I don't see myself retiring from DH for 5-7 years,so you may want to reconsider your self imposed exile from the joy that is me.

im loving the carbon ceramic discs on my motorcycle . its nice to save weight but i was all over the longevity rating .

Its funny that there is always so much hate against "potential" progress in the biking industry. It reminds me of the days when everyone was railing against carbon DH bikes which are now superlight and not much more expensive than the alu versions (although both are way too pricey IMO).

You won't find me shelling out a lot of dough for rotors, but there are potential advantages (more consistent braking power, no fade, less weight, etc.), all of which are good for DH. There are also potential downsides (possibly requiring some degree of warm-up and durability). And, like most new things, they will cost more than the current metal designs. So, why not see where this ends up?

On a side note, I was surprised that, according to a rider that I was working with, the carbon brakes used in MotoGP are not all that much more powerful than steel brakes, just a lot more consistent.

The price difference isn't that much, $40-$50 more per rotor. That's cheap compared to the price difference between aluminum and carbon rims, cranks, frames, ect. Weight weenies look at dollars per gram saved. At 1:1 this is a cheap weight drop and has the potential for increased performance.

LOL who buys rotors at retail? If a $120 per side rotor doesn't scare you, then I'm in the wrong sport! You can get brand new hayes v8s for $20.

I'm comparing MSRP to MSRP. Formula The One rotors are like $45. Shimano Saint are the same. I thought these 2 carbon rotors are $80 and $100. Yeah we're talking double the price but it's small potatoes compaired to what people spend to upgrade from a coil Boxxer to air, aluminum frame to carbon, or alloy rim to carbon. The promise of improved performance moves it beyond a mere weight reduction upgrade.

$200 gets you one 203 and one 180, and that's kickstarter prices.

but you're right, if you're comparing retail to retail then it's not that expensive...but you can get a variety of really good rotors for $20-40, and you'll never get these for any less than retail. Add to that the weight savings are questionable when the rotor hits 203. I see a 140mm rotor weighed (somehow on its edge) @ 45g...weight weenies has 140mm rotors listed @ 66 and 86g. So, you're saving 20-40g for $50 more. The weight savings could be quite large when it goes up to 203mm, but it might not be. I see these in the same light as the unpadded carbon fiber saddle, the spindle carbon cage chainguide, and the 28lb session. Really good for bragging to your friends about.

Not sure why people are going on about the weight savings, it's the high temperature performance that's the interesting bit, **** the weight.
