With no swell and rainy weather there is not much surfing happening locally. However, the abalone season starts in about two weeks, which means gazillions of people in the water at 8am.

My housemate just told me that he had read about the latest incident before they released a name, realized he hadn't seen me for a few days, and started to worry. Weirdly, that was a common reaction among people I know.

And Kev, South Australia also has a rep for sharky waters...but probably still better to contend with sharks in the water than crocs or jellyfish.

In a related aside.
THE City of Busselton is running low on shark warning signs because of the number that have been stolen from local beaches.
It is a problem that has become endemic to the region, with signs warning that a beach has been closed because of a shark sighting also being stolen from beaches in neighbouring shires.

Now I must admit one of these of signs would be the piece de resistance of your man cave but it's pretty low to steal one. Probably they should just send that ranger to the beach to keep people out of the water. Scares me more than the sharks, that's for sure.

Riding the baggage carousel.
A shark attack near Wedge Island is believed to be fatal, police have reported.
Details of the attack, which occurred a short time ago, are not yet known but it is believed the victim was a male surfer, and suffered extensive injuries.
 That can't be good news.

Haven't been out on a board at the closest surfable (sometimes) beach since this happened: http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/a/-/wa/13991272/mullaloo-shark-attack-like-an-explosion/

I was in the water snorkeling around (elsewhere), checking out a bit of reef when a chopper went over. Thought it was a bit unusual. Saw the news about the surfer at Wedge posted on a fishing board before it hit the mainstream news outlets. The account from the guy on the jetski is pretty horrifying.

Also, though it was north quite a ways, there was this. Video is worth checking out. F that!

Another one, unbelievable.
The Fisheries Department has issued an imminent threat order after a fatal shark attack at Gracetown, 270km south of Perth, on Saturday morning.
Police were called at 9.10am regarding a shark attack near the car park at the end of Lefthanders Road.
St Johns Ambulance personnel and police attended the scene and found the dead man, believed to be in his early 20s.
Police said his injuries were consistent with those received in a shark attack and witnesses said the man's arm was missing and that he was dead when he was dragged from the water.

Me and the boy were on this beach a year or so ago, there's a plaque for a surfer taken there in 2004.

Not a fatal, for the human at least, but a fairly horrifying attack. Bunbury is where Partsbara is from. Must give the old creaser a ring.
Bunbury man Sean Pollard suffered devastating injuries, including the loss of both arms, while he surfed 150 metres offshore at the surfbreak at Kelp Beds Beach in Wylie Bay at 11am. He is believed to have been with his girlfriend when the shark struck.

And a timeline that I found interesting. Long list.
October 2, 2014:

23-year-old Sean Pollard had an arm and another hand bitten off by a shark while surfing at Wylie Bay in Esperance.

Pretty shit really.
Imagine it from the shark's perspective.

"Tried grabbing a bite to eat off off XXX beach. Thought I found a tasty seal but it ended up being some stringy bony white person, spat the shit out, would not eat again. :stosh:. Almost as bad as when I picked up a date of the coast of Thailand and she ended up having claspers tucked underneath her pelvic fin."

They're so commonplace now they have to be really good to make this thread.
A swimmer has died from “catastrophic injuries” after being attacked by a shark off a beach in Sydney’s south-east.
Emergency services were called to Buchan Point in Malabar, off Little Bay Beach, about 4.35pm on Wednesday following reports a swimmer had been attacked by a shark.

Marine police crews and surf lifesavers scoured the scene, according to a New South Wales police statement, and “located human remains in the water”. The death is the first fatal unprovoked shark attack in Sydney since 1963.
