The Wreck in Mt. Pleasant, SC. Had a pretty big bill with getting all the specials and what not, but it was vacation so what the heck. Went to pay bill and the waitress said some anonymous person paid our bill + tip.

The Depot in Florence, OR was quite high on my list.

It was great because we just stumbled across it on our trip down the coast. The food was awesome, the service was great, the atmosphere was perfect, and the wine was delicious.

We ate there two nights in a row. From what I can recall, I had the bouillabaisse on one night, and a surf and turf of some kind the next. It was a while ago, and we had a fair amount of wine...

I've been lucky and have had a bunch of really great meals in restaurants. So it's hard to choose just one. A couple come to mind though.

At The Pinyon in Boulder. Duck fat fries as an appetizer with Tank 7 beer. Main course was shrimp and grits for me with another Tank 7. The wife had fried chicken. Dessert was bourbon glazed donuts and Odell bourbon stout. The Pinyon was opened by a chef who had worked in a bunch of high end restaurants. Most of the food was very simple with southern influences (obviously) but prepared exceptionally well, and with some little twists to make it unique and in my opinion better than usual.

The other was at Frasca in Boulder. It's an amazing restaurant with food from the Friuli region of Italy. I've been there three or four times, but the first was the most memorable. I had the four course tasting menu with paired wines for each course and my wife did the same but without the wine.

My antipasti was "Pesce Crudo - hiramasa, fresh Maine shrimp, cucumber, radish and orange" though my wife's was a little better "Uovo Croccante - crispy egg, potato, frisee and black truffle."

Second course was "Maccheroni alla Chitarra - manila clam, pork sausage and hot pepper" for me and "Tortelloni - ricotta, butternut squash, hazelnut and black trumpet" for the wife. Both of those were equally good.

My main course was "Capasante Arroste - stonington Maine scallop, cauliflower, sultana, pine nut and bottarga" and the wife had "Quagglia all Griglia - grilled Mississippi quail, sour cherry, bacon, farro and watercress."

And for dessert she had "Crostata di pompelmo rosso rubino - almond frangipane, vanilla bean pastry cream and house made frozen yogurt" and I had "Cioccolatini della Casa - a series of chocolates 70% bittersweet, vanilla rum, coconut, malt, passionfruit caramel, and candied orange.

When we went with some friends, one of them said, "What are they doing back there? Sprinkling powdered unicorn on everything?" It's really just stunning what they can do with food there. The wine service is excellent, every glass complimented its course of food perfectly. And of course everything else about the experience is about as perfect as you can get.

The French Rivera at night from a medieval town.

I then went back to my hotel in Monaco and spent the night drinking with filthy rich Russians.

this one time when i tried wagyu in Lima. it was my 25th birthday, and i went with my family.

the waiter was a pretty awesome older cuban guy, who REALLY knew his wines.
i ordered 3 bottles, per his suggestions, and they all were among the finest wines i´ve tried. first time i tried tempranillo (now my favorite grape).
the service was perfect, the wagyu was cooked to perfection in all its fatty glory... and the tempranillo, just awesome.

Do you actually have to eat there for it to count?

I had an awesome experience at a pub in Bromont (perhaps the Bromont pub??). Anyways, the owner of the place was outstanding. She started to drink with a friend and myself at the bar and gave us healthy sized samples of all the beers they had on tap. It was just simply amazing competent and friendly service.

I remember staying in Vancouver BC to do some shore riding.

Me and my wife got a motel in N. Van, and nearby was an "Earls" restaurant. There weren't any other restaurants nearby, and we were done driving anywhere. We both kinda shrugged at the idea of going to a place named like that, but we were really surprised. It was hard to focus on my food because all the servers and hostesses were super hot and they all wore black cocktail dresses. My wife caught my wandering eye a few times... Besides being easy on the eyes, the food was amazing.

Best experience for the surprise of it all...

Mine will take a bit to explain. Specifically, it's Pizza My Heart in Monterey, CA. Wife had raved about the original one (in Santa Cruz, I think), so when we finally ate at the Monterey one, we ordered a cheese pie, and they wrote my name on it with the sauce (tomato, not secret, haha). The following year, I went to Sea Otter on my own, and I wanted to bring back one of their pies. I called and asked if they would write "W.Y.M.M.?" for me with the sauce. When I stopped in to pick it up, we had to cut it in half to fit the cooler I had. Wife was shocked when I got it home, and very appreciative, too. Went to it, again, last year when we arrived for Sea Otter, and the manager that helped out before took care of us. And by that, I mean he comped our whole meal (about $40-ish). As we're sitting/eating, we noticed their Shark Bite hot sauce, and I asked him if they sold it. He replies "yes and no, we do sell it, but not to you, it's free", sets us up with 5 or 6 bottles, a couple of t's, and a few frisbees for our dogs. Find out this year he's moved on to open their new Capitola store in 41st, so it looks like we'll have to stalk him next time we drive down.

Yep, Pizza My Heart is my favorite restaurant........

There is a restaurant in Baltimore at the Inner Harbor where the theme is that the waitresses and staff insult you and treat you like dirt. Anyone know the name of this place?

Anything I ever ate at the Lakeview Lodge on Lake Lure inside Fairfield Mountains Golf Resort during it's heyday shortly after filming of Dirty Dancing. I went from busboy to waiter to bartender in my youth there. We had elite 4 and 5 star chefs from around the world at the time.

Everything from Chicago's finest chef to a world renowned French Quarter master fed me and our staff over those epic years of excess. Eating a Filet Mignon and Lobster Tail for zero dollars is truly epic. :D

Two stick out to me. One was the few times I went to a pretty nice Portuguese restaurant in New Haven, CT with my girlfriend at the time (now wife). We would never go there normally, but my sister bought us a sizable gift certificate there one Christmas and then again the next one. I particularly remember the risotto and also braised veal cheeks. Just a great overall experience.

Second one was last summer in Brantome, France. We had a lot of good food in France, but the place we went in that town was the nicest of the trip. Drank lots of wine and had great fairly traditional French food. Lots of rabbit, duck, foie gras, some pigeon, fish- that sort of thing. Sat right next to the river that goes through the town for the length of the meal, which was probably around 4 hours, maybe even more. Best part was I was with my immediate family (parents, brother, sister), my wife and another family that we have known our whole lives. Our parents were friends in college and they had kids around the same time as my parents had us, so we went on summer vacation together (mostly camping) for about 15 years and visited them on holidays. So, a fabulous meal with some lifelong friends. Second best part was our parents picking up the check.

Well, when you close the place down on a rainy Sunday night in late August, and no one is around except for the night security guy, who slept through his shift every night...and you are 19 and full of raging hormones and free Canadian beer, stuff happens ;)
