What do people think of the rim for downhill? Is it strong enough for a 9-10st rider? Please discuss and post any past experiences with the rim.

I've got one on the front of my trail-bike, with a 721 out back. It is a plenty strong for all the abuse I have thrown at it, and in hindsight, I wouldn't think twice about using one out back either. I have finally managed to throw mine slightly out of true after a nasty nose case in this past weekend, still barely a wobble.
I have been considering using this wheelset as a light/race set for the DH rig.
Another option is that if you run it and find it is not strong enough for you, you can lace up a ex721 w/ the same spokes( same rim except for the 721 uses maxtal alloy)

I was debating to ditch my 823's and build up a 521 front and a 721 in the rear. I know Mitch Delfs run's a set of 521's or deemax's. The rims seem to hold up fine I think if your smooth enough and not a hack.

I remember when this rim came out a few years back - looks like a very interesting offering but availability here in the states is limited from what I understand - shouldn't be a problem if you live in Ireland though. I'm pretty sure CRC carries them.

The EN521 is in a way Mavic's response to DT's 5.1d.

There are some threads about it on RM somewhere - I'll see what I can dig up out of curiosity since I haven't looked at this rim in a while.

Pretty sure it was Fabien Barel running them at the worlds this year.

well if monsieur barel uses them for DH, I reckon they would be more than up to taking any of the abuse that I could ever give them or you adam.

see below pictures of fabien's bike Maribor '09

I ran them last year. The wheel set looked great with red burgtec hubs and red nipples. The rear just made it the full season and the front looks good. Its lighter then a 721 rim but more fragile.

The sidewalls are smaller than the 721 and it also has a different cross-section shape than the 721.
Good to know these are relatively sturdy rims. I just finished building a set for my 6" trail bike.

bump, anyone else running the 521. They are crazy cheap right now.
I've been beating on them on my trail bike all spring. I've done some hucking, jumping and rock smashing and they are still relatively straight. I've run EX721's on my DH bike the last 3 seasons and have been thinking that I could easily get away with the EN521's as a race only wheel.

Please share the crazy cheapness... I am interested.

It looks close, but I thought the 521 had lower sidewalls. Can anyone confirm or deny this? I thought these looked sweet for the lower price.
Looking at them side by side they look like relatively the same profile. The biggest difference is that the 721 has the brake track so it looks like the sidewalls are low on the 521. Cross section wise its like a triangle on top of a rectangle, whereas the 521 is more like just a triangle. 'scuse the sh*te analogy but that's the best I can come up with. :thumb:

oh yeah- I'd like to find out about that crazy cheap deal too. I think I paid $100 for one laced to a slx 20mm hub with dt comp spokes from CRC. Can't get a whole lot cheaper than that...

I have been curious about these since they came out. Basically a bridge gap from the 321 to 721 rims. I have run the xm321 and previous 219 rims for trail and occasional jumping in the past, but found they were weaker than the 721 and the construction was not as nice. The en521 bumps back up the construction but I still have a hard time "saving" $20-30 when it comes time to build. The maxtal alloy resists denting and goes longer between truing IME. I went ex721 again when it came to decision time. On a CRC wheelset it is about $24/wheel upgrade.

I've eyed this up too. I've run Sun Ringle, DT Swiss and Mavic rims over the years. I prefer Mavic. I have DT 5.1s on my Meta6 right now and I trashed one recently. I put a new on one and have another spare yet (I got a deal on a stack of them over a year ago).

But I'm thinking of selling the Hope/DT set and getting Cross Max next year. This compared to Hope/521s anyone? Or I'd sell the Hope/DT because I get a deal on the Cross Max.

What's the weight on the 521?

I got a Mavic EN521-Hope Pro II wheelset from CRC and although I've only used it for 3 weekends or so, I can say it is a solid rim and very light.

My only "complaint" was the width, but I knew it before buying them and the EN521 replaced a EX729, so that's why I felt the rim narrower immediately.

Wanted to check in and see if anyone is rocking please in the current day. I know everyone is all over the flows, but CRC doesn't have the flows so its the 521s or going to a heavier rim like the DT Swiss FR 600

I am about 185 geared up, not smooth but also don't go through wheelsets. Anyone who can chime in, it would be appreciated

521's are a good rims made out of a 6106 alloy. 721s are made of "maxtel" (a mavic specific aluminum alloy which they say offers a higher weight to strength ratio than conventional 6106 alloy.) I have had a set of each and found them to be be good strong rims. The 521s may be more likely to dent.
