for the other gamers here, the PS4 was announced a bit ago. its a bit of a bummer that it wont be backwards compatible with PS3 games

The PS4 is still very much a PC in terms of guts: an x86 processor, a combined CPU/GPU, (we're not sure of exactly which one), and 8 GB of unified GDDR5 memory (versus the PS3's 512 megabytes). And for those of you who worry about storage—don't, as the PS4 will have a local HDD....

There's also very impressive stuff going on in the background—games will be "instantly" bootable from sleep, and a secondary processor will handle downloading games in the background, giving you the ability to actually play games while they're being transferred from Sony's servers to your PS4.

Looks cool but probably wont be running out to buy one. I barely use my PS3 for gaming since my son was born this past summer.

Isn't Toshi completely untouchable when it comes to this?

Why does anyone else even bother?
I was dethroned late in my GT5 series, then people gradually lost interest. Then I lost interest myself and sold GT5 + my fancy driving wheel.

Nowadays our Wii just collects dust, and the PS3's sole purpose is streaming Netflix or Amazon Prime Instant Video. The only games, per se, that I've played recently are my third playthroughs of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas.

I thought I watched a part of the live stream where they talked about it being able to run everything down to PS1 stuff...? It was toward the beginning before all the developers came out.

"Drive Club" looks pretty good.

just not the actual discs you already have:
Some bad news: no native PS3 backwards compatibility. But! You'll have PlayStation Cloud, permitting streaming access to old titles without the need for discs. Sony is frustratingly mum on how PlayStation Cloud will actually work, though.
dont know how theyll be able to verify if someone actually has the original disc to be able to access the cloud based games. and that would have to be one hell of a network to support all those games streaming to millions of people.

Ah yes. That's what I remember now... Luckily, my library is small.

So..... PC architecture, X86 (PC) CPU, PC GPU, 8GB RAM and a hard drive.

Something about that entire combination sounds so familiar, if I could just put my finger on it. Maybe I should stop typing on this keyboard I have connected to a large black box under my desk I could figure it out.

Ok, sarcasm aside, I'm actually thankful that at last it seems like the PS4 and Xbox720 (whatever) are finally adapting most of the general PC architecture, CPU/GPU/APU, and things like DX11. It'll mean that cross-platforming gaming will be MUCH easier, and hopefully PC ports of console games won't be utterly nerfed anymore. When the PS3/360 were in development the biggest sellers on the PS2/Xbox were console exclusives, so MSFT/Sony pretty much did their own thing. Now the biggest sellers are cross-platform games like CoD, and programming for 3 (4) different platforms is an utter nightmare.

Now the biggest question is cost...

yeah i saw $429 and $529. another stupid thing was that they might omit a optical audio output. that would suck for a lot of people who dont have a receiver with HDMI inputs...like me

phew
A press release reveals that the PS4's PC-like configuration will include an 8-core 64-bit x86 "Jaguar" CPU built by AMD, with a Radeon GPU comprised of 18 "compute units" capable of cranking out 1.84 TFLOPS to process graphics and more. Its Blu-ray drive -- yes, it will still have one of those -- spins at a brisk 6X (8X for DVDs) and as mentioned on stage, it packs 8GB of unified GDDR5 RAM capable of 176GB/sec of bandwidth. 802.11n WiFi, USB 3.0, Bluetooth 2.1, HDMI, optical out and even a legacy analog AV out make up the inputs and outputs, although the potential amounts of storage are still unspecified.
now hopefully they figure out how the owners of the soon-to-be "legacy" games will be able to play their $60 games

dante - rumors on cost i've heard are less than the ps3 at launch (the number i saw was $400)

For price, I'd be shocked if they have anything set in stone yet considering the Yen's roller coaster the past few months. The US might be insulated from this a bit since I'm assuming they're all going to be made in China (kinda pegged to the dollar), but I'd bet that Sony's going to wait to see how things look over the summer before releasing anything definite.

For HDMI, put me down as another who doesn't have an HDMI-capable receiver, although it's doubtful I'll be picking up a PS4 anyway. Built a desktop last summer that has suited me just fine, and nothing in the preview last night was so groundbreaking that it'd be worth dropping the $500 (and more expensive games) on it. I did like the online integration of it, though, including being able to watch your friend's playing and jump in as needed.

Will be interesting to see what the 720 offers when it's announced.

generally i dont put a whole lot of credit into rumors, but i'd say there might be something to these numbers considering the amount of negative feedback sony got over the launch price of the ps3

those people who complain would bitch about anything. you pretty much got a top of line BD player and a gaming console. in 2006 when it came out, you couldnt get a quality BD player for the same price.
