ODI/Troy Lee grips, hand pain?

Has anyone experienced hand pain with these grips on their downhill bike? How do you set up the flange orientation in terms of roll? They seem to get good reviews from the magazines, but this is the first grip I've ever purchased that does not play nice and causes some pretty serious cramping. I'll admit my crap avid brakes aren't helping in the hand fatigue department, but the previous specialized grips I had were much better. I have fairly large mitts and it seems as if these ODI grips are not long enough between the inner and outer flange. Curious to hear what others think? Would also be interested in changing to a larger diameter grip if anyone has recommendations.

No, I have these on TR450 in red. Had them at Platty for a day, opening weekend at creek, then a full weekend of racing in Duryea pennsylvania. I have zero pain and really love them. I am wearing roal Racing gloves with them, and expierence only great love for the grips!

i went to these grips from ruffians and sunline thins and love them. they are a bit softer than either of those which normally does cause me a bit of hand fatigue but after 2 or 3 rides it wasn't an issue.

i've been running them with the largest flange inboard, facing up and perpendicular to the ground for months, but may try spinning them 180* to get that small outer flange up top. i like to push my hands outward and have a little something there to press against and keep my hands from sliding off the end. i'm riding gloveless on my trail bike but they work great with 661, royal and fox gloves as well.

Do you have larger hands? How do you have the flanges oriented on your bars? I'm willing to give them one more go if my setup is off, but if I can't get it resolved I'll just have to concede and go to a different grip.

I just recently switched to them from Peaty's and love them. My hands are large too.
I set them up the same way they appear in the photos on their website, inside flange up, outter flange down.
No problems at all and I appreciate the extra cushion they have compared to the Peaty's.

Troy Lee ODI's on big bike and little bike... Outside flanges down. Everyone's hands are different, but they work great with mine.

Ruffians were always a bit too small for me, and Rogues were too fat. These (also Peaty's) strike a good middle ground for me concerning diameter. Saying that, I think current MTB lock-ons are still too narrow. I've never had a problem, I just think there's no reason to have grips as narrow as they usually are...

I wear a medium sized glove, so no I do not have bigfoot proportioned size hands. Im not sure about the flanges without the bike being in front of me. I would need to check

I don't have huge hands (traditionally prefer ODI Ruffians) and I haven't had any issues with the TLD grips. I have them positioned with the inside flanges up and back (so it sits in the pocket between my thumb and forefinger) and the outer flange down and forward (so the bottom of my pinky pushes against it). Pic for reference.

Ok, so checked out the grip orientation and they appear to be in line with most of ODI's pics of the grip. I do find it a little curious that there isn't a setup guide, but oh well. One thing I did notice was that the grips have a slight taper on each end leading up to the half'ish flange feature and that the taper is most pronounced opposite the flange side. With most every other grip, the profile is just one nominal diameter.

With my current brake lever/shifter setup and with 'normal' grips, my hands sit all the way on the very end of the handlebars and grip. However, with the ODI/Troy Lee grips, the effective width of the grip where the diameter is constant is reduced a good bit. With the the outside flange pointing downward per ODI's pics, the meaty outer part of my palm sits on the raised taper, which by my estimation is probably neither ergonomic nor good for hand fatigue. I'm going to push in my trigger and brake levers further in to see if I can get my hands more inboard so that the crook of my hands lay beside the inner flange and the outside of my hand away from the tapered hot spot. Overall, I'm a little disappointed with design from a functionality perspective. They definitely look the piece, but I wonder if these grips have a case of Crank Brotheritis. Hopefully updating the cockpit layout will work.

If your getting sore hands with those, they may be too thin. I used to get sore hands with Ruffians, then switched to rouges and it's much better.

are rogues compatible w/ XL hands? i currently prefer the cheap oury mtn grips for their size, b/c anything smaller are rather uncomfortable.

Yes, they're similar size, but not as soft, as the ourys due to plastic inner sleeve/thinner rubber.
I wear XL gloves but ride ruffians though as the rogues are too fat, for me.

I'm 6'8" with size 12/13 (XXL) gloves - I find that pretty much only the Oury (square blocks) and the Rogues work for me; the Rogues are a tiny bit fatter than the Oury's.

Depending what you mean by XL (Glove wise XL is ~11) they may be good; seems they were the standard forever and then other grips came out, but us big paws stuck with em.

EDIT: They = Rogues

Always keep in mind that with the lock on grips, the outer, exposed pattern out of the box is hard, slick and rather rigid. They quite literally break in though and develop more flex and tackiness shortly. They become softer and eaiser on the hands, but only for medium to small hands with the TLD and Ruffians.

My favorite all time is the Cane Creek pattern. The first week, I hated them and then they did the above and once they soften, have fantastic grip and comfort. Second place all time is the Intense grip with inner flange. I'm running the TLD's right now and they have not softened as much.

Some scientist correct me, but wouldn't it be because of the neon yellow pigment making them more rigid because to add pigment and color, you're removing malleable rubber compound and the rubber gets more rigid?

I'd run ODI Rogue's if you have big hands, but they take a LONG time to soften up. Mine took something like a month to...and they were too big for my T-Rex claws.

Since we are talking odi grips, have any of you guys ever had a pair superglue themselves to your bar?
I put a pair of Rogue grips (which I hate) on back in the spring because I was getting over a broken hand.
When I tried to take them off recently, they were totally stuck. You can even remove the lock on's and the grip itself will not budge. I had to take a screwdriver and hammer it under the grip to finally get it to break loose, then sand all the grey crap off my bar.
Anyway, the SDG lock on grips feel great and they are my favorite now. And I agree with Butch about the Cane creek grips as I had the same experience. Hated them at first, but once they break in they are great and I loved the grip that they provide.

Nope, that sounds awful though.

Rogues or Oury's are good for fat mits.

Ruffians for smaller hands. Intenses are somewhere in between (I love them).

I had really good experience with my RavX grips. There's nothing special about their clamping system nor pattern, but they use a half-core design rather than the full plastic tube. It allows more rubber between your hand and the bar, which reduces trail chatter/resonance like a carbon bit might. Mostly it just makes my hands more comfortable.

I know this is a resurrect, but most of my hand pain went away with decent brakes and a fork that absorbed bumps. I can't begin to say how bad my 2010 boxxer was, switching to a newer one and then a marzocchi was a world of difference. Hand pain reduced, small bump sensitivity went through the roof.

I havent ever really ever liked ODI grips.
Had ruffians and hated them from day 1.
Then went to super fat/soft sunlines and they were great except in winter when they were super slippery.
Lately I have been using AME lockons and they are amazing.
Better grip than the sunlines but just as soft but far better wearing.
They are the bees knees for my fat mitts.

These ones to be precise.

I do however use the ODI SDG grips on my AM bike and they are real nice even when running bareback/gloveless.

How does the thickness of those AMEs compare to Rogues/Oury's?

I love me some of these ProGrip 714s on my motos:

Unsure what they are like compared to Ourys or rogues as I havent used them.
A friend used Ourys and from memory the AMEs arent as fat but my word they're comfortable tho.
