Damn that is a fun trail. After it destroyed my collarbone the first go around I finally had my chance at redemption. Definitely worth the drive and regardless what discipline of riding your into, you'll like it. Excellent work to those who put there time in.

Can't agree more. Between that place and Beech Mountain, the High Country has finally got it going on (officially).

Gonna be nice when Beech opens for business
Heither and I are going Monday after Nationals. Looking forward to it.
Your gonna dig it, well thought out with everyone in mind. Really nice addition compared to others is the little skills areas "about" half way up. Both are less than 30 seconds but fun to loop over and over.

Still have not completed the jump trail without a flat.. Made it about halfway down yesterday flatted in that rocky section and hiked the rest, then this morning I crashed messing around on the top of the intermediate trail and flatted. Awesome trail though. Super fast and flowy. Gonna try it again this afternoon if it dries back out

3 for 3 on flat tires.. Made it a little over halfway down this afternoon. At this rate I'll make it to the bottom after I go through about 3 more tubes. Probably going to take the DH bike out there in the next couple days and see if that helps

There has to be a fundamental flaw in your tire choice or the tire pressure you are running. Flatting that often on a trail that smooth just shouldn't happen.

The last time I was flatting that much turned out my rear shock was wore slap out. Fresh rebuild and flatting went away. But I do suggest looking at some other component i.e. rim, rim strip, tire, rear shock, etc. Unless you are running XC race tires that many flats is a telling sign of something else.

Tubeless? If you are running tubes check for thorns, metal, etc in your tire. Make sure your rim strip has not shifted exposing nipple holes.

Do small block 8's count as xc race tires? :)

And I've been riding my hardtail like it's my DH bike lately so that probably doesn't help either

It's big pinch flats every time. I check the rim and tire every time I put a new tube in though.

Whoa, whoa...

Did you say hardtail? I'm not sure what the casing on small block 8s is like but that plus the hardtail could definitely be your problem. I could NOT get out of the parking lot without a flat on that setup.

I don't even case anything! Its the stupid rocks sticking out of the ground everywhere that get me every time. And I used to ride pretty smooth but the more I ride DH the more I just blast over everything which doesn't work well on a hardtail

I made a conscious decision a few years back to always have a trail bike setup in similar fashion to my DH bike. I tried to always run a hardtail, but more often than not, I'd get in deep doo doo riding it like a full squish. I CANNOT ride a hardtail without multiple tank slappers.

sstalder tubeless would help your issue. Even on the jump trail their are several square edge rocks that will get you. Kendas aren't known for their sidewall protection.

Rode there yesterday with Geritt and we had a great time. I thought it was a great mix of technical with some fun flowy stuff. I was worried it have too much of a man made feel, but I was wrong. It really is more rocky and than bermy. In fact I only remember a few berms not on PBJ and all felt right for their place in the trail. PBJ was a lot of fun for a trail bike and warranted a few runs. The climbing was reasonable and not bad for the elevation you get to enjoy going down. One thing does remain however, I suck as skinny wood.

It's like paper with a very thin layer of rubber on top.
That.

I finally got a few runs in without flatting ...on my DH bike. And then I flatted.. The only explanation left is that I'm related to Bizutch. I love the trail though. I should be up there a few days a week until I run out of money for tubes :thumb:

Also, if anyone finds a bright orange chain roller on PBJ its mine. It must have fallen off on the trail today.

I'm assuming you're flatting your rear tire...if so tubeless will help. I'm pretty sure you're flatting on 1 of 5 big square edged rocks on PBJ so you'll still be burping a decent amount of air out of your rear tire every run. Your best bet is to get some tires with tougher sidewalls and some thicker tubes.

I run tubeless and I rolled my rear tire off the rim twice on two successive runs down PBJ in the berms. At speed those berms mean business.

Is there a shorter way to hike your DH bike up than following the main entrance/trail?

I'm sure you're right about the square edged rocks. I like the idea of tubeless but I really don't think I'll have good luck with it. And when I flatted yesterday it was a Minion DHR with a DH tube. Idk how much thicker than that I could go. I'm going to try the hardtail with sb8s and a DH tube in the rear today and see how that goes.

Yeah. There's a trail at the very end of the parking lot behind the new playground that runs up to the right of way access road that'll take you straight to the top of PBJ.

I weigh 225 with gear and bulldoze when I ride, I've yet to have a problem running tubeless on my AM. I think you would be surprised how well it holds up.

Its on the east side of Boone, if my internal compass works right.

No shuttles. Human power only. That is what makes that place so awesome. Well that and the rocks and jumps.
