I need a recent news article to write a "current event" on. Must have something to do with international relations but can be any topic. Must be SFW. I'll write about the first article posted that meets the criteria no matter what it is. GO!

Haha not so fast there. I used to work for Thomson Reuters. We used to make up chit all the time. I would check those numbers, we used to plagiarize most all of our reported Statistics from the CIA Fact book. A dubious source if there ever was one.....

The recent maple syrup heist in Canada. It has the the criteria. It is SFW. It is current. It involves the theft of millions of dollars syrup, and the related insurance issues. It involves the untraceable nature of the product on the black market, and the impact that has on the Asian markets where the product is relatively unfamiliar to many consumers.

Argentine president is preventing the removal of money/assets from the country and has made it illegal for anybody other than the government to publish inflation statistics. This looks to be a repeat of the collapse of the Argentine Peso in the 90's.

This would make a fantastic paper. I second this.

Late last week near Quebec City, Canada, it was discovered that some of the Global Strategic Maple Syrup Reserve was stolen. The warehouse involved contained about 10 million pounds of syrup, about 25% of the reserve, worth over $30 million. It is still unknown how much has been taken, but the value is estimated to be in the millions. The syrup was transferred into other containers leaving only empty barrels behind. According to the director of the Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers, a volume of stolen syrup this large could be very harmful to legitimate maple syrup producers. They cannot compete with the prices this ‘black market syrup’ because it has not been paid for.
This article is a good example of how something seemingly insignificant can make a big impact on the global market. The maple syrup reserve may not seem as important as the gold reserve at Fort Knox, but I believe it is. In the past decade, the price of maple syrup has increased by over 70% due to bad production seasons. The Federation has actually begun to tap into the reserve in the past few years to keep up with demand. And higher prices in Canada are amplified for the rest of the world due to tariffs and other taxes on the product. A gallon of maple syrup which would have been $30-$40 for a low grade is now worth upwards of $70. Considering millions of pounds of that syrup will be sold at a considerably lower price on the black market this year, the smaller legitimate producers are going to take a big hit if the perpetrators are not found.
It's pretty bad since I wrote it in 10 mins this morning so I could go ride, but it should be good enough since it is just for a gen ed pol sci class.
