Fvcking scary. I've climbed Tunnel road sooo many times. Most of that section has plenty of room but it's also a commute route that home bound drivers take to get to hwy 13 and 24, and these are bay area drivers we're talking about - the worst in the country.

They are lucky it didn't happen farther up the hill as they were merging to continue up Tunnel and drivers are gunning it onto the entrance to 13. They would have been splattered.

Looks like a texting fvck up to me. I hope the driver gets roasted in court.

BTW - that is one route to some of the trails in the Berkeley/Oakland hills, so it could just have easily been mountain bikers. It could have easily been someone from RM.

I see cars barely slow around here before they blow thru stop signs and lights.

Considering the income of a lot of roadies, I bet a lot more than any of those fools.

Fvck you, and ...
fvck you too.

I ride the road all the time. Am I people?
Thanks for getting that out! I also ride road all the time, on my freaking MTB! So I guess technically I'm a roadie. It takes a little more balls to ride road then it does just dirt, so screw em!

It looks like someone handy with video editing software could pull at least a partial plate number from that video. Who films a road ride though..? What were they expecting to happen? That careless driver scored them thousands of extra hits on youtube! :thumb:

But “Bruno” said on his YouTube page that police were able to identify the license plate of the car and have already made contact with the driver.

“The police have located the car and the owner,” he wrote. “Now I’m waiting for the return of the police on the case.”

Given my personal history, I realize I'm probably a bit hypersensitive about being hit by a car, but I've been thinking about this, and I don't really think it's something we should joke about. Even if they are "just roadies". Quite frankly I think its a tad disgusting that on a biking website people are willing to make that joke, even bikers who ride "exclusively" on dirt. Road riders, of which I also happen to be one, are a part of the larger cycling community, what happens to them, and the perception of them, effects us all. If cagers don't give two sh*ts about roadies, what on earth makes you think that the average cager is going to be even the slightest concerned about the smaller subset of cyclist, the mountain biker? Trail advocacy or trail access can be effected by any number of car enslaved voters who haven't been on a bike since they turned 16. Especially when the attitude among a certain population of the mountain bike community is that they deserved to be run down like dogs. Both of those guys are extremely lucky. I realize that things were said in jest, and don't really believe that anything was said in all seriousness, but I still find it appalling.

Sure, its ok to make fun of the mentally retarted, diseased, addicts, religious people and whatever might make the news.
But when it comes to something thats up in someones personal experiance its a no no...

I think its healthy to make fun of all things, helps you put things in perspective.
People who dont agree better learn to deal with it or stay away from the internet.

It's scary stuff for sure. I ride tunnel fairly frequently in the summer. A buddy of mine who rides mtb and road lives on that route and rides that road all the time. His house is in the video.

The really scary part is that at that particular spot, there is plenty of road and a wide bike lane. For much of the riding out there, there is no bike lane and the road is much more narrow and twisty.

And of course it's ok to joke about roadies, especially if you are or were one. Look up Mike Ferrentino's essay on the never-ending **** gift, and lighten up.

I have no idea where I am
My Mom used to ride road, but when her riding partner was struck from behind and killed less than two miles from her home, she stopped riding. My Dad, who is now 74, still rides road and being unable to drive due to a disability commutes as well.

The thought of a malicious/careless driver hitting him or any other rider makes my fvckig blood boil. And when I hear non riders complain about being inconvenienced by a cyclist It takes great restraint to not rip into them. Sometimes I do.

I agree with Pesqueeb on this one. Joking about another rider being hit by a car is inexcusable and down right shameful.

And in case you were wondering, I too have been hit by a car. So shut the fvck up because it could just as easily happen to you or someone you care about.

I really hope they use the camera just for evidence, how boring would it be to watch an hour footage of road riding from a single camera position?
Road riders are fine but the wankers that ride like they are on closed roads deserve to get hit, I'd never own a road bike as I hate annoying motorists so I stay off the road wherever possible, 2.1" slicks let you hop gutters and stay out of harms way, well, unless people aim for you.

