Does anybody make a mini pump that is convertible to shock pump use? Sounds like a no-brainer that would save some weight in the backpack.

Don't believe so. Too much difference in the pressure ranges required for each application.
Specialized makes one, I'm on my second one (I ruined the head on the other after about 4 years) and it's rad. Doesn't cost much more than a regular shock pump if I remember right.

I know the pressure ranges are different, but when you have the computing power of six-floors worth of 1950's era computing technology in your hand, I can't imagine nobody would have figured out how to make a rotating barrel'ed pump.

and Sandwich, you'll probably appreciate this- on the old one, I took it to the dealer for a new head, but they didn't have them so they gave me a new version for dirt cheap instead. So later I machined a fitting to adapt the head off of a CO2 pump, and got the old one working perfectly again. Gave it to a buddy and stuff. 
yeah, I'm suprised other companies don't make them like this.
Nice. I love things that work right. I want to get the head-tube mini tool that cannondale had for their lefty forks. Those things were so damn convenient and they had everything you needed for a bike. Chain break, tire levers, patches, etc.

It's funny to see that I carry just about everything in that article in my pack. I used to be the grommet with about 16oz of water and nothing else, relying on my older buddies with the 20 pound backpack. Now I am the guy with the 20 pound backpack and the gut to go with it.
So yeah, integrating things and lighter/smaller is good!

I've got one of the Specialized ones, and it works, kinda'. Not great in either mode, but does work at least. IMO, works better as a shock pump than a tire pump. Even have taken the trouble to clean/re-grease/re-o-ring/tighten everything up - didn't make much difference.
It only goes in the small pack, when rides are short/not far from home or car. Bigger or rarther afield rides, separate ones come along.
