teh awesome. Now back at the hotel with these:

Not trying to be all bad ass but I have been drinking about two Pliny's a month for about a year and I believe Oskar Blues Gubna destroys it on all levels. That Hop Juice stuff is not bad.