Know what the mountain bike equivalent of this is? If you're cock blocking me on a trail somewhere its okay for me to suggest you should go OTB and break your neck? I can only imagine the outrage that would be expressed here if some jackass on a road bike forum suggested that Mandown "got what he deserved" for some perceived slight.

???? Not sure where you live, but here in WI if the lane is too narrow to have a bicycle and a car fit in it (with 3' of clearance), the cyclist is SUPPOSED to take up the full lane.

http://www.dot.wisconsin.gov/safety/vehicle/bicycle/rules.htm

Wisconsin DOT said:
Narrow lanes
Ride in the center of the lane.
Keep at least three feet between yourself and passing or parked traffic.

Wide lanes
Ride just to the right of the actual traffic line, not alongside the curb.
Keep at least three feet between yourself and the curb or from parked vehicles. Motorists should be passing you with at least 3 feet of clearance.
No, I don't "own the road", I get to use it just like any other vehicle. By the way, I'd love to see you try my wife's commute of 25 miles round trip every day on a mountain bike with 2.1" slick tires, all while avoiding roads...

Yeah yeah boo hoo, wipe the sand from your lady bits before you get any grumpier.

I understand that there are sections of road that are dangerous and riders need to use the whole road, and yes this is legal where I live. However if a car is driven on the road well below the speed limit they will be ticketed as it is deemed as unsafe and I see no reason a bike should be allowed a whole lane if they can't keep with the road speed.

Yeah, call me all the names you want I'm really not bothered, if I know a section of road is unsafe to ride I find a different way or drive if there is no alternate route, I apologize if thinking of motorists before myself makes me a dick.

Also I have been hit by a car, and no it wasn't my fault, do I have a thread about it or is my vag sandy because someone made a mistake? No.

I have been banned from another bike forum for forgetting that many forum members are perfect in every way.

Maybe, uh, you should look up the law and you'd see exactly why bicycles won't be ticketed under that situation...

I use my bike as a form of transportation on roads that **I** pay for through property, sales and income taxes. I try to reduce my time on roads like that (and the one I primarily use where I take up the whole lane is 2 lanes in each direction, allowing cars to pass me), but if motorists don't want me taking up the safe center of the lane as I'm instructed to do by the WIDOT, maybe they should lobby their city to put in a bike lane. Every time I try to ride as far right as possible on that road, I'm reminded exactly why it's safer to ride in the center as some idiot will try to *squeeze* past me without changing lanes.

I don't think cyclists should purposely block traffic or take up a whole lane on winding mountain roads with no opportunities to pass, but I certainly think that they should be allowed to do so if it's necessary for their safety.

Dang, I know that spot. Loved riding in the Berkeley/Oakland hills. I'm glad they got the guy and nobody was seriously hurt. It could have been really bad if it happened near one of those parked cars.

I wish there was an easy solution to making car + bike traffic on the same roads safer. Looking forward to cars that drive themselves.

Geez, I'd almost feel bad about the massive head trauma you obviously sustained, but you got in the way of a motorist, so you obviously deserved it.

This is pretty weird. Is there something inherently unsafe about the roads near you? I'm guessing not. Most of the time, it's motorists that make the roads unsafe. Especially when they have an inflated sense of entitlement like you.

Yesterday, I rode my mountain bike to the trailhead, a 20% climb from sea level to 500 feet. I was on the edge of a very tight road and I could hear a car behind me about to try to pass. I started waving because around the bend, I could see another car coming downhill which the driver behind me could not, and I and the two cars were about to meet at the same time and place in a horrific crash.

With your logic, I shouldn't be on the road. How about this: there were 25 cars parked at the trailhead. Imagine if those lazy b****** rode a bike instead of driving?

This is one of those matters which I get criticized for doing something good, which is riding instead of driving, but there is no criticism of drivers even though the idea of driving to get some exercise is ridiculous.
